Now: "Pica," a story by Sam Bodrojan, a writer and critic living in Chicago.

"The day after their manager Yanelli overdosed in the single-use bathroom, the staff at Gap Tooth started showing up with shards of glass stuck in their eye. Some had assumed it was strain from the dim lights, others figured it was allergies from the stuffy dining room. During the witching hour of that Saturday’s service, though, two servers ran back to expo panicking, one sifting through the others’ bloody teardrops to fish out the irritant."

Now: "The Classic Rock DMZ," a story by Kristen Gallagher, the author of 85% TRUE/MINOR ECOLOGIES (Skeleton Man Press).

"Essentially, I’m on an assignment to find out if the Fountain of Youth makes you younger. I’m getting paid by Art Papers to review Michael Marinucci’s current 'situation,' as he likes to call it. This time, for one month, he will take a daily one-hour soak in the Fountain of Youth, then take a photo to see if he gets younger over time."

"Jamie and I met one night when I was out with my sisters. I had seen him before, many times, but I don’t remember ever speaking until that night when I was dressed up like a woman and he a man. He spoke to me in lines that were easy to remember and I recited some myself thinking: don’t you recognize me from the background of your life in this town? Why am I suddenly at the center?"

Now: "Chelsea in Her Prisons," a story by Meagan Masterman, a q***r writer from Maine, living in Western Massachusetts.

"They lined up the bodies on the beach. Beneath a pine tree high up on a bluff, I watched the coast guard auxiliary drag young people over wet sand. The brutal wind kept knocking off the guards’ caps, their white hair whipping. The young people were limp and slumped and not helping the guards. It could’ve been civil disobedience, if not for the blue tint in their skin. The bloat was subtle now. It wouldn’t be subtle tomorrow, when the families started trickling in."

Now: "Sun Set," an essay by M. Gnanasihamany, an artist, writer, and curator in Tio’tia:ke.

"It is not so difficult to miss the sunset. An entire universe of infinite phenomena and over 100 million kilometers between earth and its life-giving star, the wonders of the internet inside our phones, the obstructive forces of weather, city planning, or circumstance that might hide the glowing horizon behind rain clouds, high-rise condominiums, or an especially big hill. Usually though, it is not a big hill or an especially compelling post that forbids us from witnessing the sunset. Most days, many of us are working through it."

Now: "Plastic Aztec Death Whistle," a story by Alice Kinerk, a writer and educator in Washington.

"The Aztec death whistle defines terror. Its scream is human, but at the same time inhuman. It is the voice of formless evil you always knew existed even though no one admits it. The shriek lurking in the dark. Catastrophes, atrocities, disease and death.

'For sacrifices.' Hubs smiles when I squint at the screen. 'Tomorrow I’ll 3D print one.'"
