New York, NY; July 17, 2024 — Today, Organization for Recorded Culture and Arts (ORCA) has officially launched, marking the beginning of a groundbreaking think tank, a first for the global music ecosystem, composed of leading independent music labels from around the world. ORCA’s mission is to develop and promote research, data, and qualitative and quantitative evidence that underscore the significant economic, social, and cultural value of music.

ORCA’s founding members include a diverse array of the world’s most influential independent music labels that discovered and developed the long careers of Adele, Nirvana, Christine and the Queens, The National, Mitski, ODESZA, among other leading global music artists:

“This is a concept long in the making, arising from a realization of shared values above and beyond our existing collective independent activities,” said Martin Mills, Founder and Chairman of Beggars Group. “Music is an undervalued asset in the daily round, and we seek to translate the motivations underlying its production into an appreciation that art and commerce can live as one.” - Martin Mills, Founder and Chairman, Beggars Group

“The music industry is constantly evolving, but one thing remains vital: the need to invest in artist careers and to support their work. We are excited that ORCA now exists to help independents build up collective intelligence on how best to sustain and protect cultural investments, so we can share their economic benefits as broadly and as equitably as possible." - Darius Van Arman, Co-CEO, Secretly Group

Vision for a Thriving Music Economy
ORCA is dedicated to investing in and fostering the development of music as both culture and commerce. Music holds a unique power to support all communities and the people who live in them. By demonstrating the benefits, long-term value, and return on investment for continuously supporting artists long-term while developing thriving music ecosystems, ORCA aims to highlight music’s role in transforming economies and inspiring social impact.

Recognizing the music economy and its potential to create well-paid, creatively rewarding long-term jobs is imperative. Careers and jobs are created for more than just artists and producers and are made for the entire support system: engineering, licensing, marketing, ticketing, venue staffing, and beyond. Through workforce development, music can foster social mobility, promote equity, and contribute to a forward-thinking sector that offers opportunities to artists, businesses, and communities worldwide.

Through its research, ORCA invites policymakers, business leaders, and communities to understand deeply why music matters and should be recognized as its own economic ecosystem. By providing evidence-based research, the think tank aims to arm stakeholders with tools to make music more inclusive and leverage music ecosystems to build collective value.

Launch of First Report
As part of the official launch, ORCA is proud to release its inaugural research report, "Setting the Stage: How Music Works." This comprehensive report, presented as both an interactive website and a standalone PDF, provides an in-depth introduction to the music industry specific for non-music policymakers and community leaders, detailing the complexity of its stakeholders and activities, and highlighting the extensive benefits it generates—ranging from economic and cultural to community-based impacts. ORCA will release a series of reports that will include research and data on the immense benefits of the music ecosystem for local economies, workforce development and job creation, and social issues spanning equity, sustainability, and beyond.
available here: https://www.orcaformusic.com/

“As an organization that champions the independent music sector and celebrates its successes, WIN welcomes this much-needed report, which highlights our industry’s best practices as well as the role and work of its companies and entrepreneurs. By providing concrete case studies, this new tool complements WIN's own initiatives to amplify the collective position of the global independent recorded music sector, such as the Global Independent Values and the Principles for Generative AI. This report will be particularly valuable in informing policy and supporting the remarkable efforts of trade associations around the world to promote the value of music and the strength and diversity of the independent community.” - Noemí Planas, CEO, Worldwide Independent Network (WIN)

"At A2IM, our mission is to promote equity and support the diverse voices within the independent music community. As practitioners on the front lines of helping policymakers understand a complicated ecosystem, we appreciate that the ORCA report aligns perfectly with our goals, emphasizing music's cultural and economic value. The report highlights the vital role of independent record labels and their collective efforts to drive positive change to ensure the music industry remains a vibrant and equitable space for all stakeholders." - Dr. Richard James Burgess MBE, President and CEO, A2IM (American Association of Independent Music)

"Independent labels play a crucial role in fostering economic development and growth, not just within the music industry but across a wide array of sectors. Their investments and activities create jobs, support small businesses, and drive local economies, highlighting the significant impact these labels have on the global stage. By nurturing artists and investing in diverse services and businesses, independent labels help build vibrant communities and sustainable economic ecosystems. The Organization for Recorded Culture and Arts report underscores the vital importance of supporting these independent entities for the continued prosperity and diversity of the music industry." - Nathan Ohle, President and CEO, International Economic Development Council (IEDC)

