Weekly Update:

Last week, I toured Au Sable Forks with Christine Bush of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) and Leslie Krupa from the NYS Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation to discuss the possible boundary of the proposed Historic District to be submitted to the National Registry of Historic Places. AARCH will be doing the research and write the application for submission to create the Historic District of Au Sable Forks. This work is being done with a Preserve NY grant that was recently awarded with the help of The Cloudsplitter Foundation and 25% of matching funds of occupancy tax funds. A National Registry designation will open up funding for businesses and residents to work on building maintenance and appearance. This designation does not restrict anyone inside the boundary to do as they wish with their property.

This week is going to be a very busy week in the Town of Jay, NY. Our town meetings are this week for the Planning Board on Wednesday at 6:00pm and our Town Board on Thursday at 7:00pm. Both meetings will be available virtually and posted on the website within a few days for you to view. On Saturday, we will be holding our first Sustainability and Energy Fair with the Town of Keene at the Jay Village Green and Amos & Julia Ward Theater. This event will have seminars by local experts about electric vehicles, heat pumps, solar energy, and composting. There will be activities for kids to make this event fun for the entire family. Stop by this event on Saturday, September 14th between the hours of 10:00am to 3:00pm. Hope to see you there!

Save the date, our next Amnesty day will be September 21st from 8:00am to 3:00pm or until the bins are full. The collection day is available for Town of Jay residents and proof of residency is required. The attached flyer lists the items available for drop off. This year, Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District has secured a tire bin for us to fill with tire. The attached flyer lists the allowable tires to be dropped off. Let’s keep our town clean and dispose of these items. See you there!

Hope you have a great week,
Matt.

Weekly Update:

This week the Town of Black Brook will be holding a Community Neighborhood Watch meeting for Au Sable Forks at their town hall on Wednesday, August 21st at 6:00pm. I will be there as a representative for the Town of Jay, NY in support of this effort. As stated in their original post, “We all agree that someone has to do something and we all need to be that someone. If you are looking for change within our community, we urge you to attend!” I agree and fully support this initiative with our neighbors. I look forward to seeing you all there!

This week New York State Department of Transportation will begin work on the culvert replacement on NYS Rt. 9N near the intersection of NYS Rt. 86. Here is the release from NYS DOT:
“The anticipated start date will be Monday, August 19 with a single lane closure set up during the day from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:30 pm. The contractor will be performing work on the waterline in preparation of the FULL CLOSURE OF ROUTE 9N BETWEEN ROUTE 86 AND GLEN ROAD. The anticipated start date of the FULL CLOSURE is Monday September 2. The actual date may change but be prepared for the last week of August / first week of September. The FULL CLOSURE of Route 9N is expected to take SIX WEEKS. Traffic will be directed to a signed, off-site detour route which will utilize Route 9N, John Fountain Road and County Route 82 (Glen Road). During the closure, all properties and businesses in the area will remain accessible to residents and emergency responders. A temporary sidewalk will be installed on the westside of Route 9N to allow pedestrian traffic through the work zone.” Attached is the map of the detour.

The Community Center construction is just about finished and will open to the public this week. We will be getting the electrical hooked up to the automatic doors as soon as time allows, but the doors will work manually like they have in the past. The lift has received it final inspection and is ready for use. Thank you for bearing with us during this reconstruction.

Hope you have a great week,
Matt.

[12:15 PM] This band of rain has been pretty persistent through Clinton County into the Champlain Islands and northwest Vermont, approaching 1 inch per hour on some backyard rain gauges. Occasional cracks of thunder and torrential rain. Wouldn't be surprised if some minor flooding was ongoing: myNBC5.com/radar

[8/8/24] Post-Tropical Debby will move through Friday-Saturday morning. It will bring periods of heavy rain that could cause scattered flash and river flooding. Right now, confidence is highest in the heaviest rain falling over northern New York but the axis could shift

We have a serious situation developing for late this week. Friday into Saturday. Remnants of Debby. Numerous flash floods likely in the red shaded area. Some could bring significant damage. River flooding likely as well. The highest risk area may shift some in the coming days.

Ugh. Not what you want to see on the newest run of FutureCast.

Confidence is increasing for a band of extremely heavy rain tomorrow afternoon into early Thursday. Don't focus on exact numbers, focus on potential. This doesn't mean Middlebury and Montpelier specifically see 6-7 inches... but some towns will. Exact placement of that mega-band is still a question, but we expect it to be somewhere in our region.

Monday late evening update: the potential for an intense band of rain from Beryl, Wednesday afternoon through night, remains. Guidance has shifted north a bit. Don't lock in this position yet. We think the heaviest will be somewhere between northern NY/VT and Montréal.

We are NOT showing you this because it is a perfect depiction. Rather, it shows potential. Yes, in the heaviest downpours, 3 to 6 inches are possible Wednesday into early Thursday. There is time for this to shift and it COULD miss us. But, got to start thinking about it.
