ICYMI:
Busybody lobbyists pestered the FDA into declaring sesame an allergen, thus forcing all food producers to note it on their product labels. This was done, in theory, to help the roughly 765,000 Americans allergic to sesame to find products without it.
Problem is that government regulators generally don’t know a single thing about the industries they regulate. In commercial bakeries that handle sesame, trace amounts of the stuff get literally everywhere. To make a product truly sesame free would require separate and isolated production facilities, which is massive capital outlay just to service 0.23% of the population.
So, sensibly, commercial bakers simply added the already ubiquitous sesame to the recipes for all products, and then changed the labels to match. Now the bakers are in compliance, and people with sesame allergies have even fewer options than before.
Isn’t being governed awesome?!
