Black Disability Justice Syllabus ❤️🖤💚 Link in Bio!

Black disabled people are often left out of conversations about disability. We face anti-blackness within the workplace, when accessing healthcare (if we can access it at all), in society at large, and within disabled spaces.

Black disabled people have been part of many movements for justice, but historical records rarely reflect our contributions.

Sins Invalid offers our Black Disabled Futures Month Syllabus as an opportunity to honor the legacies of Black disabled artists, thinkers, activists, and leaders and a tool for future work. We will update this syllabus periodically. If you have something to add to the list, please email Cyree Jarelle Johnson, Social Media and Community Engagement Specialist at [email protected]

As per usual, we are a little late on this post but it's important so we wanted to share regardless.

We hope that our Crip Riot community had a wonderful Juneteenth celebration this past Monday! We acknowledge that freedom for Black d/Deaf and disabled people is often not the center of discussion around Juneteenth, and we urge you to remember this throughout your conversations and celebrations. Additionally: are your Juneteenth events accessible to Black d/Deaf and disabled people?

For those of you who are non-Black allies, let this serve as a reminder that a commitment to equity requires consistent, ongoing action. Support Black-owned businesses, take part in mutual-aid networks, uplift Black voices and stories, and take a critical look at the organizations you are a part of to see if they, too, are following through on their commitments to equity. There are SO many incredible Black d/Deaf and disabled activists and creators out there, and we'll try to highlight a few on our stories for you to support.

Long time, no post...

The past year has been an absolute rollercoaster for our team, so we've been in a low-spoons hiatus from social media for a while now. However- we're moving soon and we figured that with a new home should come a new season for Crip Riot, so we are back!

To those of you who stuck with us this whole time- thank you. Your support means the world to us. We can't do what we do without you!

Stay tuned for some Pride Month shennanigans, sales, and disability community stories. If you want to stay updated outside of our social media posts, join our newsletter here: https://www.cripriot.com/join-newsletter

It is Q***r Pride on Crip time! Our team is committed to uplifting the stories of our community. As a continuation of June's Q***r pride month, in partnership with Seattle Pride, we are excited to showcase a couple of folx doing amazing work for our community.

With that, we are thrilled to share a profile on Draco/Moomin ( on Instagram and TikTok)! Draco uses it/he pronouns. To learn more about Draco’s work, story, and social media, visit it's website here: https://witchgov.carrd.co/

Draco (it/he) is a q***r and disabled goth artist, social media influencer, and Animation student at Cornish College of the Arts. As an agender male, biromantic asexual and autistic, intersectionality is a huge part of Draco’s life. Much of its social media, art, and education expresses the difficulty of feeling seen within a multitude of overlapping identities.

With over 30k followers on Tiktok, it is also focused on creating disabled representation among the goth community, where despite the goth cultural value of inclusion, many events and styles are inaccessible to disabled people. As Autistic-identifying, it has expressed difficulty in finding masc-presenting/punk/goth clothing that allows for heat and sensory sensitivities. Its social media posts feature it in goth outfits with a back brace, or walker, to work towards de-stigmatization.

Draco’s art centers disabled body-positivity, within the context of alternative subcultures, expressing its own experience through digital art and other various art mediums. It has some really awesome pins, including one that says “Some Punks Need Mobility Aids Too” (see image in post). Draco aims to create art for Autistic and disabled people that is fierce, sexy, and authentic, since so much of the available merch for Autistics is very infantilizing.

Support its art (commissions are open!) through its art instagram here: . Pin sales are also available through its Ko-fi store here: https://ko-fi.com/transghostart

If you’d like us to share your story, reach out to us on social media!

"I've seen a bunch of pride flags with wheelchairs on them, but nothing for invisible disabilities. Have you considered making something… with a rainbow flag with spoons on it?"

THE QU**RS ASKED FOR Q***R SPOONIE SWAG. OUR QU**RS UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT.

