Whilst rummaging through boxes of my family's and my own life, all now stacked neatly in our storeroom, I came upon this photo. It was taken by errrm? a Nepalese or Tibetan guru? who knows?
Back in 1984 when I was living in Kathmandu, Nepal.
For a couple of days before leaving the capital city to go live in the Chitwan Valley jungle for a while, 'I did go a trekking', over three mountain ranges in the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains. I climbed three thousand feet above sea level - well it was so high and the air was so thin I was seeing everything double.
The trek eventually took me to a tiny distant village, the home of the parents of Pye. Pye was one of our servants in the wing of the Shah's palace which we had rented for our nine month stay in the land of the Sherpa, the 1960's hippie trail, the land of temples, monkeys, lepers and endless prayer flags.
The smoking of Nepalese temple balls was common in Kathmandu, along with he**in, child prostitutes and a multitude of other obscene lifestyles (especially within the Nepalese Royal Family) - but at that time I much preferred smoking sensimilla - (concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes without seeds) - beats the arse off getting pi**ed out of one's skull by swilling back gallons of beer any day - well that's what I figured then! (silly boy!)
