Job openings at the Bay State Banner!!

The Bay State Banner is one of the most-read print and digital media outlets in Massachusetts.
Each week our stories reach millions of people, and we’re seeking to expand our coverage by adding a Managing editor to our team. The Banner has been covering Massachusetts communities of color for more than 58 years.
We are in search of an enterprising Managing Editor who loves news and telling valuable local stories.

Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
•Minimum 5+ years’ experience in a news leadership role, or comparable experience •Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Short- and long-term news coverage planning is
essential
•Manage multiple assignments in a high pressure, news environment
•Strong journalistic skills and news judgement
•Willing to work extra hours on short notice
•Contribute two news stories weekly
• Edit and confer on Editorials

Responsibilities
•The Managing Editor assists in helping to run the day-to -day operations of the newsroom
• Content editing stories
•Recruiting freelancers
•Manage, coach and schedule news staff
•Work with news management to decide weekly stories and help to arrange and coordinate news content
•Generate news stories and execute news coverage by coordinating journalists
•Assist the publishers to manage all aspects of the News Department
•Helps oversee weekly news coverage
• Editing and the Op-ed page
• Assisting the publishers on Editorials
• Gathering/arranging art to illustrate
stories
• Writing headlines
• Selecting front page stories

The Managing Editor:
•Collaborates in layout and illustration of stories in the print edition with the production team
•Localizing national trending stories in a service-journalism way to help readers understand the importance of a national issue to a local community
•Replicating evergreen, seasonal ideas when local buzz or breaking is lighter
•Have a commitment to and track record of improving the diversity of your team so that we can better serve our audiences and communities
•Lead and manage a team of editors and reporters on innovative content and audience strategies based on real-time metric data and strategic analysis
•Be a constant generator of story ideas, and help your team produce content early.

General Body Meeting | Need Board Members

Dear BABJ Members,

We're going to hold an action-packed general body Zoom meeting on June 22 at 7 p.m. Three NAACP National Board members will join this meeting prior to their national convention in Boston, July 28 - 31. We will also hear from two national (NABJ) presidential candidates who want to share their platforms: Tre'Vell Anderson and Ken Lemon.

So carve out some time in your schedule to attend. Going forward, please block off the fourth Thursday of each month for general body meetings.

We are revamping the BABJ Board and looking for new people to contribute to the success of this organization. Some of you have expressed interest in joining the board. Please review all positions here and fill out this form, letting us know where you best fit it. And please pay your dues.
