Was hoping to be at the tonight AND all day tomorrow, but ended up spending the past three days trying to figure out how to get this machine back onto a trailer, and out of a landowner’s field; a burned out solenoid, with no hope for quick replacement, turned my no-till drill into a 1,200 pound paper weight! 😒🤦‍♂️ But…this is where great customer service goes a MILLION miles beyond “convenient” and “handy”; BOTH AND went way above and beyond with troubleshooting, testing, and engineering support to FINALLY get a solution that got this baby back home! 🙏🙏🙏 Paul, Larry, and the engineers who helped beyond my wildest hopes, thank you - it would NOT have been possible without you!!! 👊 Now… to get ready for my seminar tomorrow. 🤦‍♂️ See everyone at the show tomorrow afternoon! 👊

Folks were asking how I pulled a sample for CWD testing from this dead-head. First, not all dead-heads are created equal! Whether this deer was more “freshly” killed/eaten, of if it had only recently thawed/melted out of the significant cold/snow we had this winter, the brain stem - or Obex - was surprisingly intact when I stomped the vertebral column off of the skull (the soft pink “red rocket” poking out the end of the vertebrae in the pics). Unless very fresh (or frozen), often times the Obex in dead-heads is a worthless mush similar in consistency to warm yogurt. This one still had the consistency similar to that of a lightly steamed stem of a mushroom, so it still held together nicely for collection (see pic of it in the specimen jar of formaldehyde), and so “should” provide for a viable testing sample. I’ve been able to get adequate tests done from samples similar but slightly less “intact” as this, so I’m hopeful. Beyond that, contact your State Fish and Game agency or Vet Lab. Kansas has a great State Veterinary Lab that can send you these sample kits (for a small fee) to test either properly collected Obex, or the lymph nodes behind the larynx or “voice box” from a deer. I did a series of Reels a couple of years back regarding this, so I’ll see if I can repost them again.

I know some folks like finding these, but for me… it’s not how I like to find my boys. 🤨 Given the good condition of his teeth, he didn’t succumb to “old age.” Hard winter? Perhaps; we did have more snow and cold than normal. CWD? That’s my bet - unfortunately. Test to follow.

When your buddy sends you the first pic in an effort to make you jealous, but you can respond immediately with the second pic! 🤣🤷🏼‍♂️😎 crushed it AGAIN last night in Denver! Thanks to for hooking me up with tickets, great company and laughs, and a much-needed good start to 2024! …and it’s always nice seeing someone else rocking an epic RHR hat at a Tool concert. 😎👊 Until the next one, gentlemen! 👊🍻

Customer service! In a SEA of product manufacturers out there, many of whom provide a quality product, for me, how a company handles warranty issues often dictates whether or not they’ll ever see another dollar of mine. Every manufacturer is going to have some sort of problem, at some point, come off the line. Not everyone handles that well. I recently had a minor issue with a brand new set of pants, and before I wore them too much, I figured I’d reach out to their customer service/warranty claims folks to let them know of the issue and just SEE if it might be a warranty issue. I also shared a few pics of an OLD pair I had that had some weird material wear going on with a pocket (NOT for a warranty claim, just as an FYI...) Their response? Immediate, apologetic (which was TOTALLY not necessary), and instant replacement of BOTH pairs! Above and beyond anything I had asked/hoped for. I know… for them, it’s probably an inexpensive “fix” for a customer. But having seen how OTHER folks handle warranty issues in the recent past, it’s damn nice to see an American company stand behind their brand and do MORE than necessary rather than nickel and dime to scrape through with the bare minimum. 👊 By far the best pants I’ve ever owned, and beyond happy that they’re associated with a great company that supports their customers. 🙏

Join your’s truly this Friday and Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Denver ISE show for - dare I say - a LIVELY discussion regarding the Colorado wolf reintroduction, the uncomfortable realities that sportsmen face, and the likely future of elk hunting in the once-great Centennial State. I’m going to TRY to leave room for questions at the end, but with only an hour to tackle a complex issue, I’m going to try to move as quickly, but comprehensively, as I can while still making it fun and within grasp of all those that attend. The question is… will this one pull out ANOTHER protest crowd like we’ve done before? You’ll have to attend to find out! 😎😜🤣🤷🏼‍♂️

Happy place. Do YOU have one? …a place, a thing, an activity, that you can lose your mind into, and “reset?” As a lifelong bowhunter, I completely understand those that lose themselves into the daily ex*****on of sending arrows down-range, and watching the “mythical arc of the arrow“ sailing towards the target. But as much as I love bowhunting, and choose that option more often than not, I find that…THIS is my happy place; the place where I lose myself and fall into the relaxation of the process and the detail of executing a perfect shot on target - whatever that may be. Perhaps it’s my ability for the accuracy of it, perhaps it’s because it’s different than what I normally choose whilst out hunting, but for whatever reason… I could lose myself in this activity for hours on end, day after day. For a variety of reasons, I’ve been neglected this activity over these past 10 years, even though I’ve had ample opportunity to engage in it. Whether it’s 2024 and the “new year, new me” facade, or it’s just my commitment to get back to who I used to be, and what I love, I think I’m gonna be spending more time behind the trigger for whatever reason. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Whatever it may be, I hope you each embrace your “happy place“ this new year, and make it more of a prominent aspect in your life, rather than an anomaly. 👊 ***r

