Our Journey
Our journey began with students in our own community.
In 2012, a local principal approached us asking for help. She said that the moral foundation of her school was eroding, and that she wanted to find a way to help her students learn social and emotional values. In response, our team launched an experimental school program, now called “Belay”, designed to care for under-resourced schools within our district.
Within three years, our program had grown from 1 to 19 schools in the school district, and connected 3600 unique students per year with adults focused on helping them succeed. We realized that we had stumbled unto something really huge; by combining social and emotional learning objectives with moral values from Jesus, we could help struggling schools and care about individual students at the same time.
Two years after our experiment in school outreach began, we started thinking about how to care for students struggling with pain, stress, and addiction. In the fall of 2014, we launched our first session of “Regroup” - a cross between traditional group counseling techniques and the message of Jesus. 6 students came to our first meeting, but within two sessions, that number had grown to 36 each week. Students applied forgiveness, listening skills, and spiritual direction to the problems in their lives, and we watched as relationships around them transformed.
