SE15 Productions In-depth personal storytelling from Syria through documentary film & audio. www.se15productions.com

We started SE15 Productions as a response to what we felt was a significant lack of civilian stories and human experience being told from within the crisis in Syria. As the media lens swings haphazardly - focussing on Syria, away from it and then back again - many may feel that their newsfeeds are in fact saturated with reports on what’s happening to the country. But the day-to-day experiences of

its people, and the deeply personal repercussions of five years lived through war, were undeniably missing from the media narrative. Consistently we noticed a depth lacking in the type of human detail necessary to reach through an audience’s innate wall of otherness and grip them, pin them to their seat with a more experiential sense of ‘that could be me’. As a production company with Syrian heritage, the past five years have naturally been close to our hearts and painful to witness, and in fact the company was born as Director Safwon Suleyman began to document the story of his own family, whose eventual escape from Syria took his father on a journey that no one, least him, had expected (read more on LESSONS FROM MY FATHER here). As a company we’re passionate about in depth, long form storytelling; character led stories that get under the skin of a lived experience. We believe that it’s through the small details - the mundanities and the absurdities, and what happens between the drama - that these experiences can truly be understood and communicated. On our slate over the coming months we have both audio and film projects; Lessons From My Father, a feature length documentary telling the story of Safwon’s reconnection with his father who, after arriving in Istanbul in 2013, set up the city’s first free school for Syrian children; Yomeyat, a monthly podcast feature the audio diaries of Syrians who have recently arrived in Europe; and a co-production with Gallivant Productions on Another News Story, a feature length documentary turning the camera on the media circus behind the refugee crisis over the last year and a half.

To mark the beginning of refugee week 2022 we wanted to pay tribute to one of the United Kingdom’s most celebrated humanitarian efforts.

As such we will be screening On Our Doorstep at the recently reopened historic cinema The Electric Palace in Harwich Town, which was the main port of entry for the Kindertransport in 1939.

The screening will take place at 19:30 on the 19th of June and will be followed by a Q&A with director Thomas Laurance.

You can book tickets on the Electric Palace’s official website.

A ‘Leaseholders Together’ Rally will take place at 12.00 on 15 July 2021 in Parliament Square.

Over recent decades, weak and gameable building regulations, with no oversight of what was actually being built, have enabled serious malpractice in the construction industry, leaving thousands of buildings across the country unsafe or potentially unsafe. Government failed to act decisively, dragging millions of people into an unprecedented building safety crisis. Meanwhile, the construction industry has made billions in profits since the Grenfell tragedy.

From at least 700,000 people initially trapped in this nightmare, the Government has now dragged millions of people into this crisis through the issuance of consolidated safety guidance in January 2020.

What started as a cladding scandal has become a building safety crisis, with average costs to fix “non-cladding” defects estimated to be c.£25,500 per leaseholder, and sometimes considerably more. Buildings cannot be made half-safe.

The cost to resolve this crisis has been estimated at £15bn by the House of Commons Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee. In June 2020 they said “Funding of remediation should reflect where blame lies. It is clear that there have been widespread failures. What is also clear, however, is that residents are in no way to blame, and it is our view that they should bear none of the cost of remediation.” So far, the Government has chosen to only commit £5.1bn, of which developers are to contribute a tiny £2bn over ten years, through a levy. Leaseholders are being forced to pay the remaining costs.

Many leaseholders have already spent thousands of pounds on interim measures, such as the often-ineffective waking watch, and exorbitant insurance premiums, which have soared hundreds of percent over premiums from previous years – right now, many are paying sums equating to a second mortgage on these. Some leaseholders have already gone bankrupt and lost their homes.

The mental health impact of the building safety crisis is enormous. Nearly a quarter – 23% – of all leaseholders in cladding sites have considered su***de or self-harm, according to a 2020 survey by the UK Cladding A

5 years in the making....

Ahead of our pre-release screening this Friday http://bit.ly/Doorstepdoc director Thomas Laurance writes of his film:

"With On Our Doorstep, I wanted to expose the human cost of hard borders and of Government neglect, but also to shine a light on what’s possible when people choose to build bridges rather than walls.

We live in a world where we are increasingly encouraged to fear the outsider and to treat charity with suspicion, to close our doors and to hide behind our border walls. But many people reject this and choose to respond with compassion and humanity, and it’s these people who inspired me to make the film"

special pre-release screening this Friday at 7.30pm + Q&A with .Dhillon,Juliet Stevenson + more. In aid of Tickets and information here: bit.ly/Doorstepdoc