The fraud of what progressives TELL you they’ll do vs what they DO do will always see the light of day! I’m just surprised and happy to see it being unveiled so quickly! Read the article and tell me how much faith you have in this Wildlife Commission or Governor’s office to keep their “promises” going forward? Do you think “the will of the people” would’ve gone along with this selection of animals, or would they have chosen to wait just a bit for a few DIFFERENT wolves? 🤷🏼‍♂️ Doesn’t matter now, does it? 🤔🤨 Welcome to the philosophy of “the ends justify the means.” 😒 Link in bio.

This dog. 🙏 Another pheasant season is upon us, and like many of us… his heart and mind are MORE than willing, but his old muscles need a few more breaks during the day than what they used to. Even better if those breaks come with a refreshing “cold plunge” or lounge in the snow. 😎 I know our total number of pheasant hunts is growing limited, but in the meantime, we will enjoy every single one of them. 👊

Yet ANOTHER great discussion by on his regarding what’s going on in and the conflict/war with - or at least - factions WITHIN Palestine. This, for the United States, and our citizenry, is not just an issue that is happening thousands of miles away overseas. Tensions within our own States and communities are on the rise as well. If we are going to navigate the coming “disputes“ in our own country, we better have as many facts straight as we can! Thanks, Jack, for being a reasoned voice in this broader discussion! 👊 The screenshot is from U-Toob channel. Go check it out on U-Toob or wherever you consume your podcasts. 👊

I was elk hunting, and had come out of the hills to the nearest pay phone to call my wife and check in. It wasn’t until she told me what happened that it finally clicked as to why I wasn’t hearing or seeing any aircraft flying overhead as they normally do (depending on where you are in the CO mountains, Denver International Airport flight patterns can send a steady stream of aircraft over you all day and night). It’s interesting, and deeply saddening to me, to see where we are today as a Country and a society, a little more than two decades later. While it’s obvious that not all the changes we see today are from the events of that day, I have to agree with the sentiment of here… those who wish to seize power “never let a crisis go to waste.” 🤨😒😔

Mad scramble these past few days to get the “first round” of my fall plots in the ground, to be absolutely BLESSED with this today! 🙏🙏🙏 While we were supposed to get more in overall quantity according to the forecast, I cannot be more thankful for the way this is coming in; it’s been a slow drizzle since last night, on and off, so every drop of this is soaking in! 🙏🙌🙏🙌🙏 Grow, baby, GROW!

While some of us are out there having the time of their life on opening day of Colorado archery elk season, on OTC ground… “yours truly” is out here sweating away, putting in the work to prep for fall cool-season food plots. 🥺🤦‍♂️😔 Congrats to on a GREAT public land bull that MUST have oh-so-skillfully called in for the shot! 😎👊 The bar has been set early… now let’s see what the team, and yours truly can answer with. Jep had the solution to “hanging out with Papa today” while I worked outside on some landowner hunting/habitat projects; it was NOT supposed to be this warm today! 😡 …the very reason I waited until today to DO the outside work in the first place. 🤨 With more heat and brutal dry weather to come this upcoming week, many crops are already in trouble with little hope of recovery. 😒😔 While we’re technically under a La Niña pattern now, we’re not catching the flow of moisture yet. 🤨 🙏🙏🙏 we will soon. 🤷🏼‍♂️

EVERY Colorado sportsman needs to read this article, and then reach out to the Senator!!!! Well-written article, however, I think they sold Dan Gates short in his work with Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management. Link in bio! ALSO… huge thanks to for spreading the word! …while I don’t always agree with every position they take, I think they are at the top of the list on which “organizations” to support with your “advocacy dollars” because of the physical work they do, and the “boots on the ground” they have in politics on our behalf!

27/07/2023

Two days ago, yesterday, tomorrow, and the next 7 to 10 days. 🤨🥺😔 The lack of “deep moisture” is RAPIDLY showing itself on our crops, [food plots?] and native vegetation; as previously stated, everyone getting excited about our rainstorms coming through during early summer need to understand that each one of those rain events was simply enough moisture to recharge the 1st inch or so of soil thereby keeping plants alive for one more week. But that was when we had cool temperatures, cloudy skies, and not this brutal heat! In just three days, the physical manifestations of its impact on some of our crops is incredible! I’ll share those here in the next couple of days. For people who want to dismiss “climate change“ you need to understand that when we talk about “climate change“ the climate indeed HAS changed… The debate, and the controversy, is what to do about it, if anything. But make no mistake… The climate HAS changed. Yes, we are in different solar/Pacific Oscillatal cycles, but these cycles are different than what we’ve experienced in the past. It’ll be interesting to see how things adapt and shake out in the long term - especially for wildlife, and ESPECIALLY for game species. 🤔 For now, the question is, will the [first part?] of August effectively “undo” the “gains” of May through July??? 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️🤨🙏😔
