New resource alert! At the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild, we want to make sure our word choices are as uplifting and inclusive as possible because words are powerful. We have compiled an Inclusive Language Resource to help educate and assist writers and editors in being aware of words, phrases, descriptions, etc. that could be harmful to readers and to assist in suggesting alternatives to writers so that the writing is not harmful. Please note that we do not have any partnerships with the organizations or people whose guides and information we link to in this resource, nor is this document an exhaustive list. There is always more learning we can all do and continue to do; therefore, this guide will be a living document.

Find the document here: https://skwriter.com/resources/resources-for-inclusive-language

Tumblr user faustandfurious:

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:

The protagonist isn’t always right
The protagonist isn’t always good
The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable
The narrator isn’t always right
The narrator isn’t always good
The narrator isn’t always telling the truth
The narrator isn’t always the author
The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap
Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say
Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say
A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books

Tonight's the night! We'll be getting together TONIGHT at 6:30 P.M. CST to watch this month's litfilm: Bride and Prejudice! The Bollywood film stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Lila (Lizzie), Martin Henderson as Darcy, and Naveen Andrews as Balraj (Bingley). This is another great adaptation that shows how creative you can get while still being faithful to the original text.

You don't need to have read or know the text to join. It's a fun way to spend some time together and we spend time talking about the movie at the end.

If you'd like to join in, please send us an email to: [email protected] or a DM and we'll make sure you get a link.

The writing prompts read:

1. Google the Art Gallery of Ontario's Malcolmson Collection (or follow the link in our bio) and choose one of the photographs that makes you stop. Sit with it for a while and write about whatever speaks to you about it. You can also read about the work you chose (or multiple), or Google the piece to view it from different angles.

2. Try writing a poem about a common object in your house. It can be something with symbolic meaning, or simply about the practicality of the item. Try to give it some quality that makes it interesting, or more than just an object. Examples of object poems include "Tear Cup" by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater and "Candles" by Constantine P. Cavafy.

If the writing prompt strikes you, let us know! We'd love to read whatever you come up with.

About Wheat & Laurel

Wheat & Laurel is a rural writing journal for teens ages 12-19 within the Camrose, Alberta area. We’re focused on trying to create a community to help support and encourage young writers who may not have access or resources available in their rural communities.

Young writers can submit their writing to [email protected] and have their work read and critiqued by a passionate editorial board who will choose a selection of writing to be published in a bi-annual print edition. All our young writers will be compensated for their writing, since teaching young creators that their work has worth is an important part to their future successes.