“As coordinator of the United Cities and Local Governments Culture Committee, I welcome the birth of ORCA and celebrate its commitment to developing globally relevant and translatable evidenced-based research. Only the mix of sound research, bold advocacy and collaborative work can take music’s impact on global economic and social development to the level it deserves!” - Jordi Pascual, Coordinator, UCLG Culture Committee

It's 🌍EARTH DAY! 🌍
Let's talk about VINYL + SUSTAINABILITY......What is the problem and what is Beggars doing about it?

🌍The majority of our carbon emissions, accounting for 63% of our global footprint, stem from vinyl manufacture and shipping. To meet our 50% carbon reduction goal by 2030, transitioning vinyl to a sustainable form is imperative. So what are we doing on this? What options are there? And what obstacles do we need to overcome?

🌍To understand that, we need to look into what sustainability impacts are associated with record from raw materials used in manufacture to the end of it’s life- we call this Life Cycle Analysis.

🌍Records today are still essentially made using the same process that was used when they were first mass produced 70 years ago- This process uses Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) which is heated and pressed into shape. There is some exciting innovation that completely reimagines the process favouring an injection moulded approach introducing the possibilities of using different types of plastic- these are in their infancy but we are working closely with suppliers to ensure this technology is the most sustainable it can be.

🌍Traditional PVC, poses significant pollution and recycling challenges. Biovinyl, derived from plant-based sources, is touted as a sustainable alternative, but its full lifecycle impacts and recycling limitations need careful consideration. Despite being in its early stages, a significant proportion of our test pressings are now on biovinyl, with efforts underway to ensure its quality and sustainability before wider adoption.
Although PVC is one of the hardest plastics to recycle once it has reached the end consumer it is possible to ensure that it is used in the most efficient way minimising waste in the pre consumer phase. Reusing manufacturing offcuts is one such way in which we can be more efficient- products have been available for some time that regrind manufacturing offcuts and reuse them as a feedstock into the pressing process. Although these are a step in the right direction it is in many ways the least that we can do and shouldn’t be considered as a recycled product. There are also opportunities to take overstocked items and regrind them into the manufacturing process- at Beggars we try to ensure that our overstocks are minimized, however we are working with our suppliers to set up the logistics needed to take these back into the manufacture process to make new records. We are also offering an ever-increasing number of releases that use 100% reground vinyl material.

🌍Approximately half of the carbon emissions from traditional vinyl records come from the manufacturing process rather than the raw material itself. We collaborate with suppliers committed to sustainable practices, such as Optimal, a leading pressing plant in Europe. Their sustainable practices, including using plant-based inks and recirculating heat, align with our objectives. By adopting a whole lifecycle assessment approach, we aim to minimize emissions associated with record production while addressing raw material impacts. Shifting shipping methods to sea freight further supports sustainability goals.

🌍In summary, transitioning vinyl to a low-carbon format is essential, with biovinyl emerging as a promising alternative. Sustainable manufacturing practices and a comprehensive lifecycle assessment approach guide our efforts to create a sustainable future for this cherished format.

We are happy to welcome Fontaines D.C. to XL Recordings with their highly-anticipated fourth album, ROMANCE set for release on August 23rd.

Out today is the explosive lead single “Starburster”. Inspired by a panic attack lead singer Grian Chatten suffered in London’s St Pancras station, the song is punctuated by sharp feral intakes of breath. It’s accompanied by a cinematic music video from director Aube Perrie.

https://youtu.be/KHocVRUlvkk?feature=shared

ROMANCE is the band’s first album with producer James Ford and is without doubt their most assured, inventive and sonically adventurous record yet. It’s set to build on the success of the Dublin-made, now London-based band’s acclaimed 2022 album Skinty Fia, which reached number 1 in the UK and Irish album charts and saw the band receiving a host of accolades including “International Group of the Year” at the 2023 BRIT Awards.