Whether you are an Anxious Gay, a Disabled Demi or a person who wants to see an accessible q***r pride, we've got the stickers for you!

Our spoonie pride stickers came about because of a fan recommendation from a mother-daughter duo who reached out and said they couldn't find Q***r Spoonie swag. Madeline, , and her mom, an LGBT+ ally, are both Autistic, and Madeline identifies as a "generally chronically ill" le***an.

Madeline shared with us that she "…didn't see anything out there for disability pride… and the story of the spoon theory always hit home. [she] belongs to a number of marginalized communities… [and she] wanted something to represent that intersectionality."

Our team at Crip Riot sees every recommendation that y'all send us (or leave us in your order notes) and its our honor to make products and share stories that leave y'all feeling represented and seen. With that in mind, our most frequent product recommendations have the potential to be made into stickers, and our highest performing stickers have potential to be made into other gear.

Patches? Pins? Hoodies? Sleeveless tank?

Tell us what you want to see in the comments, in our DMs or in your order notes. If you buy it, we'll make it. Crip Riot exists for y'all. Happy Pride ❤

There is a rainbow watermark that reads "Make Pride Accessible"

So our team is pretty gay. And this wasn't planned. We were pleasantly surprised to find it out as we were preparing for launch last October.

As we were developing our product line, we wanted at least one product in our store that was a nod to our Q***r selves. But… we were running out of spoons, and launch was on the horizon. The only thing we could think to do was to put a rainbow on our Crip Riot Logo.

And we will tell you: We debated whether or not to do it.

Because it seemed like what a lot of other businesses do: slapping a rainbow on their own branding and calling it gay. But after some discussion, we figured it was better than no explicitly Q***r swag in our store. To poke fun at our own "low spoons" q***r dilemma we called it "Q***r and Low Spoons" as a sort of inside joke.

And in the spirit of being Q***r and Low Spoons, we will be releasing some Q***r swag this month for pre-order! Trying to make up for what we couldn't do last fall when we launched, with some uniquely gay sh*t.

New Q***r swag and Q***r Disabled profiles are COMING SOON (in total Cripspacetime). Stay tuned!

The Husky 100 is a one of the greatest honors and recognitions for students at the University of Washington. We are so proud and excited to share that Joyce Lin, a Crip Riot co-founder and our Web & Graphic Designer, has been selected as one of the 2022 Husky 100! Joyce is truly one of the most thoughtful, talented, and brilliant individuals on the face of this planet, and we are so proud to have her as a part of this company.

For those of you who want to learn more about Joyce, here is her bio:

"Joyce learned to lip read as a baby and that’s how she fooled the people around her into thinking she was hearing for the first four years of her life. Ten years of speech therapy later, she still pronounces her R’s like W’s and skips over sounds occasionally, but sounding like a croaking frog hasn’t stopped her from being loud AF with her voice and hands when she’s mad (with anti-ableist rage). Passionate about designing for social good and inclusion, one of her pet peeves is small illegible text on designs.

Growing up, the world reinforced the stigma of disability into her identity. It wasn’t until attending the University of Washington and learning about disability justice that she discovered the disabled community and their joy, fight, and resilience. On this Crip Riot journey, she hopes that a new generation can be empowered in their identities and embody the radical disabled and crip pride that is so often hidden in our societies."

The University of Washington's 2022 F*** Stairs pledge has come to an end, but our fight against exclusion and inaccessibitity has not. For all of you who took the pledge and began to notice just how ableist our environments are: don't lose this momentum. Keep noticing, keep talking about it, and keep advocating. We are not a fully inclusive community until all of us can travel to our classes together, eat in any restaurant together, catch public transit together, and access the world together.

If you are interested in bringing the F*** Stairs campaign to YOUR college campus, check us out at fstairs.com (link in bio).

2 DAYS UNTIL THE UW F*** STAIRS KICKOFF

Join us at the University of Washington- Seattle (UW), for a comedy show like no other (remotely or in-person)!

