Ghana after the Supreme Court ruling
By John Vianney
Since the inception of the fourth republican constitution in 1992, Ghana has witnessed six successive elections, with political power trekking between the two main parties, the National Democratic Party (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). As for the other parties, the least said about them the better. Their abysmal performance in all the elections should be enough for them to fold up and join the two leading parties. But the existence of each of them smacks of a striving democracy in the country. They are so insignificant and virtually not noticed except when an election goes into a runoff. Sometimes their presence seems to water down the politically charged temperature of the nation as a result of the two main rivals. This brings to mind the late Dan Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party. The GCPP leader and his party became a household name for championing the need todomesticate everything in the country. The party got ‘domesticated’ after the demise of its comical leader. May his soul rest in peace! By the way where is Akua Donkor of the Great Freedom Party? In fact the 2012 general elections will remain unprecedented in our history books.

Before, during and after every election are series of complains, allegations and boycotts. But the recent petition by the NPP at the highest court of the land for an annulment of the 2012 presidential elections as declared by the Electoral Commissioner, Dr Afari Gyan is of great interest to Ghanaians as well as the international community. Usually after an election, one individual that is castigated most is the Electoral Commissioner for going to bed with the party that wins making him the greatest political pr******te in the country. Dr Afari Gyan has headed Ghana’s Electoral Commission for well over twenty years and has superintended over all the six general elections in the country. He has been called upon by a number of African countries due to his expertise in elections. Unfortunately, his expertise came under serious questioning after the recent elections under his supervision in his own country. I dare say it has been a blunder from my layman’s point of view of the system that was used for the elections. But that is not mine to decide. The Supreme Court will do that in a couple weeks from now. Ghana awaits this unprecedented ruling to move on.

However, I feel very proud as a Ghanaian that notwithstanding the magnitude of the petitioners case, as well as the sheer closeness of the figures; John Mahamah of the NDC 5,574,761 and Nana Akufo-Addo 5,248,898 of the NPP (representing 50.70% and 47.74% respectively), yet the NPP opted for the law courts for rectification of the declared results of the presidential elections as per their findings. Other African countries are still counting their losses as a result of similar electoral disputes that were handled without recourse to the law courts. Suffice it to state Cote d’Ivoire and Kenya. In fact, in my opinion, the leader of the NPP Nana Akufo-Addo, would have brought the entire nation to its knees if he had decided anything different from going to the courts. No matter the ruling, Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamudu Baumia his running mate and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, the chairman of the NPP deserve national honours. This decision of theirs was/is in the interest of the nation. This for me is a turning point in our body politics. The continent is bedevilled with too many electoral related disputes leading to conflicts and in some cases civil wars. What a lesson for others to emulate henceforth!

Like most Ghanaians in the diaspora, I have followed the election petition mostly via the radio broadcast (audio on demand) and commentaries from the social media. Though I have my interest, I am very sure the Supreme Court ruling could go in favour of either of the parties (NDC or NPP). The ruling could also go against both parties, and this could lead to a re-run of the presidential elections. In any case, what matters now is that justice is done in this case. That is not to say when justice done there will be no pain, disappointment or hurt. But for the sake of generations to come, the nation must be seen to have chartered the right path as a result of the Supreme Court ruling.

In the event that the Supreme Court rules in favour of the NDC, the NPP must get back to their drawing board to review and plan for the 2016 general elections. They should also work on all the perceptions out there about the party being an Akan party and consider seriously Dr Mahamudu Baumia as their candidate in future elections. Going for Alan Kyeremanteng for me will only perpetuate the long held perception of the party being Akan party and my Northern brothers only fit to be running mates after which they are damned. Nana Akuffo Addo’s point of exit should not see Alan Kyeremanteng but a unifier such as Dr Mahamudu Baumia. This could be the best time for the leadership of NPP to take on board the voice of the minority amongst them as well as erase all the perceptions and face the realities. The NPP must also eschew complacency at all times for it is never over until it is over.