SAM MORTON, the musical duo comprised of singer, songwriter and acclaimed actor and director Samantha Morton and music producer and co-songwriter Richard Russell, today announce details of their highly-anticipated debut album. Titled Daffodils & Dirt, the album will be released on 14th June via XL Recordings. Over twelve startling tracks, the pair build a deeply personal musical world that feels simultaneously intimate and delicate yet powerful and tough. The part-autobiographical suite of songs see Russell’s spartan soundscapes providing a rich foundation for Morton’s gorgeous, ethereal vocal, aided by a cast of musical collaborators that include Alabaster DePlume, Laura Groves, Jack Peñate and additional vocalist Ali Campbell (on “Broxtowe Girl”).

Despite a lifelong love of, and involvement in, music, SAM MORTON is Samantha Morton’s first ever artist project. The collaboration came about after she appeared on Desert Island Discs in October 2020 and Russell happened to be listening. He was struck not only by her song choices (including a shared love of one song in particular: “I Remember” by Molly Drake) but by the way the music weaved through her lived experiences. The pair connected and corresponded, swapping ideas, sketches and stream-of-consciousnesses. Finally, months later, they met in the studio and engaged in a period of spontaneous, intense and open-ended collaboration, one which proved to be a cathartic musical process for both parties. Daffodils & Dirt, completed during 2023, is the captivating result.

Available digitally and on CD, LP and exclusive indie-store yellow vinyl LP, Daffodils & Dirt is available to pre-order here. https://sammorton.ffm.to/daffodils-dirt

The album cover artwork features an archive photograph from acclaimed British-American photographer and visual artist Nick Waplington, who documented life on Nottingham’s Broxtowe Estate at the same time Morton was growing up there in the mid-1980s.

To celebrate the news, SAM MORTON today also release new single, “Let’s Walk In The Night,” from the album. A kind of spectral, otherworldly reimagination of UK street soul, “Let’s Walk In The Night” is accompanied by a video directed by Samantha Morton herself. Filmed on location at Nottingham’s annual Goose Fair, it’s the second music video Morton has directed from the project, following her video for (and lead role in) “Cry Without End” earlier this year.

We are heartbroken to have lost our friend and long-serving colleague Jo Brooks who sadly succumbed to a long illness over the weekend.

Joining the Beggars Group from music distributor 3MV in 1999, Jo quickly became a key part of the team. With an incredible eye for detail and a fun outlook, she started out by setting up the mail order department – a role she excelled in doing, often going above and beyond to make sure everyone got what they wanted. She also spent a lot of time in her early days working on AV:Deck, the company’s then online radio station, interviewing bands in the nascent days of podcasting.

A deep fan of music with unrivalled enthusiasm, she later took her knowledge and passion across to an operational role where she first headed up digital production for the Group before managing our day-to-day workings with YouTube; a huge undertaking that involved managing myriad channels and rights in an ever-evolving landscape. She made it look easy.

Beggars Group CEO Paul Redding, who worked with Jo throughout her time at the company, said, “Jo’s passing is a huge loss to Beggars. She guided us through our first moves into D2C, was part of our first digital team and continued to be an integral part of our digital operation department through her diagnosis. Underpinning everything though was an encyclopaedic knowledge of our catalogues and her love of music. We will miss you Jo”

Global Head of Digital Operations Tim Roddis pays tribute, “As the longest standing member of the Digital Operations team at Beggars, Jo was central to what we do, with us through every change, every up and down. Her limitless knowledge of our catalogue proved invaluable countless times on the many projects we worked on together. Always keen for an early morning chat and a cup of coffee to catch up on what was going on. I know I speak for the whole team, past and present, when I say we will miss Jo immeasurably both as a colleague and more importantly, as a friend.”

A huge fan of 4AD, the label’s Head of A&R Ed Horrox, who also worked with Jo throughout her time at Beggars, remembers her fondly, “In the days before social media, Jo was a perfect bridge between 4AD artists and a group of seriously committed fans. They knew they could turn to Jo for any information and she would sometimes correct them if necessary when things got heated in the chat rooms. She loved to know as much as possible about developments in an artist’s career. I can remember distinctly the look of excitement and the sound of her voice as we would talk, for example, about a new Breeders record. She is a legend in the world of 4AD and will be sadly missed.”

Leaving us too soon, nothing was ever too much for Jo. She was always warm and welcoming, wanting the best for everyone and never shy of taking on new tasks. We are going to miss her terribly. We were so lucky to know her and even luckier to be able to call her one of our own.

