Lady Cougars/Cougars Host Halls in District Tussle

The Cougar basketball squads tipped off district 3-AAAA play Tuesday night at John R.W Brown Gymnasium as they hosted long time rival, the Halls Red Devils.

The Lady Cougars got things started with a deep corner three that Saylor Hutcheson managed to kiss in off the glass, to tie it at 3-3. Following a stop, the bank was still open for Bella Lester. She banked in a deep three from the right key area. The Lady Red Devils hit a three to tie it, with Lacey Pemberton pushing the Lady Cougars back in front 8-6.

The Lady Red Devils remained hot from three, sending one through the net to go up 9-8. They followed that up with a two, and then yet another three to take a 14-8 lead.

The Lady Cougars got back on track when Carly Kitts drove the baseline, forcing Halls to collapse into the paint on defense. She spotted her sister, Jayden slightly right of the top of the key, fired a pass through traffic to her and Jayden was nothing but net on the attempt. It was 14-11 Halls.

Lester drove the next Lady Cougar possession to the hoop, she scored through contact. The two counted but she missed the free toss, it was 14-13, Halls. The Lady Red Devils got the last points of the quarter, and took at 16-13 lead into the break.

After a 7-0 start on the season, the Lady Cougars haven't trailed much this season. They would respond. The quarter started how the game did, with Hutcheson dropping a three, tying the score at 16. A Jayden Kitts free throw put the Cougars up 17-16, but Halls went back up 18-17. Carly Kitts sent home a three to make it 20-18 CCHS. Then she did it again, it was 23-18. After a stop on the defensive end, Pemberton grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 25-18 Campbell County.

The defense continued to stifle Halls and the offense kept working. This time Pemberton swept across the lane, drew the defense and dropped a perfect assist to an open Reagan Davis. Davis's bucket made it 27-18 Lady Cougars. Halls finally added another basket but Carly Kitts was still red hot, she drilled another three to make it 30-20.

There it stood at the half. After trailing in the first quarter, the Lady Cougars responded by upping the defensive pressure and being patient on offense. They outcored Halls 17-4 in the second. "We're a veteran group now, with four junior starters," Saylor Hutcheson said after the game. "We don't panic when things aren't going right. We've gotten better at keeping calm, so we just keep playing and making plays."

The third quarter saw the Lady Cougars build on their lead. Pemberton and Jayden Kitts scored early, Pemberton's three point play saw the lead move to 14, 38-24. A Lester free throw, Hutcheson three, a spectacular shake and bake two from Jayden Kitts, and two Carly Kitts free throws closed the third quarter scoring. It was 46-31 Lady Cougars headed to the final stanza.

The Lady Red Devils opened the quarter on a 6-2 run, but Carly Kitts buried a three to push the Lady Cougar lead back to 14 at 51-37. Each time Halls threatened to get it under 10, the Lady Cougars had a response. Lester, Hutcheson, Preslee Chapman and Destiny Rutherford all added points the rest of the way, leading to the 58-41 final margin.

Carly Kitts led the way for CCHS with 16 points. Jayden Kitts put in 11, Saylor Hutcheson and Lacey Pemberton had 10 each, and Bella Lester added 8 in the district win.

Jayden Kitts, the only non-veteran, is the freshman point guard for the Lady Cougars. She had a great night finding shooters, "I was just trying to find the open looks. I got Saylor early in the corner. Then Carly got hot and I kept trying to find her." Kitts lost her entire 8th grade season to an ACL surgery. Her PG play as a freshman has helped propel the Lady Cougars to an 8-0 start in 2023-24.

The boys took the floor soon after and Gavin Cox scored the first four points of the game before Halls made it 4-3. Gavin Owens scored on a reverse lay-up to make it 6-3 Cougars. Cox added two more, making it 8-3 Campbell County, before the Red Devils scored five in a row to tie it at 8-8. Cox struck again, this time with a deep three, putting the Cougars back in front 11-8.

