WXRT Is Not A Rock Station - It is Corporate Brainwashing New description - XRT = Xtremely Repetitive Torture! Here is a place to commiserate on how bad the station is.

22/06/2024

I have been receiving comments from another FB site - WXRT Listeners complaining about the music, the playlist, and the poor attitude the station has for the listeners. I have not answered as Author of this site, but I did tell them it is here.
Maybe, just maybe the previously hypothesized are starting to wake up? Let’s hope, and get a real, small local station that will play a song once a week instead of constantly… 😡😡😡

I just got this email from the Station. I had forgotten the original ad campaign, but selling these should be illegal…
“Think for yourself… except for accepting the same songs on constant replay and the occasional boring new artist that we will try and convince you is actually good…” 😡
The lemmings will eat it up… 😡😡😡

08/01/2024

Audacy - owner of WXRT, the Score and others just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The stations are to continue operating through the process.
Not gloating, just reporting… 😳

18/12/2023

I don’t know if any of you get the XRT email messages, but this morning, I got one titled “A Note from Mt. Joy,” I’m sure Sominex is now a sponsor… 😴💤

12/12/2023

They’re still boring as hell. The Christmas concerts are a mixed bag: Los Lobos is unbelievable; Mt. Joy is boring… 😴💤

17/08/2023

I was in the car a few minutes ago and the station played “Who Can It Be Now” by Men at Work. Of all of the bands and songs that could have been played, they trotted out this WDRV disaster.
The station is doomed. 😡😡😡😡😡

09/07/2023

I should have remembered when I posted about the Runaways that it the 70’s day. They would never have played it otherwise. Yesterday, I was driving and the station played “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” by Dead or Alive. I enjoyed hearing it, but it always ends up making me sad or mad that this is the way the station should be, but for the suits, local management, and the conventional wisdom keeps heads up their respective asses, steadfastly refusing to break free from boredom… 😡😡😡😡😡

07/07/2023

The station surprised me today. They played “Cherry Bomb” by the Runaways. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that on the station before, and it’s another reminder of what the station could be… 😢

22/04/2023

Then they played Aerosmith (gag), then back to WXRT stalwarts INXS. 💤💤💤

22/04/2023

They played Bourgeois Tagg this morning on SMF. Oh, what WXRT could be… ❤️

14/04/2023

I know it sounds like I am overwrought in my criticism of Chicago rock radio, but I was out this morning and at around 7:30, WXRT played “Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog. I got gas as the song was ending. I filled up, got back in the car about 7:40 and guess what 95.5 FM was playing?? How can these stations not understand that the ceaseless repetition is going to kill all of the radio stations?? 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

11/04/2023

I think Chicago rock radio is at its worst point in years. With the osmosis of the station playlists, the same songs get played on one station, then a few minutes later on another station. Worst songs:
Zombie by Cranberries
Cult of Personality by Living Colour
Any number of songs by Green Day
3-4 “hits” by Nirvana (worst of all, Smells Like Teen Spirit)

It’s like entering Hell where the same songs are on permanent loop. And it’s lazy - knowing other songs, deepcuts takes knowledge and most of all, love of music, which the suits don’t have - music is just an indistinguishable commodity.
Thank god I got a 1TB iPod for all of my music. Now to bring it with me everywhere.

03/04/2023

Saturday, I was driving and at around 4:20 PM, WCHI played “ Would?” by Alice in Chains. At 4:35 PM WXRT played the same song.
And yesterday, XRT played Bohemian Rhapsody. Why? Doesn’t it get enough play on all of the other stations? 💤💤💤💤💤💤

28/03/2023

Running errands a few minutes ago, XRT played I Fought The Law by The Clash and Beverly Hills by Weezer. Q101 played Green Day, as did WCHI. WDRV played Manford Mann’s covers of Bruce Springsteen songs. I finally turned to the classical station.
There is no question that Chicago has the most boring, uninspired, redundant rock radio stations in the US; perhaps the World. 😴😴😴😡😡😡😡

The Station published the songs played during Saturday Morning Flashback yesterday and shared it on FB. I listened to quite a bit of it because they played good songs that the hardly ever play. Of course, I had to get in my 2 cents worth (waiting to see how many of the lemmings will attack me saying that XRT is the best thing ever)… 😈😈😈😳😳😳😡😡😡

LIn Brehmer gave us one more parting gift. Today’s tribute features a true diversity of songs and styles - everything that the station used to be and has not been in decades.
Lin knew that the station was boring, but he had a job that he loved and so, he kept playing the same stuff but interjected a great rare song when he could.
My wish is that the suits maybe are listening and taking note. Maybe the lemming listeners will take note and tell the station to open up the playlist? Think of the money they could make if they didn’t just be lazy and play the same 💩?
But they won’t. They will trust their computers and algorithms and of course the pay-for-play that the remaining record companies give to support mediocre artists.
Free radio is dying, has been for years as streaming, satellite radio, and mp3 players have taken over. Why? Because stations are cutting their own throats limiting the music they play and not highlighting some harder edged acts. It there was just a few people in power with foresight and courage, maybe radio could come back from the abyss, like vinyl records? No, it’s easier to count the profits, declining as they may be than to be bold. Cowards! 😡😡😡😡😡😡

