People make mistakes. People realize it later on. People with integrity admit their mistakes when they recognize them. Good on Kate Mulgrew for saying all of this and making it clear that she was at fault, not Jeri Ryan.

Good! Now we just need that lawsuit Barry Diller keeps saying is coming, charging AI companies with plagiarism.

This week, the RIAA is suing the generative AI music startups behind Suno and Udio, claiming they've illegally trained their models on copyrighted music. The lawsuit reveals that you can enter simple prompts and get near-perfect clones of existing songs, down to the melody, harmony, lyrics, and arra...

I truly don't understand why people want to use technology that lies. Don't people do that enough?

But billionaires are going to exploit, and they want to embed generative "AI" into as many things as possible as quickly as possible to make society dependent on it while they eliminate human workers. Who they think will then buy their products without money, I don't know. Looks to me like that old South Park routine about underwear and profits.

In a new Washington Post interview, Apple CEO Tim Cook admitted that he's not "100 percent" sure the company's AI will stop lying.

There were indications of generative AI lying before and specifically lying based on prior prompts to manipulate the user. This shows it has gotten even worse.

"GPT- 4, for instance, exhibits deceptive behavior in simple test scenarios 99.16% of the time," the University of Stuttgart researcher writes, citing his own experiments in quantifying various "maladaptive" traits in 10 different LLMs, most of which are different versions within OpenAI's GPT family.

AI models are, apparently, getting better at lying on purpose -- and that might not be good news for us humans.

If you're pursuing traditional publishing, you want to read this. It covers a lot of aspects of AI clauses in contracts and things to be alert for.

One portion:

"The big questions include who holds which rights in the first place, and how to split payment between authors and publishers if AI companies do pay to license books. Authors hold rights to their book, as well as related works like sequels, prequels, or screenplays. But publishers hold rights to publish or license summaries and abridgments of books. Plus, since so much of the copyediting and formatting is done in-house, authors often don’t even have a copy of the complete, final manuscript. Authors and publishers will need to work together to figure out who controls licensing.

"The AALA's position, per a statement to PL, is that: "The right to license a work for the training of generative AI rests with the creator or copyright holder and should not be used without consent and compensation. AALA favors the establishment of licensing mechanisms and marketplaces to the extent that they facilitate an opt-in model for copyright holders."

"Though wholesale licensing with publishing companies might not render the best deal for authors. A publisher making a catalog licensing deal with a tech company for all of their titles could reap a substantial sum in the aggregate, while individual authors' pro-rated share of the license would likely be very small. Plus there is the existential concern: As generative AI technology becomes more sophisticated, it soon may be able to create books that compete directly with authors.

"Why would any author be interested in that?" Lipskar said. "Do you think authors are that stupid: Give me a few hundred bucks and help create a system that's going to make the value of my future work less? Even my current work will be reduced in value as consumer book dollars flow to the new competition. Even if that's going to happen to me anyway, why would I take a couple hundred dollars of blood money to enable it to happen?"

"Plus, such a deal could allow the technology to create derivative works. "It'd be like agreeing to a deal with a film company for an option purchase on your author’s book, in which you granted them novelization rights," he said."

Hate the new "AI overview" default in Chrome that prioritizes AI results, even when they're wrong, instead of reputable sites with long histories of accuracy? THERE ARE SOLUTIONS!

First, when Chrome added this horrendous default, it also added a "web" option under "more" that gets you results without AI overview just like the "image" and "news" options (though it can't protect you from websites that are switching over to AI-created copy, like the formerly reliable Healthline.

OR, you can use the instructions here (I just tried it. It works) to create a Google shortcut that defaults to the Web results.

Interestingly, if you search for "how to remove AI overview from Google Chrome" without using the "Web" option, the results say you can't turn it off.. I wonder why?

Feel free to share this far and wide because I'm finding that AI hashtags that are less than favorable tend to suffer in terms of reach. I wonder why? (sarcasm. I know why)

Chrome extensions are also sprouting up to address this but as the creator of one such extension mentioned, if Google tweaks its code, those extensions won't work.

Also, DuckDuckGo hasn't incorporated AI into its search engine, so that's another option. However, for reasons too complicated to list here, I do have to use Chrome for some projects. I use DuckDuckGo for everything else now.

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/we-dont-have-to-live-like-this-you-can-set-chrome-to-default-to-googles-new-nonsense-free-web-search-which-also-completely-bypasses-that-awful-ai-answer-box/

Web search is great, and it's not too hard to set it to be your default.

Sage and Lehrman are correct, but copyright laws don't apply in this case. We need a massive overhaul to our privacy laws as well as laws that clearly state that people own their own likeness, voice and DNA (read the fine print of those DNA tests, whether they're medical or for geneology).