Halls ran off six in a row, with Tyler Kitts ending the Red Devil run. It was 14-13 Halls after the Kitts score. That's where the game stood after one.

Halls scored the first five points of the second quarter, going up 19-13. After a Cougar timeout, they managed buckets from Luke Browning and Owens to make it 21-17 Halls. Halls pushed the lead to 8, 25-17, when Logan Day put in two. The Cougars would get another Browning bucket, but the score stood at 30-21 Halls at the half.

The two teams would trade points through the third quarter. Every time the Cougars got points, so did Halls. A Gabe St John three, just before the buzzer, made it 46-39 but Halls got a late two to make it 48-39 after three quarters of play.

The final quarter was more of the same. The Cougars fought hard early and went on an 11-6 run to start the quarter. It was 54-50 after Cox hit two free throws. The Cougars rally was stopped by four quick Red Devil points. Browning hit a jumper that made it 58-52 with just over two minutes remaining. A Cox three made it 62-57 as the clock ticked under a minute, but time had slipped away for the Cougars. The Red Devils made free throws the rest of the way and went on to a 66-57 win.

Gavin Cox led the Cougars with 20 points. Luke Browning added 12, Gavin Owens 8, Logan Day 6, with 4 each from Gabe St John and Tyler Kitts.

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors and EVgo Make Convenient, Accessible Charging a Reality with Opening of First Stations in Coast-to-Coast EV Charging Network

Pilot Travel Centers LLC, General Motors (NYSE:GM) and EVgo Inc. (NASDAQ: EVGO) today announced the opening of the first 17 locations of their previously announced national electric vehicle fast charging network. Now available in 13 states, the network features an elevated charging experience, providing EV travelers access to
the same amenities offered at existing Pilot and Flying J travel center locations.

“EV drivers are eager for a better charging experience and to have more charging locations along America’s most traveled corridors. These new charging locations and the many more to come, will be critical for improving range confidence,” said Adam Wright, Pilot Travel Centers LLC chief executive officer. “As interest in EVs continues to grow, we believe our network can be a catalyst to getting more EV drivers on the road.”
Pilot Travel Centers LLC, GM, and EVgo, along with multiple public agencies and utilities, have worked together to grow the nation’s public fast charging infrastructure, creating a model for how public-private collaboration can make measurable progress in accelerating broader access to EV charging. The three industry leaders have worked to provide current and future EV drivers with a thoughtful, practical and accessible charging experience for long distance travel.

Many locations throughout the network offer a variety of 24/7 amenities, products and
services, including:

Multiple fast charging stalls at each site, with chargers capable of delivering up to
350kW.
Canopies to help protect drivers from the elements during charging.
Pull-through charging stalls to accommodate EV towing.
Centrally located chargers in well-lit areas, monitored around-the-clock by onsite staff.
Access to restrooms, food and beverage options, and free Wi-Fi.
Plug and Charge compatibility for a streamlined charging experience.

A seamless digital user experience has also been built into this network — EV travelers will be able to easily find available charging locations via GM’s vehicle brand apps, Pilot’s myRewards Plus app, the EVgo app, PlugShare and other applications designed for EV drivers.* Beginning in spring 2024, GM and Pilot Travel Centers LLC will introduce exclusive benefits for GM drivers, including the ability to reserve a charger, and discounts on charging. All EV travelers can also save at Pilot and Flying J locations with regular deals on food, beverages and merchandise available in the myRewards Plus app.*

“As GM continues to advance its vision of an all-electric future, we’re collaborating broadly to accelerate access to convenient charging at home and on the go, offering additional confidence to prospective single vehicle customers considering an EV,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “This new network will provide EV drivers with a quality charging experience and greater peace of mind during road trips.”

