In case you missed it, check out my feature length documentary on Miami Vice, one of the biggest influences to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. And its inspiration can already be seen in Grand Theft Auto VI.
What do Grand Theft Auto, Ferraris, designer stubble, outrun, synthwave, retrowave, and the ‘80s renaissance have in common? Two words: Miami Vice. This styl...

Quick little aside, as I was playing and researching for the Miami Vice doc, I found this old X-Play review of the 2006 Miami Vice movie tie-in game with Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb.
He's pretty scathing in it, so I decided to make a short video on it.
Here's some original content for this channel: a quick look at something I dug up from the ye olde days of G4TV: a mean-spirited review of the Miami Vice mov...
I fell in love with the story and games of Quintet—who played underdog to studios like Squaresoft, who were the minds behind classics like ActRaiser, Illusion of Gaia & Terranigma, but also games so obscure I had to blindly play them in Japanese.
After watching this complete documentary, I hope you will too.
(Re-uploaded to correct errors created in rendering)Quintet was an underdog video game developer, formed by the Nihon Falcom veterans behind the Ys series, s...

Today on January 28, 1998, Final Fantasy Tactics dropped for North America.
Director Yasumi Matsuno brought his unique style of strategy RPG to the Final Fantasy series to universal acclaim. Its versatile job system and vibrant world of Ivalice was echoed in Final Fantasy XII.
Not too long ago, Terranigma turned 25!
On December 19, 1996 the now legendary SNES action RPG released in PAL regions. To date, it has never been officially released digitally, or in the Americas—becoming one of the best examples of why we need emulation and game preservation.
18 years ago today, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II released
Its console-focused, action RPG gameplay pioneered by the 2001 original was only warmly received the second time around. RPGs advanced a lot in the 3 years between the games.
We still need that 4K remaster, though!
6 years ago today, the singular permadeath RPG/town sim, Darkest Dungeon, plunging our brave cast of heroes into the horrors of Lovecraftian madness.

It's crazy to me that in 1974, the same year Dungeons & Dragons was published, people hijacked university instructional systems like PLATO to build RPGs.
One such example was "Dnd", an obvious homage to the tabletop game. I always thought CRPGs were invented much later.
There's something classy and timeless about the style, color palette and graphics capability of the Commodore Amiga.
What is this aesthetic? 𝘈𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘷𝘦?
Today, on Jan 14 2004, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel released.
Intended as a realtime action-RPG appeal to console players, its tone was wacky, had co-op, but was NOT a Fallout game.
That doesn't mean it wasn't a ton of fun to stream a few years ago...

Seventeen years ago today, on Jan 11, 2005, Resident Evil 4 released for the GameCube.
RE4 rebooted the franchise into real-time 3D worlds with full camera movement. It's been ported 11+ times since. It also marked the first time that America got the game BEFORE Japan did!
More cyberpunk bonus content! I've received a few requests for it, so I put together a "CYBERPUNK WATCHLIST" of 100, five-star rated, sortable mini-reviews of cyberpunk movies on Letterboxd. This serves as a good primer for cyberpunk in cinema. Enjoy!

Fun fact!
The PC release of Halo 2 in 2004 was delayed because of a costly prank hidden in the source code (the infamous .ASS error), a photo of one developer mooning Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer behind his back.

Today, on December 6th, 1982, the nuke-like cataclysm in the AKIRA timeline occurred.
