‘TO SAY NO’ MUSIC VIDEO OUT NOW!

It was an absolute blast to work on Alice’s latest M/V, we had a great time shooting “Just Friends” but this time we went for a completely different style and aesthetic to match the tone and nuances of Alice’s track - here is ‘To Say No’. I was inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s use of skip-printing, purposeful undercranking of the camera to create a trippy/disjointed effect which relates to the song’s lyrics. Furthermore, the use of ultra wide fish-eyes (8mm & 14mm lenses) really creates a distinctly jarring and introspective feel whilst in broad hot sunlight. Few reflectors used here and various settings to control this extremely blasty light, not to mention it being a very hot day, but we all pumped and committed to the shoot! Also wanted to emulate old VISION2 200T, and added some 35mm grain, which isn’t that noticeable on a small mobile screen, but adds depth and tonality when viewed correctly.

Looking for a EXEC. PRODUCER for an experimental / documentary short I’ve just completed and delivered from post-production. It’s in a ready state to be submitted to film festivals, delivered in multiple industry-standard screening formats, all mixed in 5.1 Surround. Looking for someone passionate about documentaries and supporting works who can help with funding.

Cinema Now - is a 14” minute short, shot entirely on Kodak Super 8mm Film, chronicling London’s many independent cinemas whilst they were closed during the Third National Lockdown in the UK. Shot between Early January to Mid-May 2021, just days before cinemas were allowed to re-open again.

We’re also looking at organising a test (audience / tech playback) screening of my MA thesis film prior to festival submissions, very soon indeed.

Genuine interest only please, send via email:

Hey everyone! Finally got round to putting together a lil’ Super 8mm & Super 16mm showreel of films I’ve shot over the past couple of years from Jan 2020 - December 2021, if you’re interesting in seeing it - please send me a DM and I’ll share with you the showreel URL + password as many of the projects seen are still in post-production.

As ever, I’m a 2nd Assistant Editor for Features/Short Form + Freelance AVID Film Editor, with a passion and side-hobby for stills & motion film cinematography (35mm/120mm + S8mm/Sup16mm).

You can find my past work + get in touch with me here:

29/12/2021

Camera Tests with my newly acquired Super-16 ready 'Krasnogorsk-3' camera, which can shoot variable frame rates from 1-48fps. It takes 100ft loads of film. Each full wind gives around 25 seconds of run-time.

The K3, originally produced between 1971 and 1993, was designed and manufactured in the former Soviet Union by KMZ. It's a spring-wound 16mm mirror-reflex camera and its popularity has continued to endure right through today. It is still used to train film students at University of Southern California's (USC) School of Cinema and Television. Filmmaker Spike Lee shot some of 'Get On The Bus' (1996) with the K3. The camera also makes a prominent appearance in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s 1979 film ‘Camera Buff’.

This particular K3 has been lovingly restored, and the gate has been widened and lens mount re-centered to accommodate shooting Super-16 on modern Kodak Vision3 single-perf 16mm film.

I was lucky to work with one of my former (Westminster) film school colleagues Ben Holt, who is a cinematographer & camera operator. He's a firm believer in shooting on celluloid film, like me, and he also shoots film (stills), in his own time.

It was such a joy to be outside in hot sunny weather with some of my favourite people, here's the result of a jam-packed day of shooting.

Disclaimer: The 500T roll was not loaded properly, hence the jittery-ness/shaky footage - this is due to the film perforations not biting onto the teeth of the pulldown mechanism properly, so the film flaps around and loses synchronisation very quickly. Was glad that this didn’t damage the camera at all, as that can happen. On the bright side, this is all part of the learning curve, and I’m glad that the issue was rectified. In future, a bit more of the roll may need to be used to ensure loading is done properly.

Picking up the largest ever order from on8Mil I’ve done to date - 38 rolls - on behalf of a few upcoming productions I’m shooting Super8 for - including a mixed-media fine art project, a live site-specific theatrical piece, and a music video. All shooting before Christmas 2021.

We’re going to need a bigger bag.

If you’re looking for a Super8 / 16mm cinematographer with own equipment and high-grade knowledge of analogue & post-production workflows, who you gonna call?

Definitely not Ghostbusters.

Hi everyone!

I've post-produced / edit-produced a compilation of experimental short films by wxmen artist filmmakers from the African, Caribbean, and Asian diaspora who are radically changing our relationship to histories and ancestral memories through artistic practice.

They are experimental films which enact archival disorientation through experimentation, diasporic memory ritual and pleasure. The films propose routes for displacing and rewriting authorised histories.

Some of the films are really fantastic, and would definitely appeal to filmmakers / directors / and editors looking to explore (inspiration for) their own artists’ moving image practice. Interesting uses of sound design too.

