Living Shelter Podcast Providing innovative design solutions for sustainable homes + communities through architecture + education
(10)

Living Shelter Architects has joined Seattle architecture and design firm, Board & Vellum, forming the base of a new studio focused on sustainable practices, with Terry Phelan at the helm as Director of Sustainable Practice. Terry is also the host of the Living Shelter podcast, where she continues her work as a sustainability advocate. Presenting today’s innovative people, processes, and materials

that help us create healthy, energy efficient, and joyful places to live, the Living Shelter podcast dives deep with other green building groundbreakers in conversations to inspire the next generation of passionate architects and designers leading us into the future. Before joining Board & Vellum, Terry founded Living Shelter Architects in 1992, building a woman-owned architecture firm specializing in resilient residential and small community design, with a focus on passive solar concepts and traditional forms. Since then, Terry has become known for her pioneering work with alternative building materials such as straw bales with natural plasters. Season 1 of the Living Shelter podcast is launching in April 2023, with more seasons to come. We hope you'll join us on your podcast app of choice, for chats with guests about their efforts to help us create a deeper green, resilient future.

Terry Phelan led her first strawbale workshop in 1998 (click to see it!) and still gets regular requests from people who want to learn. But with many experienced strawbale builders retiring, how can we keep the momentum going? offers training sessions, and Henderson Clayworks is another great resource. So what's next? Today, those of us in the United States of America celebrate our independence. At Living Shelter, we believe that healthy, local materials that create energy efficient buildings can play a large role in maintaining that.

Sustainable energy is also key to long term energy independence. While oil prices soar and exploration becomes more damaging to our ecosystem, new developments in wind and solar are making sustainable energy more accessible and affordable.

Both of these strategies help by controlling costs and reducing carbon emissions that can destabilize weather patterns. They also create a better vision for an independent future. Consider mentioning them in your conversations with family and friends as you celebrate today.

"Drywall is terrible stuff," but a new, high-performance replacement is on the horizon.

Breathaboard is made in the UK from agricultural feedstock mixed with lime and pressed between paper. The product is being also being developed--in North America using h**p or canola stalks.

This lightweight sustainable material actually stores carbon, and it avoids most of the issues we experience with traditional gyp board because it "breathes". It's also fire retardant, offers reduced noise transfer, and better insulation properties.

Click link below and check out to learn more about how Breathaboard is made, and the positive impact this new product could make on the environment!