Our love and deepest condolences to Jo’s family and her friends, of whom there are many – a reflection on just how special Jo was.

Last week, Mdou Moctar's new album ‘Funeral For Justice’ was announced and will be released on May 3rd via Matador Records. Recorded at the close of two years spent touring the globe following the release of 2021 breakout ‘Afrique Victime,’ it captures the Nigerien quartet in ferocious form. The music is louder, faster, and more wild. The guitar solos are feedback-scorched and the lyrics are passionately political. Nothing is held back or toned down. The quartet will perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April and will embark on a headline tour in June with dates in the US, UK, and EU.

Today, on International Women's Day, Kim Gordon has released her new album 'The Collective' via Matador Records. Recorded in Gordon’s native Los Angeles, 'The Collective' follows her 2019 full-length debut 'No Home Record' and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen (Lil Yachty, John Cale, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Charli XCX, Yves Tumor), with additional production from Anthony Paul Lopez. The album advances their joint world building, with Raisen’s damaged, blown out dub and trap constructions playing the foil to Gordon’s intuitive word collages and hooky mantras, which conjure communication, commercial sublimation and sensory overload.

Earlier this week she released a video for the track "Psychedelic Or**sm", directed by Kim Gordon and musician/filmmaker/producer Vice Cooler. With its quick cuts and upside down tableaus of desiccated pumpkins, giant inflatables and shopping mall escalators, the Los Angeles-set clip is as disorienting as “Psychedelic Or**sm” itself.

"What Gordon has proved in this past decade is that her art, her life, her cool…has never been contingent upon anyone else. With time, and through continued art-making, she has righted her own ship and pointed it once again in the direction of thrillingly uncharted waters." - NEW YORK TIMES

"vicious and brilliant..a maelstrom of mundane thoughts and funny asides and flashes of pure rage whipped into a heavy, unnerving fog.. Few are better equipped than Gordon—who, at 70, is still cooler, smarter, and more fearless than most—to guide us through" - PITCHFORK

"For decades in Sonic Youth and on her own, Gordon's exuded her own kind of avant-garde cool, but forging her own lane through thrashing, trash-rap? We are not ready for this shaking hell." - NPR

Yesterday, Kamasi Washington announced his new album, Fearless Movement - set for release May 3 via Young. A new song, “Prologue,” debuted alongside a video directed by longtime collaborator AG Rojas and choreographed by Samantha Blake Goodman. Additionally, Washington unveiled plans for an extensive North American tour kicking off May 4 at New York’s Beacon Theatre with further dates including Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, which he will co-curate with Herbie Hancock for the second year in a row, on June 16.

Washington calls Fearless Movement his dance album. “It’s not literal,” Washington says. “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music—expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”
Dance as an embodied form of expression signals a shift in focus for Washington. Where previous albums dealt with cosmic ideas and existential concepts, Fearless Movement focuses in on the everyday, an exploration of life on earth. This change in scope is due in large part to the birth of Washington’s first child a few years ago.
“Being a father means the horizon of your life all of a sudden shows up,” says Washington. “My mortality became more apparent to me, but also my immortality—realizing that my daughter is going to live on and see things that I’m never going to see. I had to become comfortable with this, and that affected the music that I was making.”

The album features Washington’s daughter—who wrote the melody to “Asha The First” during some of her first experimentations on the piano—as well as a host of collaborators new and old. André 3000 appears on flute, George Clinton lends his voice, as do BJ The Chicago Kid, Inglewood rapper D-Smoke and Taj and Ras Austin of Coast Contra, the twin sons of West Coast legend Ras Kass. Washington further enlisted lifelong friends and collaborators Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Patrice Quinn, Brandon Coleman, DJ Battlecat and more.

The album also features “The Garden Path,” a song Washington performed for the first time ever, making his late-night television debut, on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date—The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth—are among the most acclaimed of this century. As Told To G/D Thyself, his short film companion to Heaven and Earth, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. In 2020, Washington scored the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, earning Emmy and Grammy nominations for his work. Also in 2020, Washington co-founded the supergroup Dinner Party with longtime friends and collaborators Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper and 9th Wonder—their EP Dinner Party (Dessert) was subsequently nominated for a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album. In 2021, he contributed a cover of Metallica’s “My Friend of Misery” to the band’s Metallica Blacklist covers project. Washington has toured the world over and collaborated and shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock and many more.

