Today we meet Justin Fitzgerald

◾ Artists or producers that inspire you - musical or non ?

I have a Jazz background, so anyone from around that era of Miles Davis Thelonius Monk, Bill Evans in particular. Also watching Christian Henson online and how quickly he can pull things together.

◾ What inspired you to start writing music - moment/concert/album?

Originally it was listening to great 80s rock, bashing away on the guitar and singing, but I can’t sing and my guitar is just ok, so it again came back to piano and writing jazz, but it really became a thing in the 90s when my brother in law introduced me to Cakewalk, back when you they still gave you a manual to work out how to do everything !

◾ Guilty musical pleasure ?

Country - Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Miranda Lambert that kind of thing.

◾ Favourite instrument ?

Piano, Mucking around on guitar in open tunings.

◾ It's Sunday morning, what's on the stereo ?

Jamoa Jam - Samoana Soul, I used to work with a guy called Spider who used to place this tape (yes that long ago)in the work car. Found it on Spotify the other day, still makes me smile – Pele Moni is still my favourite.

Today we have producer/artist all round good guy Stuart McNair.

Artists or producers that inspire you - musical or non?

The list is too long for this format but here goes: Bonobo, Grizzly Bear, Aphex Twin, Kevin Parker, Disclosure, Jamie XX, Joy Orbison, Mark Ronson.

What inspired you to start writing music - moment/concert/album?

I've always had a connection to music throughout my life. As a child I was fortunate to have musical training in piano, saxophone and guitar before committing to drums which I studied while I messed around with dials and electronic music at the Queensland University of Technology. Frequenting festivals I had somewhat of an out of body experience watching the band Grizzly bear perform an immaculate alternative jazz infused set at Sunset Sounds in 2010. So to, while side of stage, watching Nick Cave and the bad seeds performing at All Tomorrow's Parties. These are just two moments I distinctly remember opening my mind to the possibilities and power of music.

Guilty musical pleasure ?

Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles, I have no shame in giving props to a great pop song when I hear one.

Favourite instrument ?

I will always love the drums and use my deep knowledge of rhythm in my compositions, however there is something magical about an upright piano or chordal instrument. All my best ideas have stemmed from tinkering on a piano.

Roland TR 909 or Roland TR 808 - and why?

As a lover of dance music I can not go past the 808, however I love the versatility of 909 drums, they are great for layering under acoustic samples too.

It's Sunday morning, what's on the stereo?

My perfect Sunday morning consists of some kind of Neo Soul number from Jitwam, Indie stylings of Jungle or sometimes I like to transport myself to the days of Aretha Franklin and Roy Ayers.

Artists or producers that inspire you - musical or non?

These are some of my musical favourites: The Beatles, Mark Ronson, Childish Gambino, Matt Corby, Magic City Hippies, Black Keys.

Non musical: I actually love learning about cooking and find it really cathartic, as well as reading.

What inspired you to start writing music - moment/concert/album?

I've always loved music from a young age, although I didn't start playing guitar until I was 13.
The first record I ever bought, which really hooked me, was "The Young and the Hopeless" by Good Charlotte.
A high school band covered one of their songs at a school fair I attended, and I thought that was the best thing ever.
Even when I was like 8 years old, I made drum sets out of my books and pencils.

Guilty musical pleasure?

Heavy Metal. Particularly the aussie band "Northlane"

Favourite instrument?

This is a tough one! Has to be a tie with guitar and drums.

RolandTR 909 or RolandTR 808 - and why?

808's all the way. I didn't come from a hip hop or urban music background and grew into it over time.
808's have this funny way of being retro and also super modern at the same time. It's like a timeless sound.
It's influence on pop music has been unlike anything else in my opinion.

It's Sunday morning, what's on the stereo?

Probably one of the aforementioned, or some Spotify playlists I like (Kitchen Swagger is great). If not, then it's likely to be The Wiggles or kids music. Haha.

WHAT ARTISTS INSPIRE YOU - MUSICAL OR NON ?

Such a broad mix! Quincy Jones, Hanz Zimmer, Randy Newman, Jack Stratton, Questlove.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START WRITING MUSIC?

As a substitute teacher I found myself teaching a class where students were designing video games. I thought one student's game had so much potential but it didn't have any music! I jumped on GarageBand....and right there was my 'moment'.

GUILTY MUSICAL PLEASURE ?

Haha I love this question. Probably Jacob Collier. Super crazy weird music I don't fully understand. Also Jeff Buckley - Grace. Sometimes I put on James Brown and pretend I'm in his band, you're not allowed to make a mistake because he'll cut your pay!

FAVOURITE INSTRUMENT ? - Drums and percussion

Roland TR 909 OR Roland TR 808 - AND WHY ?

909 thanks to M83 and an 808 clap thanks to one billion pop songs.
