Growing up I was put into a massive echo chamber on a weekly basis where intermittently, for one hour, hundreds of people would all attempt to sing the same melody microtones off from one another at varying tempos with monstrous organ sounds filling the space. This mass of impressionistic wavering voices resonating with reverb drenched organ and infant screams has provided me with a sonic blueprint that seems to permeate all my musical tinkerings.

This record is my closest attempt at fusing my love of free improv, electronic music, avant chamber, and pop. These songs, at their core, are pop compositions that behave as dream-like environments to meander within; simultaneously alien and organic.

I have named the record Church because it was shaped by Catholic guilt and the life long marriage of trauma and enlightenment that ensues. Each song is decades worth of seeking autonomy while self-medicating (sonically/musically) through the cognitive dissonance of my childhood to present.

Hello everyone, About a week ago, we announced the new Spookfish album and video game. This one has been in the works for a long time. Through the pandemic, Dan and myself would hike daily through the somber, still wintered trees. He spoke frequently about a video game he was designing to go along with music he created. At the time, I had no idea that video games could be created by single person using a single laptop and he introduced me to a whole community of people doing the same as he to convey a story, mood or emotional state the same way that musicians do. Long ago I offered to help the only way I know how, to help record the music to bring it to higher fidelity and to release the vinyl which does come with the video game. Both of which are released officially on September 7th. The vinyl will include an instructional zine to help you navigate the digital world the Spookfish created.

We Be Friends is pleased to release the latest from Chicago digital freaknik RXM Reality (né Mike Meegan), a three-part suite of new recordings that follow up on a string of releases on modern luminaries Hausu Mountain and Orange Milk. Packed to the gills with hyper-kinetic arrangements and a deft sense of the line between structure and chaos, WEWEREFRIENDS offers an in-depth review of the artist’s range as a producer and performer, moving through genres and formats at a breakneck pace.

Meegan has producing under the RXM Reality moniker for the past 8 years, honing a textural, labyrinthine vision of digital maximalism, dotting his works with sudden tempo changes, explosions of dissonant noise, and song structures that mine tensions between pop, black metal, breakcore, hip-hop and even the frayed-nerve sonics of contemporaries like Bonnie Baxter, Fire-Toolz and Machine Girl. Having shared the stage with Actress, Laurel Halo, Elysia Crampton, and Eartheater, Meegan’s work sits among a cadre of producers mining a taut interplay between the grammar and sonics of modern club production, noise and pop.

For this release on We Be Friends, Meegan takes this same compositional dynamic, and presses it towards the arc of the album itself. Recorded this past spring, the release opens with a series of turbo-charged pop cuts, a series of micro-mythologies featuring human protagonists finding guidance and power from demonic forces, into contemplative washes of ambience, closing on a series of recent instrumental tunes. Pulling at the tropes and constructs of dance music, noise and pop composition are followed and flouted at turns, twisting the viewer on their ear at a moment’s notice.
