Y’Y - Amaro Freitas ()

The new album from the acclaimed composer and pianist pays homage to the forest and the rivers of Northern Brazil with both the music and the album title (Y’Y being a word written in the Sateré Mawé dialect, an ancestral indigenous code that means water or river.)

Y’Y brings together Shabaka Hutchings, Brandee Younger, Aniel Someillan, Jeff Parker and Hamid Drake, to all contribute to Freitas’ vision of invoking the unique sounds and rituals found in Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures. Further codifying his fresh, “decolonized” interpretation of Brazilian jazz, that may well shatter preconceived notions of what jazz can be.

The new song “Encantados” features , , and . On the 9 minute jazz epic, Freitas brings to life lessons he learned in the Amazon about the incandescent power of enchanted spirits who intervene on behalf of the community in times of struggle. You can listen to it now 🌳

This is “J” by Marcella Cytrynowicz. One of the two art pieces created alongside the song “IJ” from the new album ‘AUDIOBOOK’!

The music and art that make up ‘AUDIOBOOK’ were made in tandem by and Marcella Cytrynowicz. And b/c the music and visual art was created simultaneously, the sound influenced the sights and the sights influence the sound, causing all the parts of these pieces to grow inextricably together and create something new!

Don’t miss these shows! Joe Rainey’s music is kicking down the doors that have been closed to Native artists and demanding new space be made for Pow Wow singing - in the same conversation as any other modern music. It shouldn’t be relegated to the past or to the ‘World Music’ bin. It should be blaring out of car windows, in the earbuds of a kid on the basketball court, and in dimly lit concert venues, rattling the subs. So be there for it!

NEW FROM SAM GENDEL & ANTONIA CYTRYNOWICZ • Today the prolific multi-instrumentalist and his creative collaborator Antonia Cytrynowicz share a new track and single, “WITHOUT A SCARE.” The standalone track and accompanying video, by Marcella Cytrynowicz, comes on the heels of the duo’s debut collaborative release: the off-kilter experimental-jazz fusion of LIVE A LITTLE.

“WITHOUT A SCARE” was recorded with the same off-the-cuff approach as the duo’s other work: Cytrynowicz sang the melody and lyrics aca****la into Gendel’s phone one day as a voice memo, and then they transformed it into its final fleshed out product, which is accompanied by a Barbie nightmare-comedy video by Marcella Cytrynowicz