The screening is taking place this Monday at Regent Street Cinema (the birthplace of cinema in the UK! - which is only a short walk away from Oxford Circus and Goodge St. Underground Stations), and tickets are free via Eventbrite if interested. There’ll be a talk after the screening + drinks in the foyer.

We are so SO close! We’ve got less than 48 hours to raise just another £100 to reach the target of one of the latest productions I’m involved with - Cinema Now.

On behalf of the crew and cinema teams, there’s so many people I’d like to thank for helping us achieve our dream to make a film like this that chronicles the social, educational and historical impact of cinema on individuals through the backdrop of the pandemic & lockdowns. It’s been one of the most satisfying projects I’ve developed and it’s meant that people from all over the world can/have contributed with their audio excerpts and testimonials about what cinema means to them.

We’re in the very final stages of crowdfunding now and it would mean the absolute world to receive your support! Please back the film & share far and wide across social media

See you at the movies!

Looking for a Sound Recordist for an upcoming experimental documentary shot on Super8mm.

Principal Photography has already wrapped so am looking for an upcoming/student soundie who would be available between the 17th-19th May to record with me to record interviews with members of the public at various locations across central london.

Unfortunately this is an unpaid/voluntary opportunity but you’ll receive an IMDb credit, and also a copy of the film once it’s completed. I intend on sending the film to festivals as well, I totally respect that this opportunity may not be suitable for some people here as it’s unpaid; this is a personal-led, passion project which also supports my MA thesis project.

You can read more about the project here:

I’m really excited to present one of my most favourite projects to date I’ve worked on; a letter of admiration between friends, no matter how far away and ever-evolving they are. This is GABRIELA, beautifully conceived and directed by filmmaker and fellow editor Deana Kotiga and Gabriela herself who features in this experimental documentary.

The project initially premiered on IGTV (Instagram) thanks to the lovelies at Ni**le Hairs Zine on 10th Dec 2020 and I felt that, a few months later, would be the perfect time to reflect on one of my favourite editorial experiences combining different languages, rhythms and tracklaying / designing of sounds to reflect the inter-personal and interiority of the characters.

Very excited for what Deana works on next! Ill be posting an update of another film I had the pleasure of colour grading last summer during lockdown.

I'm really excited to announce I'm currently working on my next directorial project with a fabulous team of filmmakers I'm collaborating with (for the large part) remotely. I've been shooting this since the beginning of February and have been working closely with Gauge Film who have supplied the Film Stock and are looking after processing and 4K Scanning arrangements.

'CINEMA NOW' - Currently Filming. Coming Soon, Early 2022.

'Cinema Now' is a short, observational documentary film depicting closed cinemas from the point of view of their exteriors in and amongst the London cityscape. During the COVID-19 pandemic thus far, cinemas around the country have been closed and left (largely) without government funding or support - depriving audiences of their love for cinema. The film sets out to document cinemas in their current state. With no narration or music - except an overwhelming cascade of localised, diegetic sounds (traffic noise, pedestrians walking and natural ambiences) for every cinema filmed - the film intends to show cinemas as they are now: motionless, noiseless, devoid of activity. The occasional pedestrian may incidentally cross the frame, as might a car or bicycle - none of these occurrences will be scripted, or conversely, made to feel purposefully desolate. With the film, we want to capture and show not just closed cinemas but members of the public passively walking by and giving little, if any, notice to them. The film will thus take the form of an observational documentary, with long static shots of each venue. The matter of fact is that whilst the people's cinemas remain closed, wider society has felt powerless. The film is committed to demonstrating solidarity with independent cinema owners, staff and public alike who all cherish the cinema as an establishment, a social space and as a means for discovering film.

Special Thanks in particular to Ben Douglass, Ben Holt and Ralph Sansum who've (continually) been a beacon of light and inspiration in various ways throughout the process. Cheers to Mario AL Filmmaker who has been a helpful 'celluloid' teacher to me, we've had many chats about this project and celluloid-things

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re keeping well! Just wanted to reach out to filmmakers to let you know that my little production company is now accepting orders for Cinema 4K/2K DCPs and Blu-Ray Disc / DVDs.

With the prospect of cinemas re-opening on the horizon across the UK, and in other areas and after a number of requests and emails asking about film content authoring services for film festivals and cinema screenings; I’ve decided it’s the right time to open this up widely to everyone.

As an independent filmmaker myself whose has had films shown in cinemas and DCPs needed to be made, I recognise the need for filmmakers to have professional yet affordable DCPs/Discs for their film’s theatrical run and long-term archival, without the hassle/expense of going through a facility.

This end of the post production pipeline is very rarely made accessible to filmmakers and small production houses - without a huge consultation + DCP production fee attached, so I’ve got a system now for doing them, as well as making discs, at competitively priced & unmatched rates. Postage back to you is also included in the cost.

If you’d like to consider getting a DCP/Blu-Ray or M-Disc done or have any questions - please don’t hesitate to contact me via www.studioholder.com
