The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love - whether we call it friendship or family or romance - is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other’s light.” James Baldwin, Nothing Personal

Consider how love is represented, preserved and remembered through an archive of photobooks, novels and non-fiction works in Meditations on Love.

This special reading room is curated by Develop, a collective of six young people who have been commissioned to curate the show by The Photographers’ Gallery.

Designed as a welcoming reading room, everyone is invited to explore the plethora of books and reflect on the common thread that runs through stories of resilience, community, friendship, subversion, identity and q***rness.

Presenting the many languages of love through a global lens, photobooks from Tami Aftab, Ollie Adegboye, Deana Lawson, Ewen Spencer, and many others explore love’s complex and varying iterations: tender, provocative, q***r, defiant and sacrificial.

Together, this series of eclectic narratives attempts to articulate love’s capacity to endure amidst adversity, and its revolutionary power to resist.

Born in Siberia, Slava Mogutin is a Russian-American multimedia artist, author and activist exiled from Russia for his outspoken q***r writing and activism. A third-generation writer and self-taught photographer, he became the first Russian to be granted political asylum in the US on the grounds of homophobic persecution. Informed by his bicultural dissident and refugee experience, Mogutin’s work examines the notions of
displacement and identity, pride and shame, devotion and disaffection, love and hate.

Crap zine is a q***r zine exploring fe**shisation of garments thematically linked through colour. It’s a platform for community and collaboration. A space for interdisciplinary creatives to explore ideas through a q***r lens. It’s as serious as it is playful.

PARC is the collaborative output by Paul and Anthony Rawson-Campbell that is as much about the experience, energy and creative process as the imagery, artefacts and garments they create. Their work investigates and questions masculinity, gay culture, fe**sh and champions diverse and varied voices alongside their own.

DANCE OF THE CLONES TAKEOVER
“A Stephan Mistler (1985) shot for the Do You Get It Graphics greeting card company, a company started by C**t Thomas and myself. Stephan was an amazingly sweet man. We did many shoots for many magazines together. He was the star of a bartender shoot for Hondo magazine which became the singular most popular issue of Honcho. Shooting for those magazines was good money back then... sigh.” - Jim Wigler, interviewed for Advocate 2019
