How many times have you died? Released someone, something or yourself and waded through waters grieving what you once loved and knowing it no longer served you?

Join me on an exploration of Death—not just dying, not merely grief, but Death itself. Together, we will delve into the concept of Death as more than a singular event. Instead, we’ll navigate it as a profound chasm in space and time, a recurring season that unfolds in our lives over and over again.

I’ll be your guide through these episodes, sharing original written work that I, Thea Monyee, have crafted. For a deeper and more immersive podcast experience, I encourage you to join me on Patreon. As a member, you’ll gain access to powerful video recordings of each episode and have the opportunity to join me for a Q&A session. This is your chance to ask anything about the podcast, to be present in the room with me, and to feel the energy as I explore these possibilities alongside you. Join me on this journey, and let’s uncover the profound mysteries that Death holds for us.

Diving 19ft was a tall task for me.

When I was 30 years olds my mother called me on a Monday morning to tell me my father was dead. 6ft tall and he drown in 3ft of water.

When I was 33 I was talked out of every instinctual decision I had about giving birth for the first time. Two c-sections and 9 years later I was till searching for my body.

“Come with me to the other side of the world” said and “I will hold you sacred.” And I released the how & said yes.

And there we were in the middle of the sea. I’m on all fours breathing, laboring and trying to overcome the fear that my body will fail me in the deep blue, thinking of the message my love sent me that morning: “Before there was land, there was water” trying to overcome the memory of my panic attack in the water the day before, the cuts from the coral still fresh on my flesh.

And my friend rocked with me, rubbed by back, put a cold towel on my neck and lulled me into humming. The tears came.

And I dove in and my body showed up for me and I left all of the weight of not forgiving my father before he died, of being Black and pregnant and not heard and I felt all of body and we have not parted since. My life has been split in two. Before and after my dear friend ushered me through a rebirth.

Thank you I’m so grateful you surrender and allow Spirit & Oya to guide you, use you.

And I’m so proud of myself. I’m gonna say that to myself more. So proud to truly living the pillars of this podcast: healing, creativity, and liberation to live free this lifetime and motherhood shouldn’t be a hindrance to that but in this world, the way capitalism is set up, it can feel that way so it’s not always easy.

This podcast could have gone a million different ways. I’m proud that I remain steadfast to our intention beyond the mic.

Mamas. I hope you find space to release weight & and friend to be a witness.

Get you a friend that will take you to the Gate of Gods and the Magic Lake, holy places.

Get you a friend that will make sure AAALLLL the pictures are taken, that will capture you, that will be
a witness

so your ascendents will know you smiled and it wasn’t all pain.

Get you a friend that will sit with you by the coral reef, quietly.

Get you a friend that will take you to the other side of the world, to the desert, to the sea so you can feel your Black body on ancient soil.

Get you a friend that will hold you sacred.

I have trusted with my deepest wounds. This year I’m so grateful that I put my deepest healing in her hands.

Thanks for the journey Mama!

There’s over 25 years of friendship on this podcast & I’m eternally grateful to be behind the mic with women who have some of my greatest teachers.

Grief and Black motherhood are not strangers. We are known to openly and unapologetically grieve the loss of our children.

Yet, when it comes to miscarriages and infant loss, our faces are invisible. We are there. We are in pain. We are struggling to understand.

Words like “Your body was made for this” leave Black mothers feeling like failures, shrouded in shame.

So, how do we find our way forward?
Someone lights a path, carves out a road, and travels into the void to create community. Someone like of podcast.

Her work is not easy. Her podcast can be a hard listen, but whether you have lost a child or not, we encourage you to listen. It is a reminder that:
✨healing is always available
✨we are not alone
✨we don’t have to be strong

And most importantly, Black mamas deserve soft places to land & tell their story.

We celebrate you Erica! Thank you for your willingness to do the hard work and document our stories.

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. Check out Erica’s platform to learn how you can support & uplift the stories of Black mother’s who have experienced pregnancy and/or infant loss.

“Get you a friend committed to evolution, who always chooses elevation & joy!

Get you a friend that understands & has witnessed you’re healing and is willing to be a guide.

