Tom Dade is young. He’s got a fire burning through him that’s hard to control, and it served him incredibly well when he took on one of Australia’s gnarliest races, the Down Under 135, earlier this year. The Victorian left behind a blazing trail so hot, he was this year’s only finisher, crossing that brutal finish line in an astonishing 53:07:53. Tom’s life as a teenager shaped who is today, but it was an outright assault of his mortal being as he battled an eating disorder that saw him land in hospital for treatment. Kate Dzienis discovers the vulnerable side of Tom as he opens up about his demons to spread the message and break the stigma that eating disorders are rare in males.

Hot off the press, this shoe is part of The North Face’s latest line-up, a star studded bunch that was tested at UTMB by top athletes and amateurs alike. I haven’t experienced their shoes until now, but given the brand is synonymous with quality outdoor gear, my expectations are high. I still remember how stoked I was about receiving a TNF jumper hand-me down as a kid…and I’m pretty sure my younger cousin now wears it.

I love a good podcast. I’m always listening to something on my run – yep, I’m one of those people. Hey, I have a young child who reigns supreme over the TV and now my portable speaker – my runs are the only chance I get to consume any kind of content not designed for the under 10s!

An Aussie and a Kiwi smashed the world record in the backyard racing format. West Australian Phil Gore and New Zealander Sam Harvey took to the Australian Backyard Masters start line in country Queensland last June and before they knew it, their names were set in stone as they equalled the record of 101 laps (yards) with Phil then completing one more lap to claim the title of a new world record. Kate Dzienis got a chance to catch up with both endurance athletes, as well as race director Timothy Walsh, to get the lowdown on the day it all happened.

On 14 January, 2024 Donna Urquhart from Melbourne, Victoria crossed the finish line in Antarctica and set a new World Record for the longest run in a polar region, running an average of 50km per day over 28 days to reach 1,402km – a first for a female.

Want to hit a spectacular and challenging trek that will take your breath away and allow you to push yourself in an environment that’s sturdy, hardened and vigorous? Tasmania’s got the Western Arthurs Range, which encapsulates quartzite peaks, hanging valleys and glacier-carved lakes with plenty of rocky climbs, mud and rain. Tasmanian Ben Wilkinson, together with mates Jon Minnebo and Francois Fourie, tackled the inspiring trek earlier this year, and he recaps the adventure which will was full excitement, grandeur, inclement weather, and savoury snacks (but only at the end!).

High level endurance athletes, aka ultra and trail runners, come in all shapes and sizes, and what’s even better is that no matter your background, our community welcomes everyone with open arms to help guide them into a love of the sport. Samantha Turnbull talks to ultra runner Cath Wallis who is breaking the stereotype of what a runner looks like, and who says she hopes to inspire others who may not feel like they have a place in on the trails.

As kids, we learn that ‘movement’ is associated with one of two things – competition or exercise, and we never really good a full understanding about how we can continue to incorporate daily incidental movement into our lives. The North Face athlete Paige Penrose, a trail runner currently studying and racing in cross country and track & field, provides a detailed contribution on the importance of keeping people included in everyday activities because as she writes…‘Unless you’re fortunate to land in a family that incorporates movement without thought into daily life, it quickly becomes dependent on participation in specialised programs that direct you into development pathways and competition structure.’

The Jack(al) Trades - Jackal II

Remember when Marty from Back To The Future II was stoked about his self-tying shoes?

I felt the same when I first unboxed a pair of the Jackal II BOA’s, twisting my fingers to tighten the dials on their new lacing system.

You can catch the full Jackal II shoe review on our website (link in profile) under 'gear'

Game was on like Donkey Kong when testing the Huntaway Foster 01 Trail Shorts, and let’s just reiterate one word – sublime, sublime, sublime.

The NZ brand was designed and created by dedicated trail runners Dr Inia Raumati and Dr Vicki Lim, and these shorts we tested for TRM51 gave us everything we were looking for – pocketage, great length and comfortability.

Water and stain resistant, they’re linerless and are made specifically for trails. You can get yours for NZD$129.00 through huntawayrunco.com and give a shout out.

Our resident columnist Ash Daniels, from our recurring Coach’s Aid Station column, says there are so many amazing things when it comes to trail running – that coming from road to trail is not as overwhelming or frightening as one may think, and if you’ve been umm-ing and ahh-ing about it, it’s time to give it a go!

Here are some pointers to go from road to trail:

🌿 There’s not much chance of getting lost in a trail race because they are so well marked and flagged, and there will always be a tail runner or tail walker to ensure no one gets left behind.
🌿 Power hiking is a valid tactic to keep the legs fresher.
🌿 Whilst practice makes perfect, there are plenty of alternatives if you can’t train on trails but want to race on them.
🌿 Being proficient at trails means you are more likely to hit faster paces on the flat.
🌿 Following basic rules will ensure a safe trail day out.
🌿 You don’t need expensive, specialised gear to start trail running.
🌿 The community is INSANELY supportive and encouraging – you’ll make so many new friends.

If you haven’t yet come to the dark side, what’s stopping you?!

Have you been to your local GP recently and had a health check done? Are you of a certain age and done your recommended tests?

Run The Train To Ease The Pain is a feature in the current edition of TRM about three blokes who ran the length of the Picton to Northcliffe railway line in south west WA in a bid to remind people to get their health checks done, in memory of a running mate.

So, now that winter is in full swing, warm up with a cuppa after your training, then make that appointment for your health check – that’s all Felix, Simon and Nick are asking for.

👟 The Nnormal Kjerag trail shoes are for runners who want maximum performance on technical trails – from beginners to the elite.

Trail runner Alexis Oosterhoff took these babies out for some decent kilometres to test them and see if their reputation held up – 6mm heel to toe drop, 23.5mm stack height and all.

Check out Alexis’ full review in TRM51, available now online and at all great retail outlets!

According to 2022 statistics from The Australian Sports Commission, only 32% of girls aged 15+ play sport at least once per week.

Those are some upsetting figures...

We can encourage a change though. Now is the time to empower the next generation of female athletes to develop a love of sport and experience the important health and education benefits throughout life. Melbourne runner Donna Urquhart is doing just that - revealing in TRM51 how she set a new World Record in Antarctica earlier this year, and her biggest answer to 'why'.
