What does leading a creative life mean to you?

More than 60% of us thinks it’s having control over our own time.

It’s not surprising, since being inspired and creative is not tied to 9 to 5, nor a desk. Sometimes we’re out and about, visiting and talking with others, reading and researching, gathering resources and making.

We may not appear to be working all the time, but our mind is. Having control over our time is crucial to the design of our schedule and endeavours.

How do you envision having more control over how your time is spent on work?

We’ve gathered some ideas around adding rests, creative and admin days to your schedule:

- Planning your day around 1-2 projects
- Blocking off long periods of time to stay focused on one project
- Schedule your work when your energy and motivation is highest

We’re in our line of work because we love it. Period.

But it doesn’t stop us from comparing ourselves with others.

We go to each other’s show, celebrate one another’s achievements yet 80% of us surveyed inevitably find it difficult to avoid comparing ourselves with others.

How can we check in and uplift each other? Who can you check in with and uplift today?

Yuki is an Actor and Digital Creator who, alongside Ammar Ameezy, a Dancer, Choreographer and Filmmaker, translated and recorded the Self-Compassion Audio guide in Singapore Sign Language.
ID 4: Text reads: “In our workshops, we talked about the kind of industry we wanted to see, the kind of work we wanted to do, and these conversations filtered into the final exhibition. The Self-Compassion Lab is an industry-focused exhibition around the growing conversation of work cultures grounded in care. Taking place between 2 November to 4 December 2022, the inaugural edition zooms in on the creative industry, featuring stories from young creatives, a self-compassion audio guide, resource book table and dedicated fringe events.

Powered by National Youth Council, The Self Compassion Lab is part of Somerfest, an initiative of the Realise Your Somerset Project aiming to enrich the Somerset Belt.

06/10/2022

The team spent the past year studying self-compassion, asking ourselves why it’s important to our time & place, and why we are even drawn to it?

We’ve been through a whole lotta stuff like graduating from school into a pandemic, struggle with environmental responsibility, crossed countries in search of meaningful work - and in all this, discovered that without compassion and mutual support for any one of these moments in our lives, we wouldn’t have gotten through it. On a personal journey, we’ve had to unlearn how we “talk to ourselves” and pick up new mind habits to step into the best version of ourselves today. This ongoing process is… mind boggling.

Leading up to our first exhibition ever, we want to offer ways of seeing and help each other to spot life’s “mind blockers” to being kinder to oneself in this era. The first of such mind blocks is: PERFECTIONISM.

We’re not strangers to perfection.

We’re not strangers to the imperfect pieces of our lives either. Things do fail, but where does criticism for ourselves start and end?

Our Lead Facilitator shared this quote during our first session with the Youth Advisory Board for The Self-Compassion Lab: “Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It’s the pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough.” - from Julia Cameron’s The Artist's Way.

Can there be productive perfectionism? What’s the fine line between perfection and excellence?

ID: illustration with a quote, the text reads on Perfectionism, "Perfectionism is not a quest for the best. It’s the pursuit of the worst in ourselves, the part that tells us that nothing we do will ever be good enough." from the Book ``The Artist Way" by Julia Cameron. Above the quote, there is an illustration of a small person with a peaceful smile on their face and rosy pink cheeks, arms on their chest, as if giving themselves compassion. Text above the illustration reads "The Self-Compassion Lab". An illustration of a pen on the left top corner and an illustration of a sand timer on the bottom right hand corner.

What if you could see with your ears? 👂🏼👂🏼

The team at 55 Minutes asked ourselves this question last year.
We decided to explore UX design, which is usually visual led, through one of our other senses — hearing!

Introducing "Can You Hear Us?", a series of podcasts exploring how voice UX and sound impact our daily lives from our fitness routines to leisure activities.

What can you gain when you strip away sight for sound? Come along on this experimental journal with us, and listen for yourselves. The first episode will be available next week! So watch this space!
