Happy Valentines❤️

And now we're at February 14th, the day we celebrate love.
On my part, those who follow me have probably noticed that love/a special someone in my life, is a topic I don't bring up and often attempt to avoid.
The reason for this is that I have in fact been single for many years. I was married to my son's father, got divorced and then felt the need to be alone and heal. For some, this takes time … and it did for me.

Of course I miss love, and hope it will come my way some day. This year I have decided to celebrate Valentine's Day – to celebrate love, and all the people who give love to other people … love in life.
I find this to be very important in the hard times we're now living in.

Tato Jack.

Tato-Jack / Helmuth Michaelsen told a lot of stories about himself. According to one of them he started tattooing while working as a stoker at sea. He bought two tattooing machines from Jack Strong in London and taught himself the craft by praticing on everyone onboard the ship. Even used the artist name Jack. Another of his great stories was that he was the mayor of his hometown, Nakskov, prior to his tattooing days.

Tato-Jack was once the great man in Nyhavns tattoo chene. In 1939 he opened a tattooing studio on Nyhavn 17. Back then a tattooer many times would share the space with a tobacconist or barber or even sit in the backroom of a bar. Nyhavn 17 was now exclusively a Tattoo studio.

In 1948 Jack acquired a large former shop his famous, Nyhavn 37, with plenty of room for both clients and employees. Almost every tattoo artist active in Copenhagen at this time, was at some point employed by Jack. He drew well and his lines were even and forceful, a very fast tattooer in his heydays. His women's faces in particular became famous. Among the Swedes, who at this time made out half the clientel in Nyhavn, hes name was so famous that virtually everyone among them believed himself to have been tattooed by him even if they had been into any other studio in Nyhavn.
Jack liked a few too many beers while working, so his finances was managed by his wife Bodil, and his employees was to report directly. However, Jack often managed to extract some hundred-kroner bills, wrapping it inside some cut-out pieces of newspaper, he would flash his "cashbundles" on the bars, even tipping the girls there, by quickly thrusting the paper into their pockets and sending them away.

In the early 80s, Jack had reached the end of the line. He was suffering from poor health and couldnt stay current on the tattooing scene. In the winter of 1984, he died. Tattoo Bimbo took over his studio and was to run it until it closed in 1993. RIP.

Tato Svend
Svend Kukkerig

A Danish tattoo legend.

May 1st 1946 - January 17th 2020

Svend ”Tato Svend” Kukkerig began his tattooing career by handpoking simple designs on his friend at the age of 12 in Copenhagen. He spent the late 60s strolling through the harbours of Copenhagen, finding clients.

His professional career started in Nyhavn in 1969, alternating between the studios of Tato Jack and Tato Bob. In 1973 he overtook his former colleague Tato Peter's premises at Lille Strandstræde in Nyhavn and opened his own studio there. This studio was to gain world recognition, and the many world famous tattoo artists who visited and worked there include Bernie Luther, Filip Leu, Mike Malone, Kandi Everett, to name but a few. Svend was to put his stamp on the Danish tattoo scene by introducing new styles, and different types of machines, needles, methods of sterilisation and more, making him a pioneer in this respect. He was to keep this studio until 2012.

Svend has been influential to the development of Danish tattoo art in many ways. In the mid-70s, when most artists went for classic sailor tattoos, Svend did artistic, quite different tattoos of roses and the like, making his style stand out from the crowd. He was himself a tattoo machine constructor, as well as making his own pipes and handles that also became popular with other tattoo artists. His skills as a constructor was considerable and he sported a whole machine park in his basement.

Svend regularly visisted tattoo conventions and often acted as a judge at conventions, and remained active on the scene to the very end. In later years, he did on special occasions do some tattooing at his good friend Frank Rosenkilde's Copenhagen studio Bel Air Tattoo. He was also, in his own studio days, a member of the Danish tattooist union organization, where he was later appointed honorary member.

My own history with the art of tattoos began there as well, getting my first tattoo at this very studio in Nyhavn. This was where I came in contact with tattoo artists, got introduced to the concept of tattoo conventions and by extent, the entire world of tattoos.

Tato Svend will be missed❤️