The Supreme Court could also rule in favour of the NPP. This means power would have to change hands. The NDC now in office must handover power without dislodging any state institution for any other reason. There should be no compromises and the military must not be motivated in any way to do anything untoward. Former President John Mahamah (as he would be called) should equally go into serious crisis management of the situation for the sake of the party. The party has witnessed lots of challenges before the 2013 elections including the unfortunate demise of the former President Professor J. E. A. Mills. May his soul rest in perfect peace though. The NDC challenges seem to be unending. The latest being the financial scandal at the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Development Authority (GYEEDA). Many will be those who will like to betray government and the party for their personal gains as well as ‘unnecessary’ favour from the NPP government. The party should as a matter of urgency strike a deal with all who were left out along the way except this writer as well as those who were rejected and unnecessarily hounded out of the party. Maybe this could be the moment for the party leadership to consider the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Dr Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings. It will be tough for the NDC to survive the tide, but possible.

Meanwhile, in the event that the ruling goes for a re-run of the elections, the country must be ready to face it as it comes with huge financial as well as logistical challenges at a time that the country can barely pay contractors as well as salaries of public and civil servants.

Democracy is expensive and Ghanaians must understand that. The international community must be forthcoming in this regard since it will be cheaper than coming in during a civil war. A re-run of the presidential elections could be the fairest ruling but again that is not mine to decide. The Supreme Court judges know the law better.

To call for electoral reforms will be an understatement. The Electoral Commission as an institution must be transformed by taking into account all loopholes that have been raised by all parties in this election petition. All views of the political parties must be submitted to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) for consideration. Vital decisions such as ‘no verification no vote ‘must be done in ample time for all parties to appreciate the system and educate their followings accordingly. The use of half baked literates as electoral officers must no longer be countenanced.

The fundamental observation after the Supreme Court ruling should be one of a maturing democracy in Ghana. Both NPP and NDC would have learned enough lessons for the growth of democracy in our part of the world. The Ghanaian voter would have been more conscious of the electoral system as well as our judicial system. One painful fact though will be to accept the Supreme Court ruling no matter which way it goes for us to go on as one nation, one people with a common destiny. Before then, the Supreme Court I am sure will ensure that justice is done in this case. We must remain the beacon of hope for the continent. Long live Ghana.

ITALY'S FIRST BLACK MINISTER
CĂ©cile Kyenge, born 28 August 1964 in Kambove, Democratic Republic of the Congo is the first black government minister in Italy.

CĂ©cile Kyenge (48) who arrived Italy in 1983 and was elected to Parliament last February on the Democratic Party ticket was appointed by Italy’s new Prime Minister Enrico Letta as Minister of Integration.

For years, Ms. Kyenge has been fighting for rights of immigrants in Italy as one of the officials of her party’s Immigration Forum.

Ms. Kyenge said she will focus Parliament’s attention on the values they have been sharing at the Democratic Party’s Immigration Forum.

The former Provincial Councillor in Modena is a committed fighter for the full political participation of all and citizenship rights. She also strongly believes the Bossi-Fini Immigration Law must be abolished and a new just and fair immigration law approved.

She believes that Italy needs to guarantee fundamental rights to all, including immigrants.

Ms. Kyenge has in the past warned that depriving part of the society of their rights would take the entire society backwards, and eventually lead to a society where nobody’s rights are guaranteed
She proposes a law that would give citizenship to the children of immigrants born on Italian soil. Under the current legislation, Italian nationality is passed on by blood, meaning the grandchildren of an Italian who has never set foot in the country has more rights to citizenship than someone born in Italy to foreign parents.

There are almost a million minor children of immigrants, out of which more than 570,000 were born in Italy and more than 600,000 go to Italian schools.

The social security contributions of immigrant workers amount to 8 billion euros while they pay taxes amounting to 4 billion euros.

Kyenge said new citizens should have the right to fully participate in the society’s affairs and be granted the right to vote in local elections.

If nothing else, her April 27 appointment as Minister for Integration has kicked off a much-needed discussion on race and immigration in a country that still struggles to come to terms with its rapid transformation.
Not surprising, her appointed has generated very hostile reactions from many, including fellow politicians with voices opposing her proposal on citizenship.