Meet comedian and creator of F*** Stairs, Lindsey! Lindsey (she/her) has been disabled since birth, technically. Rumor has it she walked until 18 months, decided “this blows,” and refused to take another step, ever. Instead, she’s taken up driving everywhere as fast as wheelchair technology will allow and hasn’t looked back since. However, strangers continuously insist on hearing her medical history whenever she finds herself idly waiting at a bus stop. One confusing childhood later being paraded as an ad on the side of the dog-treat box, she began to explore a question that haunted her daily: where are all the other disabled people?

Learn more about Lindsey’s experience as a disabled student activist at UW, and what inspired her to create the F*** Stairs campaign this Friday, 6pm, in the Intellectual House! RSVP in the ASUW Student Disability Commission's bio ()!

Introducing the first of our disabled student activist profiles! Meet Thomas!

Thomas (he/him) is a q***r, latino, and disabled-identifying student at the University of Washington (UW). He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age and has multiple mobility issues that impact his access. During his first year at UW, his classes were held remotely and he had few issues accessing them. All that began to change as he approached his second year. It was at this time that he underwent orthopedic surgery.

While recovering from surgery, the UW started its "remote to in-person" learning transition which hindered his accessibility inside and outside of the classroom. Thomas noticed the classrooms assigned to him were inaccessible, and the support of getting accommodations was difficult. Getting from one class to another required a lot of time. To ensure he had access, Thomas decided to have a mix of in-person and asynchronous classes so he can save his “transportation time”. His access issues inspired him to make change within the higher education system, so he joined the ASUW Student Disability Commission as the Assistant Director, where he where he can enact change for current and future students.

He shared with us that, "Ever since COVID made virtual learning increasingly relevant, I have heard from many that it doesn’t work. But, that is not true. As a disabled student, hybrid learning gave me a sense of flexibility to prioritize myself and my needs to stay healthy and live free. Keeping hybrid learning out of our schools is just an excuse to maintain an inequitable environment. Movements like 'Hybrid learning Now' and 'F*** Stairs' matter as they help me live my life authentically."

We found ourselves in spaces built by and for disabled people. Three generations of ASUW Student Disability Commission Directors (2017-2022), each with our own legacy. All three of us Mad as hell.

Stay tuned as we spend the next several weeks highlighting the activist work being done at the University of Washington (UW) by disabled students and allies. All of this leading up to the launch of the UW 2022 F*** Stairs Campaign on April 8th. These student and alumni efforts are responsible for cultivating spaces where disabled people can thrive.

One of these spaces we found ourselves, was the UW D Center, the Disability & Deaf cultural center. We've included an excerpt from a zine found in the UW D Center back in 2017. A testament to the impact of Disability and Deaf cultural centers on college campuses. It has been on Ashley's bulletin board for years, a reminder of the continuing need for spaces "for those who [are] really crazy".

Then they just want you to die"

Working on Cripspacetime is vibrant, dirty, beautiful, complicated. It means defying rigid forms of who we are supposed to be in favor of who we were born to be.

I’m a fu***ng mess during days sometimes. This moment of normy splendor is my moment to hide and wait for the pain to pass. Sometimes I welcome being forced to slow down, but other times the pain catches me when I don’t want it to. But when I find peace in who I am, and let myself shine at 4AM, I am embracing my Cripspacetime.

Cripspacetime is about thriving in spaces and times that the world considers reasons to hide you. But we won’t be hidden. Our culture is too vibrant, too beautiful, too messy to be ignored.

Crip culture is this fabric of expression, pride and community that embraces those of us who exist within Cripspacetime. We know you have been told you aren’t worthy because you’re up at 3 AM losing your s**t. But it’s OK not to be OK. And sometimes that’s just the vibe. Sometimes embracing your shine isn’t about being pristine, it’s about finding who you are.
