The Spectacle We're a little cracked, and we like it that way. Louis. We publish fiction, nonfiction, poetry, reviews, and visual art.

The Spectacle is an online literary magazine run by graduate students and faculty at Washington University in St. We like scholars who write great poetry, poets who write incisive monographs, credulous skeptics, wary believers, hidebound experimentalists, radical realists, mystical engineers, analytical mystics, catholic snobs, and modish antiquarians. We have a soft spot for keen amateurs and sin

cere dilettantes. In short, we’re searching for a variety of disturbances, as long as they arrive on time and with style.

The R***e is currently open for submissions. We are looking for "Encounter Fiction." Talk about what you did while Ken Burn's 1994 documentary "Baseball" was on. Encounter your childhood bedroom, an InkJoy Ballpoint Stylo-Billie pen (the purple one), or your ex-partner's parrot. Encounter all three in rapid succession. Encounter a chair in reality or in a dream. Anything goes, as long as your encounter sings. Keep it under 300 words.

Our Story

We aim for content that reminds us that our lenses matter—they focus, distort, clarify, conceal. We value and emphasize relationships between the literary and visual arts, pairing the majority of the pieces we publish with original work from a variety of contributing visual artists.

Based out of the English, Creative Writing, and Visual Art departments at Washington University in St. Louis, The Spectacle is committed to publishing work from under-represented voices, including people of color, women, people from LGBTQIA+ communities, and people who have disabilities.
