Paula Lazor Cruickshank is the former host of “Education Innovations.” The podcast aired from June 2016 to October 2022.

Episodes explore how hands-on, project based learning engages students and helps them see the connection between education, a future career, and the world around them. The first episode explored career and technical education programs. The final show comes full circle and examines how hands-on, project based learning can benefit all students.

There is also a larger message: Developing essential skills —critical thinking; problem solving; collaboration, creativity, and communication — prepares students well beyond the classroom. After all, shouldn’t education teach all of us to become engaged members of society and contribute positively to it?

High school students in Northern Virginia have several options to help them achieve their college and career goals. For dual enrolled students in Arlington Public Schools, some are well on their way to completing one or two full years of college by the time they earn their high school diploma. Today’s show focuses on some of the educational options and partnerships that are providing pathways for students to earn two-year and four-year degrees, including on-line learning and a NOVA One Year General Studies Certificate. Students earning the NOVA certificate take high school courses equivalent to a freshman year at NOVA and enroll as second year NOVA students.

Businesses are struggling to find employees with the knowledge and skills to meet their workforce needs. This widening gap is perhaps the largest issue facing the American workforce—and the future of the U.S. economy. A recent research project by Marymount University and the George Mason’s Center for Regional Analysis concluded that the mismatch between education and work readiness is the number one hurdle in expanding Northern Virginia’s technology employment.

To address the technology skills gap, Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, has taken the lead in designing the TechSet program, a nine-week, intensive training program in workforce readiness. The one-year pilot project is focused on economically disadvantaged Junior and Senior college students from universities serving the Northern Virginia. It combines instruction and hands-on mentorship to help students develop the essential skills for the workplace upon graduation. Guest: Jonathan Aberman, College of Business, Innovation, Leadership and Technology, Marymount University.