By the end of 2023, it is expected that at least 25 Pilot and Flying J travel centers will feature EV fast charging, with approximately 200 locations targeted by the end of 2024. In total, the network will include up to 2,000 high-power fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S., connecting urban and rural communities. Expansion sites for this network have been strategically selected for continued electrification of highly traveled corridors in every corner of the nation.

“EVgo is committed to delivering a convenient, reliable, and customer-centric charging
experience,” said Dennis Kish, EVgo chief operating officer. “With robust amenities, optimal corridor locations, high-power charging and more, our collaboration with GM and Pilot Company puts drivers first and boosts range confidence for every EV traveler on the road.”

Tennessee Honoring 75 Years Of Human Rights

December 10th marks International Human Rights Day. The day the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations on Dec. 10, 1948.

The UDHR, its preamble and 30 articles, represent the universal recognition that basic rights and fundamental freedoms are inherent to all human beings, inalienable and equally applicable to everyone, and that every person is born free and equal in dignity and rights.

The UDHR strengthened the human rights movement and was the first time in history the United Nations outlined universal civil, political, social, economic, and cultural rights for all human beings. It has been translated into over 500 languages and has inspired more than seventy human rights treaties in existence today.

Each year human rights advocates around the world celebrate International Human Rights Day. This year marks the 75th anniversary that the Declaration was established, and the theme will be “Dignity, Justice and Freedom for All”. Tennesseans will celebrate International Human Rights Day on Wednesday, December 6 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at the Nashville Church of Scientology Community Hall.

At the Tennessee Celebration for International Human Rights, Day, individuals will be honored for their commitment to advancing human rights. Honorees include:

The 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award: Former Metro Council Member, Ludye Wallace, for serving his Davidson County community for nearly 30 years.
The2023 Outstanding Service Award: Tamika Braden, Founder and Executive Director of the HELP Center; Jenn Garcia, Vice President of Action, Advocacy and Education with the Oasis Center; Martesha Johnson Moore, Chief Public Defender at the Metro Public Defender’s Office; and Kelly Sue Waller, Director of Southern Crossroads.
The 2023 Rising Advocate Award: Kosar Kosar, Organizer with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition; Zacnite Vargas, President of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.
The event will also feature panel discussion on this year’s theme, “Dignity, Justice and Freedom for All”. Moderated by The Tennessean’s Opinion and Engagement Director, David Plazas, the panel will discuss present day issues in human rights and feature panelists Samar Ali, Research Professor of Political Science and Law at Vanderbilt University, and Rabbi Michael Danziger, Senior Rabbi at The Temple.

In honor of Human Rights Day, Eleanor Roosevelt stated, “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seek equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

Whether advocating for the rights of new Americans, supporting formerly incarcerated peoples, or leading their communities as civil servants, the 2023 honorees and panelists
are living examples of concerted citizen action. This year we celebrate those who are advancing human rights in Tennessee and renew our commitments to creating communities there is dignity, justice, and freedom for all.

Pearl’s Opinion
God is Faithful Always
By: Pearl Harper

As the Christmas season is here it makes me think of how different my childhood was, compared to now. Me, my sister's Sue and Linda and brothers Earl and Robert grew up in coal camps. I don't ever remember being hungry nor do I remember having excess.

First, I will tell you about my mom, Pauline Hansley Bryant, originally from Wallins Creek, Kentucky in Harlan County. Mom, as I was growing up and look back seemed to always care for her needs more than anyone else. She was very contentious and very hard to predict her behavior. I know many of you could tell sad stories of your lifetime. Mom left dad and us (there were 3 of us at that time.) I was too young to remember everything, I was 5 or 6, the oldest. She came back but there was some good times and some turbulent times. She never seemed happy, thus no one else was.

I will rush to the good news. About 6 or 7 years before mom passed she accepted Christ. She went to the church with me, The LaFollette Church of God. (If you accept Christ, he will direct you to a church so you can be with people of the like precious faith.) The reason I can share my story is to tell you, after mom accepted Christ, she was indeed a new creature. Many people of the congregation would come up to me and say, “You have the sweetest mom.” Only God can do such miracles!

