Intimidated with long-term food storage?

You aren't alone. It is a skill that our great-grandparents knew well but has been lost in the last few generations.

If 2020 taught us nothing else, we learned how much we have placed our dependence on grocery stores and big agri-business. It didn't even take a transportation disruption to clear the shelves! Not a wise position to place ourselves in, right?!

But food storage doesn't have to be intimidating or sink your monthly budget. And unlike what you may have heard, food security doesn't need to involve spending a bunch of money on food that you'll never eat!

We almost lost our garden!

Fungus gnats nearly wiped out all of our garden starts this year!

It all started with us being in a hurry and buying potting soil (rather than making our own as we usually do). That spendy organic potting soil turned out to be infested with the little gremlins, and sadly we didn't jump on the issue until they were out of hand.

Normally, diatomaceous earth does a pretty good job if you catch it early, but we were beyond that point and nothing seemed to help. Neem oil, hydrogen peroxide, insecticidal soap...nope.

Then I remembered something we had tried years ago when nothing else worked. And wow, did it work! Fungus gnats gone within a couple days. Amazing!

It was...drumroll...sand!
