This week on Hindsight: The Best of the Rest of The B-52s!
(Are they a Veteran’s Day theme…?)
Famous bomber aside, The B-52s have been a household name for decades, so one might not think “overlooked” when considering Kate, Cindy, and Fred’s contributions to modern rock, but “underplayed”? Oh c’mon guys, HECK yeah when you consider how amazing their supporting songs were compared to the average band. Seriously, how many album tracks have you forever tolerated, waiting for the really GOOD song to play because your cassette track-search feature was crap, or WORSE, you didn’t want to manually search for fear of accidentally hearing a chunk of it, ruining the moment?! Well The B-52s toss those beats into the garbage can and just rock the good stuff, full stop. In fact, I declare every track on their debut album was right up there with its galactic hit, Rock Lobster. (He DIDN’T…)
Their interstellar guitarist, Ricky Wilson (brother to singer, Cindy), tragically died of AIDS in 1985 leaving a horrible, sudden silence in the most upbeat, quirky band we’d ever heard. As a result of his contribution, the 4+ albums he completed with them were easily their artistic best, so were gonna spend a couple hours with everything pre-Love Shack, and wiggle the mirror-fleck popcorn right off the ceiling with the best of the rest of the B-52s!
