I'm feeling both lazy AND crazy this week, so I'm bringing you a reprise of a show from back in 2021 – an entire playthrough of one of the greatest compilation albums ever from Jack Hertz' brilliant Aural Films netlabel, Attention K-Mart Shoppers!

If you've never heard this album before, tune in and prepare to get your brain bent. The challenge for this compilation was to create tracks making use of a wide variety of audio materials created by the store chain K-Mart and its immediate predecessor S. S. Kresge, made available on the Internet Archive. Most of these are lounge versions of famous songs interspersed with commercials to be played over the store PA system – they were streamed in the store's final years, but before that they were played on cassettes, and before that on reel-to-reel tapes, and before that on custom-pressed LPs. However, there are also some employee training filmstrips (remember those?) from the 1940s, a couple of corporate theme songs (!), and more....

You'll hear tracks from Jack Hertz, Frans Kedes, Michael Idehall, EOF, (Helper Unit), Mystified, Emergency Hand Puppet, Benjamin R Fuhrman, Jaime Munárriz, Tim Kays, Dave Fuglewicz, The Implicit Order, M.NOMIZED, George Feledichuk, Solemn Shapes – and maybe, just maybe, a Live Ambient Blue Light Special by yours truly, who missed out on the chance to be a part of this amazing album.

The doors open at 6 PM PDT / SLT. Show up in Discord, join us in the Waffle Shack restaurant in the parking lot in Second Life, or just tune in and enjoy the maddening airwaves from a time when men and ladies alike wore suits to shop, retail service people were expected to be elegant, efficient, and subservient, and the greatest enemy you could think of was (gasp!) SHRINKAGE...

Tonight, Mr. Spiral returns after two weeks of positively hellish work deadlines for the sixth and last in the Don’t Be A Stranger series of shows featuring lesser-known artists in the RadioSpiral library. Tonight’s show pretty much reflects his state of mind, and it won’t be for everyone – tonight we go into the Dead Lands and hear from artists who specialize in soundscapes, textures, and noise.

For two solid hours, you’ll hear fascinating, bleak, arresting, uncompromising, and sometimes outright scary stuff from Jeff Kunzelman (Spacetrucker 2196), Al Baldwin (Pallid Mask), Mystahr, Darkstar83, No-oN, makonouchi bento, Bunker Palace, Svart1, Paul Landry, DeuxExSounds, and many more.

There might be a suitably gnarly Live Ambient Rant, but honestly the Host is pretty well trashed, so don’t count on it tonight, and if it does happen it will be after the regular show – be prepared to stay up late.
The journey begins at 6 PM PDT / SLT. Join us in Discord, in Second Life (which will be interesting, as there is no part of Gypsy’s beautiful region that’s particularly bleak), or just listen in. Bring your hiking shoes and plenty of water, it’s going to be a dusty trek.

Radio for the Internet Age

Started in early 2017 as a spinoff of another internet station, RadioSpiral is the home of some of the most compelling electronic and ambient music on the web. And as one of the very few stations with a persistent presence (streaming 24/7) in Second Life, we also have a vibrant and very engaged community of listeners, artists, hosts, and admins.

We pride ourselves on presenting a top-quality experience for our listeners, carefully curating an immense (and always-growing) body of work from artists all over the world. Peppered with hosted shows and regular live music festivals, RadioSpiral is the place to be.

Okay, enough of the sales speak. How did we start?

First it was Mike Metlay, aka “Mister Spiral, the Spiral who puts the spiral in spiral”, and Diana Smethurst, aka “GypsyWitch”, joined shortly afterward by another internet radio veteran, Paul Harriman, aka “EdisonRex”, who hosts, plays live, and runs the nerve center of the station (i.e. the servers that broadcast all this wonderful stuff). Within the first year, we added Joe McMahon, aka “Pemungkah”, aka “The SpudMeister”, to the admin staff; Rebekkah Hilgraves, aka “Skr0!nk” followed not long after; and round out the list of luminaries, Allen Goodman and Darrell Burgan joined us.
