We lost our best friend on August 9th. I haven’t wanted to think about it, let alone talk about it, but it would be a disservice to Goo and everyone that knew her if I didn’t, so here goes…
Goo, Gooey, Goobert, Gupertino, Goobenstein, Susan, Dogface, Gooby Doo, Grouper, etc. was a weird dog; she was distrustful, fearful, fu***ng hated other dogs, but was overflowing with love once you gained her trust. She was 4 when we adopted her and I’ve been dreading this moment since the first time she sat on my lap next to the fake fire hydrant at the Humane Society.
Goo was born in Fresno and somehow landed herself in a kill shelter. Through the Second Chance program she ended up in Portland and was briefly the belle of the ball at the Humane Society - all the staff absolutely adored her. She definitely had her demons but Rain and I have spent the last 8 years trying to give her the best life possible and to ease her worried mind. And it worked! The last couple years she calmed down quite a bit, wasn’t so fearful of the world, and recently started being able to peacefully lay on her bed and stare out the front door, watching the world go by.
She had one of the stone coldest resting bitch faces you’ve ever seen, but also had the sweetest smile and loved licking - your leg, herself, the floor, whatever. She was a homebody, a CUDDLER, a bed hog, an unabashed food slut, a de-fluffer and power-chewer, she was 40 lbs of pure muscle but was also a runt with a Napoleon complex. She always thought she was twice as big as she was. She would go toe to toe with a bear if given the chance. But she could normally be found either in bed or on the couch. Her favorite place in the world though was on the couch in my studio. She would slink down here at every opportunity and bliss out to the lack of outside ambient noise. She took comfort in the silence. But we always joked that she was actually down here working on her mix tape.
Life is weird without Goo. We’re learning how to live without her, slowly. We love you Goo. Send us that mix tape when it’s finished…
