State and Local crews continue to make significant progress.

For those commuting to other towns: Route 6 at the Southbury/Woodbury line has been re-opened and is one lane, alternating traffic. Expect prolonged closures of sections of Route 34, Route 6, and Route 67 in Southbury, Oxford, Monroe and into the Valley.

We are all working together and continue to make significant progress. We appreciate your continued patience as we work to triage and repair damaged areas.

*We understand that viewing flood damaged areas is intriguing, but we ask residents to 1) Avoid hazardous areas. 2) Do not proceed past areas clearly blocked by traffic cones/barricades/caution tape etc. 3) Respect the private property of others.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT FROM FLOODING EVENT.

The CT Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DESPP/DEMHS) is undertaking the initial damage assessment survey from the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding that occurred between the dates of August 18th and August 19th. It is crucial that we promptly assess the extent of the damages and gather the necessary information to determine if thresholds and criteria are met to be considered under the FEMA Individual Assistance program and/or Small Business Administration (SBA) programs.

To streamline the data collection process and ensure accurate and efficient reporting, the State of CT has created a dedicated public self-reporting link for the public to report damages to homes and businesses. This portal will enable us to gather comprehensive information regarding the damages incurred and identify areas where to direct damage assessment teams. This information will still need to be verified through a potential joint preliminary damage assessment in the weeks to come.

Here is the residential and business self-reporting link:

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. Severe parameters look very marginal to me so not overly concerned with big impacts. Thankfully these will also be fast movers so the repeat Flash Flood threat is low in my opinion. Storms could occur anytime between now and 7PM, but I would watch for the main line around 5PM.

Route 34 in the area of the Stevenson Dam will be closed until further notice. Several portions of Route 34 in Newtown are unstable and partially washed out. We encourage residents who commonly use Route 34 to seek alternate routes.

State and local officials are working as quickly as possible to assess the impact of the flooding. You can do your part by remaining at home and off of the roads if at all possible. Please be patient with Emergency and Public Works crews. Thankfully, injuries have been minimal inNewtown so far.

Flooding update: After several hours of heavy rain and multiple emergency calls, we have only a few road closures still in effect: Rte 53 @ Railroad bridge, Shelter Rock at Danbury Line (flooding), Fleetwood Ave (flooding), and W**d Rd entering onto Walnut Hill (small wash out on the side of the road).

Use extreme caution when traveling tonight and tomorrow throughout the region. Other towns have major infrastructure impacts and roads washed out. TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN!

Additional rain bands are heading into the area and may result in additional flooding.