Matteo Salvini, secretary of the Northern League in Lombardy said the League was ready to mount "total opposition" to her in parliament.
Kyenge is one of two naturalised Italians in the government, both elected for the centre-left Democratic Party (PD). The other is a former international canoeist, Josefa Idem. However, the inclusion in the cabinet of blonde, German-born Idem, who won an Olympic gold medal and five world championships for Italy, caused no similar controversy.
AC Milan and Italy striker, Mario Balotelli, called her appointment "a further, big step towards a more civilised and responsible Italian society".
The Washington Post also referred to her appointment as “a giant step forward for racial integration in a country that has long been ill at ease with its growing immigrant classes”.
Kyenge is at the forefront of a growing demographic shift in Italy. As recently as 1991, just 1 in 100 residents held a foreign passport. Today, it’s 1 out of every 12.
Her appointment gives cause for hope that things will get better for Italy’s immigrant population.
Kyenge studied medicine in Rome, before obtaining a position in a hospital in Modena as eye surgeon. She married engineer Domenico, a native Italian in 1994 after he underwent eye surgery in her department. They have two teenage daughters named Giulia and Maisha.
One thing is certain, the appointment of CĂ©cile Kyenge Kashetu as Italy’s Minister of Integration will stay in the record books as the most important historical fact and Prime Minister Enrico Letta has also entered into history. Future generations will recognize it.

From the West coast of the African Continent, that country called Ghana, resides a proud son of the land whose passion and talent in music is close to an equal to none situation.

From a music oriented genealogy, he is the grandson of hi life mogul Kwabena Akwaboah and son of the legendary Kwadwo Akwaboah, a Songwriter, Keyboardist and Music Icon formerly with the ever famous Mariots International Band.

That is the man AKWABOAH. He first announced his musical trademark to the world in 2009 when he wrote Daa Ke Daa for Becca and Ayeyi Ndwom for DSP Kofi Sarpong .Both songs won their respective artiste awards at the 2010 Ghana Music Awards with Akwaboah subsequently being adjudged the Song Writer For the year 2010 for Daa Ke Daa.

Again in 2012, Akwaboah pulled another magic in writing Best in Me for Efya which kept her musical career going through out last year. This will surely win her an award at this year’s music awards.

Akwaboah after years of perfecting his musical art launched his music career last year with the release of his first official single, I Do Love You which is currently enjoying loads of airplay across the country and on other international platforms. This song brings the late eighty’s born Akwaboah out as a great Songwriter and Composer of our time and a magnificent singer whose talent knows no boundaries.

One can easily wonder what took him so long in letting the world know about his talent. With just a song out in the public domain, Akwaboah has carved a niche for himself with his fan base growing from strength to strength as the days go by.

His fans keeps yearning for more which prompted him to release a bonus track titled Mesan Agye Wo as an addition to his first single. He is set to release his next single which features Okyeame Kwame soon.

Some few weeks after the release of “I Do Love You”, Akwaboah has already been tagged as the “ladies man” by his fellow GH artistes and some personalities in the media. His personality, composure, attitude, voice, his choice of words and his kind of music as well as other qualities makes him win the heart of many young and affluent ladies in the country. May be, the doubting minds should get to listen to his two songs which are officially out in the public domain.

Born Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah, the gentleman is just synonymous to music. Not only does he sing and write music close to perfection, his fingers are blessed with the power of controlling the black and white musical instrument to the core. He is a master keyboardist and has played for several local and international artiste including Hugh Masakela and John Legend.

Police investigates Nana Ama McBrown's near fatal accident
The Tesano Police say they are investigating circumstances that led to a near fatal accident involving actress Nana Ama McBrown Wednesday.
The actress' vehicle, with registration number DV 84608-13, in which she was traveling got involved in an accident on the Lapaz end of the N1 Highway while she was returning from a movie shoot with her boyfriend, Maxwell Mensah.
DSP Ernest Acheampong, the Tesano Divisional MTTU Commander, told Joy News conflicting accounts of the incident by the persons involved have prompted further investigations to ascertain the true cause of the accident.
Sources however told Joy News that the actress, her boyfriend and the driver of an Opel Vectra, with registration number GR 9224 R, which was also involved in the accident maybe charged with careless driving and disregard for traffic regulations.
Meanwhile publicist for the actress, Eugene Osafo Nkansah told Joy News, Nana Ama McBrown, who is currently on admission at the Yaa Asantewa Ward (F2) of the 37 Military Hospital is recuperating.
According to him, “Nana Ama is very well, she is strong.”
He said she has a P.O.P on her right arm “which means that she has a bone dislocation,” in that arm.
The actress, he noted, was grateful to God for saving her life and thanked Ghanaians for their support and concern. She called on them to pray for her.
Eugene debunked reports from the family of the actress that she was in the company of three or four persons when the accident occurred. He stated that Nana Ama McBrown was with only her boyfriend, Maxwell when the accident occurred.
He added that the boyfriend of the actress was discharged Wednesday and reported to the hospital Thursday for a medical checkup.