Get you a friend that will ride behind on you on a four wheeler in the desert and smoke hooku and talk about what the desert taught you about love:

✨Love is the relentless pursuit of your highest being and we fear loving what we cannot control.

Get you a friend that creates experiences that produces pictures that can’t just live in your phone. They must be printed and framed so on hard days you can look up and remember [insert whatever you need]

Get you a friend that will hold you sacred.

Thanks for the ride 💗

Dear

We wanted to give you some flowers as you near the end of your final season journey..

When your voice slides into our ears we are reminded to slow down, to listen to ourselves and not knowing is a vital part of our parenthood journey that’s how we evolve and that’s how parenting becomes an experience not a grinding routine.

We are grateful for your courage to lean into unschooling when it was labeled “wh?te folx do”. You showed us that this was about Black liberation and healing, that much of our learning was boundless and borderless. That unschooling was about raising free people & buidling

was one of the first Black mom podcast we tuned into. You’ve been a friend and a guide to us. Thank you for always welcoming us. Thank you for introducing us to new voices. Thank you for gifting us with an archive dedicated to We are so grateful your work will live while you transition to the next chapter. We are excited to be a witness.

✨✊🏾💗

If you haven’t tuned into the final season of do yourself a favor and plug in & drop some love.

Thank you for saying YES! For you’re willingness to go deep with us and share your menopause journey AND enlighten us about your spiritual path. Being in conversation with you was a journey and a JOY! Thank you for your work and reminding us “you don’t fall off a cliff when you go through menopause,”for reminding us there’s pleasure and infinite possibilities on the dark side of the moon, and we are worthy of guides to hold our hand through transitions.

You spirit is infectious! And we are grateful you took up space and made space for Black women’s voices in the menopausal multiverse. Thank you for being a guide.

Dear Kay

Thank you for your vision. You have reminded us that our minds matter, just as much as our wombs.

✨💗✊🏾

It’s & on let’s show the founder Kay Matthews BIG LOVE!

Kay Matthews founded the Shades of Blue Project in 2013, shortly after the stillborn death of her daughter Troya Simone. The successful owner of Extraordinary Cakes and Catering shifted into full-time advocacy for Black birthing individuals after launching her Non-Profit organization BabyCakes and Brunch, from which the Shades of Blue Project was created. As she built the Shades of Blue Project, she understood that she was not alone in her experience and that the maternal morbidity rates of Black women were only worsening. Also true was that Black maternal mental health support systems were non-existent, poorly managed, or resulted in Black mothers having their children removed from their homes. This lack of Black maternal mental health care and continued ill-treatment of Black birthing individuals spurred Matthews to create the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Method Training. A unique training based on compassion, I.N.S.P.I.R.E. is specific to women of color and minorities and can be implemented by doulas, midwives, clinicians, and those facilitating support groups. She also created Black Maternal Mental Health Week (BMMHW)—a week-long event that focuses on the challenges that persist, viable solutions, community support, and compassion training. During BMMHW, lay persons, healthcare workers, community members and leaders, and families can partake in a two-day summit, community brunch, and a 3K Family Walk. The event is held annually from July 19 through July 25.

🚨EVENT ALERT 🚨

Yall know we ain’t new to this we true to this when it comes to bringing ancestral practices forward.

So LET’S GO DEEPER. When dropped this idea we were like LET’S GO!

In this workshop/conversation, we will discuss how understanding the relationship between Orishas and birth can ground your work and center the birthing person.

We want more than survival for Black birthing folx & for birth workers to feel their work is about more than navigating trauma in the name of advocacy. We want EVERYONE to feel whole in the midst of and while practicing this sacred work.

We’re excited to have an Ifa, Oya, Osun Priestess riding with us on this one!

29/06/2023

“I want my children to remember that I was more than just their mother. I want them to say, “She was an artist. She was creative and fearless. She never gave up on her dreams.” I do not want my children to think motherhood is where dreams go to die. I want them to know that motherhood is where dreams are born again and nurtured with support, dedication, and hard work. I want my children to know me as funny, free, and fly. I want them to see me as a good sister with unflinching loyalty to women. It is true that children change your life but they do not stop dreams.

We do that to ourselves.