I know that I complain about WXRT a lot, but I never bitch about the DJs. I know 3 of them: Tom Marker, Terri Hemmert and Lin Brehmer.
We lost Lin this morning and it is a sad day. Lin was funny, philosophical, had the greatest voice, and was a nice guy when you met him.
Now, I can share a story. Lin and I used to message each other in the early days of social media, where I would complain about the limited playlist. For quite awhile, they had the Friday Feature Artist, and one week the artist would be Talking Heads. I messaged Lin asking how Friday would be any different from the rest of the week/month/year??? Lin sent back - “it hurts me more than it does you.”
Goodbye to our best friend in the whole world… 😭😭😭

21/01/2023

Saturday Morning Flashback is going along great - 1982 - then they play “Should I Stay or Should i Go” by The Clash. Don’t they play that song enough every day? How about something elie on Combat Rock (not Casbah)? How about “Know Your Rights?” “Ghetto Defendent?”
I’m tired of even bitching about this boring, complacent, corrupter of listeners’ souls. My appreciation of the DJs and the occasional great, little played song isn’t enough. Maybe it’s time to cut them loose forever… 😡😡😡😡😳😳😳

14/01/2023

Once again, Saturday Morning Flashback has been really good this morning. If only the other 164 hours in the week were as diverse… 😡😡😡

29/11/2022

It is good hearing Lin Brehmer back on the air... The songs remain the same (not to be confused with the Led Zeppelin film) 😁😳😡

22/11/2022

I know that usually I’m blasting WXRT for boredom, ageism and other things, but I have rarely said anything bad about the DJs. I know Tom Marker and Terri, and have met Lin Brehmer several times. They are all friendly, very knowledgeable on music and I think, if they could be honest, they would make many of the same complaints about the station’s playlist as we do.
You probably know that Lin has been on medical leave since July fighting cancer. So, it is VERY good news that he will be returning to the airwaves Monday from 10 AM to 1PM. I am happy he is back.
Love the DJ’s, hate the station!
❤️❤️❤️❤️😎😎😎😎

I have had the itch to write a piece asking why Chicago rock radio is so boring? Not just WXRT but the other stations are no better. The only shows that show what good radio are Saturday Morning Flashback on WXRT and the History of Alternative on Sundays on Q101.
After I write the letter, I will of course post it here, but im going to send it to the newspapers, alternative papers, Kot and DeRogadis and maybe even the GMs of the radio stations. It is said that regular radio is dying to satellite radio, streaming, but short-term limited profits could be enhanced by being truly different. Or maybe im just chasing windmills??? 😢😢

27/09/2022

The decline of WXRT continues. This Sunday, Tom Marker will broadcast the final Blues Breakers program at 9:00 PM.
Once again, the ”suits” who wouldn’t know good music if it hit them on the head, continue to dismantle the station. Long have I complained that while the station plays more artists than anyone, they only play the same 2-3 songs by those artists (except for Beatles and Talking Heads.
XRT says that it “the station for music lovers.” It should continue… for people who only have 100 records. Or are in a coma! 😡😡😡😡😡😡

28/08/2022

The History of Alternative on Q101 on Sunday mornings is the recent era version of Saturday Morning Flashback - a terrific assortment of songs you know and some songs I’d never heard before. Some of them were good, some “meh” but it was nice to be surprised.
If only we could get a station with that sense of adventure… 😢

The station always takes credit for bands playing in Chicago that they never play. Well, as usual, I’m not letting them ...

The station always takes credit for bands playing in Chicago that they never play. Well, as usual, I’m not letting them get away with it…(my comments are in Comments section below)… 😈😈😈😈😈

It was just announced that Lin Brehmer will be taking a leave of absence to fight prostate cancer. I have met Lin a few times and he is the same person you hear on air: funny, smart, music lover. This site complains about the station, but always about the limited playlist that is so boring. This has never been about the on-air staff. Aside from Lin, I know Terri Hemmert and Tom Marker - all lovely people. I have had issues with Richard Milne’s attitude, but I am very sad about the illness that is taking his wife’s life, and pulled him off the air.
Like Mr. Milne and his wife, I wish nothing but the best to them and Lin. As much as I wish the station were better, this is not personal. One of the things many of us love about the station are the on-air personalities, who have become our friends even if we’ve never met them. When something bad happens to them, happens to us as well.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Really, Chicago rock radio is just lazy.
I heard Interstate Love Song by STP on XRT, then heard it a few minutes later on CHI. Led Zeppelin; Nirvana; if I hear Zombie by The Cranberries soon, I’ll puke.
The audience is happy with the same old 💩, and they have been bred not to know any better.
Just sucks… 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

I can’t help myself… 😈😈😈😈

11/06/2022

Saturday Morning Flashback has been good this morning: 1988 and started with Graham Parker!!😎

08/06/2022

Oh boy! Vance “No” Joy is coming to Chicago. Easy enough not to go, but we’ll be inundated by his boring music on XRT for months… 💤💤
