What is trending in the kitchen?

Your kitchen may be old and tired. You want a new look and you're not sure how to go about the change. You know that updating a kitchen can be costly. In fact, a new kitchen can cost as much as a new car. No, you cannot drive it around and show it off, but it will not lose it's value like a new vehicle can. Get in the mindset that this is an investment. An investment is suppose to grow in value, right? And, you can actually enjoy this investment, while living in your home.

In most housing markets the kitchen is valued from 10%-15% of the value of the home. If your home is valued at $250,000 you can easily invest $25,000 to $37,500 into your kitchen and still get that back with the sell of your home. If you are planning to sell your home within the next five years do some online research of the homes of similar size and style in your area to see what you need to update that home buyers will be looking for. Such as, do the homes in your area show quartz countertops? Do the homes have tile or wood flooring? What style and color are the cabinets? Even look at the hardware on the doors and drawers. Remember to update your light fixtures, as well.

If you are wanting to change the footprint of your kitchen, you will need to sit down with a trusted general contractor. Usually, this will require a complete tear out of your kitchen. Also, take the time to educate yourself on the quality of the many different cabinet makers out in the market. Yes, you want a nice look, but you probably prefer a plywood box over one made of particle board. Ask yourself do I want soft close hinges? Do I want full extension soft close drawers? Oh, can I get the pull out spice rack, or that slide out trash bin? There are a lot of options available. When designing a kitchen keep a folder of photos of everything you would like to have in your kitchen and share it with your contractor.

What should you choose first? Well, it's like picking out that beautiful ensemble of clothing for a special event. Start with the dress. These are your cabinets. Then, choose the shoes. This would be your floor. Next, would be your accessories, countertop and backsplash. After all of this, the rest of the details will just fall into place.