When the walls of self-sacrifice begin to close in on you and the weight of the false image of motherhood begins to break your backbone, remember this: God gave us the privilege of discovering ourselves. Remember, nothing should ever die when we find real love. I wrote that journal entry as a constant reminder that it is okay to let go of dreams as long as we do not forget how to dream. We teach our children how to be through our being. As mothers we often get caught up in the “doing,” teaching children that we only acquire love by what we do, not because of who we are. Do not make motherhood the graveyard of your dreams. Motherhood is more beautiful, more sacred, and more precious than that. I challenge every mother reading this to find someone to hold your feet to the fire.”

✨Sometimes we need a reminder✨

Dear Mama,

Just because you don't see the fruits of your labor doesn't mean the seeds aren't growing. Whether it's a dream you're manifesting or your child, trust that the soil you planted in is fertile. Continue to water your dreams and nurture your children. Your fruit will manifest in divine timing.

26/06/2023

Dear Mama,

What if I told you understanding menopause was a matter of life and death? In her 2022 book You Got Anything Stronger, Gabrielle Union went into deep detail about how in her words “the surge and retreat of hormones” during perimenopause and menopause caused her to have passive suicidal ideations and pointed out that science has focused on hiding symptoms or treating the symptoms of menopause that have mattered most to men like vaginal dryness. The part of Union’s book that made me pause, see what I did there, was when Union stated “According to a 2020 CDC study the su***de rate among women is highest for those ages 45-64” and calls out how women’s depression is often linked to men or their children, focusing on the external features of women’s lives and not the internal. That’s when I knew we had to do an episode about Menopause and I knew just who turn to creator of the platform which includes a podcast of the same name.

is the perfect time to drop this episode. Burney-Scott is an trailblazer in this field, roots her work her spirituality producing creative projects such as Messages From the Menopausal Multiverse. In this episode, we talk:

People always ask me about starting a podcast. Well there are hundreds of “how to guides” out there (check out 😉) and I don’t believe in reinventing the wheel especially if there’s a Black woman already doing it WELL.

“Moms create in the margins.” -

We create, pursue our dreams after all is said and done for everyone else. It takes time to learn to carve out time for yourself, to learn to take time because it’s rarely ever given to you. Saying no to others so you can say yes to yourself is a muscle you build over time. It takes practice, in a world that reveres mothers but makes little space for us to actually mother lead alone dream and create.

So every little bit counts Mama. It all adds up and & y’all know WE LOVE tangible tools so we’re giving away one book a week that has inspired us on our journey. These books gave us the tools to inspire us and helped us with consistency, self acceptance & discovering our magic and we hope they do the same for you.

Next up is & this week we’ll be talking:
✨What do we mean when we say
✨What tools & resources does that require
✨Is it a privilege to be able to build your own table

Plus we’ll be announcing the events.

So if you’re a or the mother of a creative Thursday LIVE at NoonPT/3pmET time for a chance to win.

See Yall Thursday!

When I took acting class she would always remind us that ‘God can dream a bigger dream for you than you can ever dream for yourself.’ I learned my job was to dream and believe in the work I was doing. When I look at this photo that’s what I see. I always knew I was destined to be a part of a movement but I could have never imagined this one

When we talk about we are talking about
✨ReproductiveJustice
✨Joy & Liberation
✨Healing & Creativity

That’s not erasing the shameful statistics. It helps us to remember that that’s not the be all and end all of this movement. We must get as comfortable talking about Black folx, birth, & liberation as we are discussing Black folx, birth & death. It’s remembering Black folx have the right to LIVE & THRIVE.

And I am immensely grateful to be a part of it and I am proud of myself:
👉🏾for having the courage to reach out to in their infancy because I believed in their intention
👉🏾I’m proud of myself for building a platform committed to amplifying
👉🏾I’m proud that even when I was afraid, even when I didn’t know what I was doing or where this was going, I followed my instincts. I trusted myself.

I’m so grateful to have been a part of this day, this conversation, sharing the stage with these powerful Black women.

More than grateful though, I am inspired and I got BIG dreams yall and I have no doubt God is gonna blow my mind.

Thank you so much for you work, for your vision and your willingness to build and share.
