I have a LOT of Heather Knight's designs, from bookmarks to sachets to shawls, capes and scarves to throw pillows. Glorious explosions of colour!
Heather says she fell into sewing for a living purely by accident. When she returned to work after her oldest son was born, she realized that she didn’t like working for others. She quit her job, with the plan that if she could make a mere $50 a week from sewing, it would be all she would need.

A blast from deep in our archives from the past; Bas Jamieson passed away more than a decade ago but is still remembered. VOCM radio, known affectionately in the province as the "Voice of the Common Man," runs talk shows each evening, Sunday through Thursday. These shows, called "Nightline," are perhaps the most popular forum for public communication in the province. Matters of community interest are discussed, political issues are raised and debated, or sometimes people just want to tell a story of something that happened to them.

It’s 1896. Leo Hirschfield introduces the Tootsie Roll; the words “Yukon” and “gold rush” become synonymous; and the first American-made gasoline automobile makes its debut. It’s also the year that 17-year-old Julia Alma Landry from the village of Eel Brook, Nova Scotia, makes the arduous journey to Halifax to join the Sisters of Charity.

Wild turkeys are starting to make their presence felt across the region. Here's a bit of a primer on these noisy birds.
Questions are part of understanding and the new birds on the block have people asking just how long has the wild turkey been roaming the woods of western New Brunswick. Accurate answers are sadly scarce and it falls to personal encounters—with a brush of science to lend a hint of legitimacy.

Which is the true oldest court? In New Brunswick or in France? If you’re a francophile or student of international-basketball history, you may be yelling “Arrêt! What about Paris!?” A YMCA in France’s capital has long claimed to be home to the oldest surviving basketball court, hosting its first game in December 1893. This story helps to unravel the mysteries around a historic site.

How a NS couple started with a greenhouse, only to discover the road to success is paved with chocolate
Nancy and Greg McTiernan have such a sweet spot for chocolate, they’ve made a very successful business out of making and selling everyone’s favourite treat! It was, however, the McTiernans’ green thumbs that led them to discover this sweet calling.

Such an interesting story from our archives! Perhaps a little-known bit of Island history?
The TB facility came and went, its disappearance a symbol of PEI pride and self reliance.
To the First World War-era residents of rural and rolling Emyvale, PEI, the sprawling Dalton Sanatorium must have seemed like an apparition, rising out of red soil through the Island mist in 1916.

You could call Jen a renaissance woman. She paints, sketches, does graphic design, and paints murals, particularly in restaurants. She plays keyboards and sings. She raises and breeds some 30 varieties of chicken, selling eggs from her layers to locals, and eggs and chicks from the unusual breeds to poultry fanciers around the East Coast.

From our archives, a story about a famous sailmaker. Much has been written about the original Bluenose, her design and building and her racing history. But her winning ways were also aided by the mighty sails that would catch the wind and help her leave her competitors in her wake. This is the story of James “Harry” Hamm, the sailmaker for that illustrious vessel as well as many others.

Happy New Year, friends! Let's talk about summer savory, which apparently we Atlantic Canadians have a great fondness for. It's not just for the holiday season, either! This story includes several great recipes (I made the pork roast last night, so good.)
Savory is a staple in the Acadian dish fricot, a chicken stew with dumplings; Newfoundlanders use it in fish cakes and also Jigg's Dinner, a boiled dinner of salt beef, potatoes, turnip, turnip greens and cabbage; and people generally use it in stuffing.