My dad, Walter “Dink” Bryant was one of 7 siblings. His mom was killed in a car accident when he was nine years old, and he was born in Bell County Kentucky. They later had a mean stepmom. They all left home as soon as they could. Dad started working in the mines when he was 16. They said the first thing he bought was a bicycle.

As I look back and the way they were brought up (dad's siblings) they could have been hard hearted, but they were not, they all loved their families dearly. My dad liked his alcohol most home brew etc. It seemed to be rampant in the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. But dad never neglected caring for his family, he always showed love.

Many times, as I look back it seems that dad helped live the childhood that he never had through us. For instance, many times when we would have a big snow dad would build a big fire so we could sleigh ride. You should have seen some of our “sleighs,” and as for having the proper clothing …not.

He played ball with us. Some fond memories were on certain nights when we first got television; mom would pop a dish pan full of popcorn, grape Kool-Aid of course, and we would laugh at Milton Berle. It would seem silly to today's children.

Dad had the opportunity when we were small to go to the Brooklyn Dodgers Camp. There is no doubt my dad could have been a pitcher for the Dodgers, but there was no way he could support a family while at the camp.

There were two things I realized later that dad did that was unlike anyone I had ever seen. Although he loved his alcohol, he never neglected his family, and he would quit for months at a time. And he did the same with smoking. He would smoke for periods of time then quit for periods of time. The wonderful news, my dad accepted Christ at age 84. Why shouldn't I tell my story? God is faithful.

God Bless.
Pearl 💍

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Myrna Muse Kelly on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the age of 79. Heaven's choir gained an angel, and the earth lost a radiant spirit. Born on September 27, 1944, in Harlan County, Kentucky, Myrna wove a life rich in love, music, and an unwavering commitment to family.

A cheerleader and majorette during her high school years, Myrna's love for rhythm never waned. Her home resonated with melodies, and she found joy in gospel music, singing, and playing the piano.

Her love for Kentucky, her birthplace, ran deep. Myrna was a proud coal miner's daughter and honorary Kentucky Colonel. She loved her heritage and was a passionate fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball.

Myrna loved animals big and small. Any furry varmint could find a soft spot in her heart (including her husband Jim when he grew a mustache in 1978). Growing up, she made pets out of her father's hunting dogs, mules and even a groundhog. This love for animals and a compassionate heart remained a constant throughout her life.

The heart of Myrna's world was her family. She was their architect of fun and adventure, creating cherished memories through road trips, family reunions, and camping adventures! A devoted daughter, Myrna lovingly cared for her parents in their later years. Her marriage to Jim was a shared journey of dreams. Their upcoming 50th wedding anniversary in January was a milestone she had eagerly awaited, standing as a testament to their love.

Myrna is preceded in death by her father, Howard Muse, mother, Irene Muse, sister, Barbara Mink, and son, Jeffrey Kelly. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim Kelly of Lafollette, TN; her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Elley Kelly of Dallas, TX; her chosen daughter, Beverly Jones of Sherman, TX; niece, Ginger Sabolcik of Chicago, IL; and nephew, Jerry Collier of Lynchburg, VA.

We celebrate Myrna's life and the unconditional love she shared. Her legacy of love, music, and compassion will forever echo in the hearts of those she touched.

A celebration of Myrna's life will take place on Friday, December 15th, from 5-7pm at Walters Funeral Home in LaFollette, TN, with a graveside service on Saturday, December 16th at noon at Rock Springs Cemetery in Gatliff, KY. Friends and family are invited to share memories and the joy Myrna brought into our lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Rock Springs Cemetery Fund c/o Ms. Pauline Johnson, 837 Louden Rd., Williamsburg, KY 40769 in Myrna's memory.

Walters Funeral Home of LaFollette, TN is honored to be serving the family of Myrna Muse Kelly.
