Let's congratulate Treetops Collective for being a nominee for 2023rd ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award. Treetops collective, celebrates the incredible journeys of refugee and immigrant women as they find strength, independence, and a sense of belonging.
Munira Mohamad, a dedicated leader at treetops, shared inspiring stories that highlight the transformative power of our programs:
1) The Courageous Young Mother:
A young mother of three found the strength to break free from an abusive relationship. With treetops' support, she gained confidence, secured a job, learned English, and became self-sufficient. Her journey is a testament to the resilience of refugee women.
2) From Dependence to Heroism:
A widow experienced a complete transformation after the loss of her husband. With treetops' guidance, she learned life skills, gained independence, and prioritized her children's education. She is an inspiration to us all.
3) Overcoming Isolation and Dominance:
Refugees often face isolation and uncertainty. Treetops provides comfort, guidance, and a sense of belonging. By navigating unfamiliar systems and embracing independence, refugee women find their voice in a male-dominated society.

Our 2023 ATHENA LEADERSHIP RECIPIENT! Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, a passionate advocate and a trailblazer in women's leadership!

Rosalynn holds a Master's degree in Social Work from Michigan State University and has dedicated her career to addressing domestic violence and child welfare. Her work as a medical social worker and involvement in a domestic violence program fueled her commitment to prevention and raising awareness.

As a proactive community member, Rosalynn joined voluntary boards in Kent County, serving on various teams focused on child welfare and domestic violence. Her dedication and leadership skills led her to become a chairperson on these boards, making a significant impact on the community.

Rosalynn's journey in public service began as a city commissioner, where she fought passionately for accessible facilities for children. Recognizing her potential, Mayor Hartwell encouraged her to run for mayor, and in 2015, Rosalynn was elected. She was reelected in 2019, continuing to make a positive difference in the community.

Rosalynn believes in creating a city where people can live their best lives, connected, valued, and loved. She aims to foster an emotional connection to the community and strives to provide opportunities, great schools, education, green spaces, parks, and vibrant arts and culture.

Rosalynn's leadership journey and dedication to creating a better community highlight the power of women in leadership. Let's celebrate Rosalynn's accomplishments and support her in her ongoing endeavors to create a brighter future for all.

Latesha's approach to development is rooted in deep listening and collaboration, fostering resident pride and ownership in their neighborhoods. Her superpowers? Compassion, resilience, intuitiveness, creativity, strength, and multitasking.

As a single mom, she's tirelessly dedicated to nurturing others and helping them live their most authentic lives. Latesha's lifelong passion for servant leadership shines through as she strives to build a better world for her son's generation.

Her bold, passionate style has made waves, breaking down barriers and opening minds in Grand Rapids. She's an unapologetic advocate for real impact and refuses to be deterred by gatekeepers.

Meet the 2023 YOUNG ATHENA Recipient, Evelyn Esparza-Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan! She is FIRE.

Evelyn's journey as an immigrant from Mexico to the US shaped her passion for community service. Overcoming language barriers and cultural adjustments, she became a role model for her children and pursued a career in nonprofit organizations.

At the Hispanic Center, Evelyn provides dignity, respect, and opportunities to improve lives, just as her family received support when they were new immigrants. She takes pride in the Center's pandemic response, bringing vaccines and financial aid to Hispanic communities.

Evelyn believes in the power of inclusive spaces where Latinos, especially women, can thrive. She invests in developing Latina leaders within the Center and advocates for equal pay, ensuring her team can focus on their important work without financial worries.

There's more work to be done, but Evelyn remains committed to meeting community needs and continuing the momentum on compensation analysis and staff development.

Let's celebrate Evelyn's impactful leadership and the Hispanic Center's dedication to empowering the Hispanic community!