Sway releases Still Sway with Kano
‘Sway has proved himself to be the UK’s wittiest MC’ – Guardian ‘The wit and wisdom of Sway’s lyrics set him apart from other rappers’ – The Times ‘Sway is the purest specimen of Punk spirit in the UK today’ – NME ‘Sway is the future of Hip Hop’ – Chuck D
Previous Mercury Prize nominee, MOBO and BET Award winner Sway has teamed up with seminal rapper Kano on his most recent offering ‘Still Sway & Kane’. His highly anticipated forthcoming album ‘The Deliverance’ is set to be released this year following the success of his previous singles ‘Still Speedin’ and ‘Level Up’, which charted in the top-20 and top-10 respectively. Reuniting two of the most respected wordsmiths in the UK after they joined forces on the ‘Still Speedin’’ remix, ‘Still Sway & Kane’ is co-produced by Sway alongside Giorgio Tuinfort (David Guetta, Akon) and Fuller Refix. The track also features and introduces Tigger Da Author, a singer-songwriter recently signed to Sway‘s Dcypha Productions label. Inspired by Sway’s favourite producer and rap legend, Dr Dre, ‘Still Sway & Kane’ samples the hip-hop classic ‘Still D.R.E’. After a chance meeting with Dre himself in London, Sway took it as a sign to complete the demo and release it as a promotional single, delivering an undeniably fresh and hard-hitting UK take on one of the most recognised songs in rap history.
Few UK artists can boast of being a genuine game changer, with a musical supremacy that comes from never resorting to anything less than brilliance. This summarises North London based Derek Safo aka Sway. Acclaimed for his complex lyrical style and witty social commentary and wordplay, Sway has been praised by everyone from The Times, NME and Radio 1 through to Lupe Fiasco & Ian Brown. Not only is he renowned for setting the bar for clever and authentic musical artistry, but he is also widely respected for his business acumen as a previously independently funded and released artist.

To date Sway has released two consecutive benchmark UK rap albums ‘This is My Demo’ & ‘The Signature LP’, seven influential mix tapes, sold out shows across Europe, US and Africa and notched up collaborations with an impressive list of artists (e.g. Akon, Kaiser Chiefs, Madness and Childish Gambino). It’s no wonder Sway is continually cited by critics and media alike as playing a key role in the shaping of the UK Hip-Hop and Urban scene, much as fellow MOBO award winner Kano. Both are very much credited with helping set the blueprint that paved the way for breakthrough artists such as Tinchy Stryder, Wretch 32 and Tinie Tempah. Kano also saw off an incredible 2012 where he was the face of the hugely successful Mercedes A Class commercial in addition to filming the much talked about second series of channel 4 show Top Boy.
Sway’s ‘Still Sway & Kane’ featuring Kano and Tigger will be released by 3 Beat/All Around The World Records on ###, with album ‘The Deliverance set to follow in Spring 2013.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor returned home Thursday from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, where he chaired the Ninth Summit of the Leon Sullivan Foundation attended by about 400 delegates from Africa and people of African descent in the diaspora.

The four-day meeting was held under the theme, 'Africa Rising."

A release signed by Frank Agyekum, spokesperson and special aide to Former President Kufuor, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said Equatorial Guinean President Obiang Nguema Mbasago, opened the Summit attended by President Yayi Boni of Benin and Chairman of the African Union, President Ernest Bailey Koromah of Sierra Leone, General Olusegun Obasanjo, Former President of Nigeria, and Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Executive Secretary of the African- Caribbean - Pacific Organization, among other dignatories.

Former President Kufuor who is a member of the Board of Governors of the Foundation, said Africa could only claim the 21st century if it built the capacity of its people to enable them to exploit the immense resources on the continent to their advantage and compete successfully on the global market.

"In this regard, the undoubted expertise and know-how of our brothers and sisters in the diaspora will be of much help. The passion you have shown and your commitment to the motherland in your speeches and personal interactions have been amazing.

"I urge you to let this translate into practical ways by which those of us you are already uniting with can benefit from what you have gained," Former President said.

He asked African governments to trumpet their achievements in order to help dispel the negativity portrayed about them internationally.
