Fresh from winning accolades and bagging the Best International Fashion Designer Award at the recently concluded Vietnam International Junior Fashion Week 2024, Filipino Fashion Designer Don Cristobal is taking centerstage once more at the Philippine Pride Fashion Week 2024. This event which is a brainchild of Cristobal himself has become a platform of inspiration and a beacon of motivation, encouragement, and empowerment.

PhPFW is one of Cristobal's most prominent annual spectacles which helped propel careers of many in the world of fashion, beauty, and entertainment. Philippine Fashion Gala 2024: Living Up To Its Title As A New "Paragon" Of Runway Shows

How do you relaunch a fashion show and make an unforgettable statement? Put it and stamp it within the annals of Fashion History. And there is no better way to do it but to to hold it in a most dignified edifice with a grand legacy spanning several centuries old. And this is exactly what MTP Production, headed by its founder Mike Tagle did for the relaunch of Philippine Fashion Gala dubbed as "Paragon" last May 25, 2024 at the Museo de San Agustin of San Agustin Church. The museum which was once a monastery of the Augustinian order is part of the San Agustin Church complex, a massive baroque architectural wonder named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the old Spanish colonial walled city of Intramuros in the Capital City of Manila.

San Agustin is considered the oldest stone church in the Philippines which withstood the test of time for more than 400 years. And as for PhFG, touted as one of the highly regarded fashion events in the country established several years ago, also went through challenging situations including a pandemic which crippled the global fashion industry. Despite the changing of the tides, it was poised to make a comeback and assume its seat in the Philippine fashion show empire. On the evening of May 25th, like a Queen, the Philippine Fashion Gala has consummated its coronation within the hallowed halls of San Agustin amidst the cheers of its loyal subjects.

As one of the many guests who came in modern Filipiniana to witness this grand spectacle, I was quite impressed how the amazing contrast of the old and the new blended flawlessly. The dignified vaulted halls of antiquity and the vibrance of modern innovative fashion was unlike what I have seen before in local runway shows. This reminded me of European fashion extravaganzas held in cathedrals and fabled castles. The shows of Gucci at the Westminster Abbey cloisters and Alexander Wang at St.Bartholomew's New York came to mind. And now this, here in our local shore at the majestic San Agustin. Choosing it as a venue was a laudable decision. Furthermore, employing the skills of the highly talented Raymund Ramirez Seranillo as the show's Fashion Director was terrific. Of course, the roster of Fashion Designers is a great factor, and the ones chosen for the gala were undoubtedly perfect. The result was never short of spectacular.

More than 200 feet of a long L-shaped runway which was half of the cloisters enclosing the courtyard of the museum where Agustinian friars must have walked when it was still a monastery, became the playground of fashion models who strutted their stuff. Amidst blaring sounds echoing through the sombre adobe halls, and a subtle amount of lights, enough to create magic without detrimenting the gigantic age old paintings hung on the walls, the models sashayed in creations showcasing the ingenious minds of our Filipino fashion designers who came from different corners of the Philippine islands. Fusing Filipino elements, locally sourced materials, colourful traditions, highly conceptualized stories and futuristic visions, the eleven (11) Fashion Designers displayed uniqueness and diversity worthy of praise. At curtain call, a thundering applause welcomed Cedric Ramos, Jet Torrento, Laydeh Alberto, Ercia Aguila, Frhyne Danan, Frankie Say, Ayra Longsiab, Gladys Ayuste, Cyrix Muyco, Xioti Chiu, and Carl Arcusa who all served their collections in a silver platter. It was marvel after marvel and our fashion palates were satiated. We were profoundly pleased by such an amazingly exhilarating evening. I can't help but shout "Bravo!"

After the show, me and my group of stylish friends still lingered at the venue's coffee shop. When the clock's hands went past midnight, we found out that there was a downpour. And in a usual Pinoy way, I superstitiously thought "Perhaps, the rain is a blessing", pertaining to that evening's fascinating show. But of course, it was without a doubt a Blessing after Philippine Fashion Gala successfully staged an outstanding comeback. Indeed, a new page was added to Philippine Fashion History!
