Turkey responds The coup attempt in Turkey on July 15 – carried out by some units in the country’s military – aimed at overthrowing the democratically elected government.

It caused the death of least 246 Turkish civilians and left more than 2,100 injured. The coup was organized by followers of U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen, who is accused of pursuing a long-running campaign to overthrow the government through supporters within the Turkish state, particularly inside the military, police and judiciary.