Last week, XL Recordings announced the upcoming EP by Nourished By Time - Catching Chickens, which will be released on March 22nd. He also shared the new single and self-directed music video for "Hand On Me".
https://youtu.be/IYXPDZHZcqg?feature=shared

2023 was a transformative year for the Baltimore singer-songwriter and producer, Nourished By Time. His critically-acclaimed debut album, Erotic Probiotic 2 picked up Pitchfork’s 'Best New Music' and featured on ‘Best Of 2024’ lists on Gorilla vs Bear ( #1), Pitchfork ( #5), The Guardian, The Fader, Paste and more. He collaborated with Yaeji on “Happy” from her debut album With A Hammer and remixed Dry Cleaning’s “Gary Ashby”, who he also supported on tour. Meanwhile, he embarked across Europe for his debut headline tour before returning to the US to open for Vagabon.

Signing to XL Recordings, Nourished By Time returns to announce his new EP Catching Chickens will be released on 22 March. Written between 2022 - 2023 in his home studio in Baltimore, Catching Chickens takes inspiration from the iconic scene in Rocky II where his trainer makes him chase and catch chickens as a test of agility. With tracks like “Hell of a Ride,” in which Nourished By Time contemplates the fall of the American empire and late-stage capitalism loneliness, and “Had Ya Called”, which deals with the frustrations of growing distance in friendships, Nourished By Time chronicles his own test of agility as he weaves through the motions of his newfound notability.

To celebrate the EP news, Nourished By Time releases “Hand On Me” single and music video. Shot by Josh Renaut, “Hand on Me,” explores paranoia that corrodes love and trust in a traumatic relationship. As Nourished By Time puts it, “the video is about being reminded that you’re an angel by other angels, featuring a surrealist commentary on celebrity culture”

Recently, Adrianne Lenker shared the new single ‘Fool’ from her upcoming album, Bright Future, out on March 22nd via 4AD. With bent, plucked, and trembling strings, ‘Fool’ chases its tail for answers with softened beach glass geometry. “If I were him, would you be my family too?” she asks an indecisive lover who wishes to live two lives at once. Adrianne finds no advice. A course is needed, any direction will do. “Just say what it is that you want.” It is the doldrums sailors fear. “What more can I possibly say? / So if you wanna go I say baby okay, okay.”

Accompanying the single is another video directed by Adrianne’s brother, Noah Lenker, featuring Adrianne’s family and their dogs. “I feel like I can hear her laughing and smiling when I listen back to this song. The joy is palpable,” says producer Philip Weinrobe. “It’s easy to forget that Adrianne can do unbridled ecstatic happiness just as deftly as every other emotion in the human experience.” One of the first songs recorded for the album and one of only a handful captured at night, Weinrobe sets the scene: “the fireplace was ripping, Oso was barking, and the vibe was just right. After we captured this one I knew we were gonna make a special record.”

The amazing Charlotte Day Wilson has announced her highly-anticipated sophomore album 'Cyan Blue', out 3rd May via XL Recordings.

Cyan Blue finds Charlotte crafting a smoothly woven cyan tapestry of her eternal influences; thumping gospel piano, warm soul basslines, atmospheric electronics, and penetrating R&B melodies. Yet, it possesses a sense of vastness that rings in a new era for CDW, one in which she’s embracing collaboration and newfound creative openness, tinged with a reflection on youthful innocence. Speaking about the process of making of the record, Charlotte says:

"I want to look through the unjaded eyes of my younger self again. Before there wasn’t as much baggage, before so much life was lived. But I also wish that my younger self could see where I am now. It would be nice to be able to impart some of the wisdom and clarity that I have now onto her."

'I Don't Love You' accompanies the new album announcement. The track arrives with a visual directed by Dani Aphrodite which features layered low fi footage of Charlotte performing at home, living every day life and having moments of solitude in her car, a theme that comes up throughout Cyan Blue.

"This song is meant to remind us that losing love & leaving can be just as inspiring as finding it." - Charlotte Day Wilson

Join Charlotte Day Wilson for the YouTube Premiere of I Don't Love You on Thursday, Feb 22 @ 10am EST / 3pm BSTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlotte...
