The mega Shenzhen-Zhongshan bridge-immersed tube-bridge express across the Pearl Delta opened yesterday (Sunday 30 June 2024) https://buff.ly/3W4KuGn to great acclaim. Eagerness to cross the sea link attracted maximum traffic load on the eight-lane highway. Next to the 55km long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge-immersed tube-bridge crossing of the Delta about 30km to the south (the longest in the world), the new 24km sea crossing cuts travel time between the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan from two hours to 30 minutes. Estimated at 44.69 billion Yuan (about $6 billion USD), the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link took seven years to construct and is a marvel of civil engineering and innovative immersed tube construction https://buff.ly/3W4KuGn - no less so than the extraordinary Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao link that opened in October 2018 (watch the video https://buff.ly/3W5bXYo). The two mega sea crossings are part of China’s plan to create a global center of technology and innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, an area that reported a total economic output of more than 14 trillion Yuan (about $1.96 trillion USD) in 2023.
