I remember the episode on The Unit where Snake Doctor gets extracted by a Skyhook. Repost: @spycraft101 In May 1961, an abandoned Soviet drift station was spotted in the Arctic by a US Navy survey plane. Drift stations were temporary scientific research facilities built on thin ice that drifted from the Arctic Ocean to the Greenland Sea. The opportunity for an unhindered look at current Soviet research was too great to be ignored. But there was no way for an aircraft to land at the site, and it was too far from land for a helicopter to make the round trip. Parachutists could land but recovering them along with anything found at the station was the challenge. The answer was the Fulton Skyhook system. Developed as an improvement on a previous system called the All-American, it allowed for a plane flying at low altitude to snatch a person from the ground, after the individual inflated a balloon attached to a 500-foot-long line. The system was tested for months and eventually declared ready for action, despite bureaucratic hesitancy at many levels. Finally in May 1962, the mission was a go. USAF Major James Smith, an experienced paratrooper and Russian linguist and his partner Leonard LeSchack, a US Navy officer and geophysicist with experience in the Antarctic were dropped near the Soviet NP-8 station from a B-17 bomber operated by Intermountain Aviation, a CIA proprietary airline. The two men spent days on the ground, collecting documents, scientific instruments, and taking photographs. When the B-17 returned it made three passes, first recovering the collected intel, then picking up each man individually. The conditions during the recovery were so bad that LeSchack was dragged more than 300 feet along the ground as the wind nearly carried away his balloon. Once safely onboard the plane, the two men warmed up with some medicinal whiskey.
