I just had an amusing interaction with the University of Arizona President Robbins before the Campus Conversations event scheduled in the aftermath of the students charged for protesting against the Border Patrol on campus. President Robbins has been avoiding me for a week and doesn’t want to answer some pretty basic questions about his involvement in the decision to charge the students. What role did Robbins have in the filing of the charges? Why did Robbins seek out a meeting with Border Patrol officials in the immediate aftermath of the protest? What was discussed at these meetings? How does Robbins explain the fact that his own office is represented by the same person as the UofA Police Department (Chris Sigurdson)? The truth is, there are hundreds of activists working tirelessly and anonymously across the entire 2000 mile border with Mexico. They work to help people survive their journey, to assimilate when they arrive, and to maintain or gain permanent status. None of them would be surprised to see US Border Patrol agents engaging in this kind of behavior: they have seen it first hand for years. This video was shot in Tijuana, Mexico looking into Otay Mesa, California. It shows a group of people crossing the existing border wall in view of the eight new border wall prototypes which were recently erected. He and all other refugees and asylum seekers face a difficult legal process which begins with six months in a privately owned and operated prison. There are now dozens of these prisons scattered across the United States. Thousands of people are being held in them including pregnant women and very small children. Head to Hidalgo, Texas to chat with Scott Nicol of Sierra Club and South Texas College about what the "border levee wall" is and what the militariaization of the border means for the humans who live on la frontera.
We spent the day in Ciudad Juárez with an El Paso local who is familiar with certain local flavors and spots which we never could have been aware of. If you've never heard of Jesús Malverde, he is the "Patron Saint of Smugglers" or the "Mexican Robin Hood" - or maybe he's a myth, a line in a "narcocorrido", an apparition, a dream, a nightmare. Meet Brownsville legend Pamela Taylor: she immigrated from England in 1946 and has lived on the same beautiful piece of land directly on the Rio Grande ever since. She shares her story of coming to America: she married an American infantryman of Mexican descent and moved to Texas. She's been there ever since, and she has a perspective on the area that is invaluable to understanding some of what is going on at the border.

Meet Aleida Flores of Los Ebanos, Texas: her family has lived on the same land for five generations (since the mid-1800's!). Nearly ten years ago Aleida and her family successfully stopped the government from seizing their property to build a different version of the border fence/wall. Now they are fighting that same battle all over again. The US Government is attempting to seize Aleida's land, but she isn't alone. Hundreds of property owners are in similar situations due to impending construction of the proposed border fence/wall with Mexico. We are deeply grateful to Aleida for sharing her story with us. We start our video series on the border with a trip to the very last southeastern moment on American earth. Where the power of the Rio Grande flows into the open expanse of the Gulf of Mexico. This is a place of water and fishermen and birds and marsh. The entire area is blanketed by US Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement agencies. There is actually a (very sleepy) US Border Patrol checkpoint about 2 miles away from Boca Chica Beach, the name of the place where the river meets the gulf.
