As we near the end of our Musical Road to WOMEX, we travel with three remarkable artists performing at the 30th Worldwide Music Expo on Friday, 25th October in Manchester.
Ensemble Chakâm blends Persian, Arabic, and Baroque traditions, creating a fresh, contemporary sound while honouring centuries-old traditions. Their music features rhythmic intricacy, melodic vibrancy, and soulful improvisation.
Founded in 2014 by Sogol Mirzaei, the trio combines the Iranian tar, Christine Zayed’s Palestinian qanun, and Marie-Suzanne de Loye’s French viola da gamba. They champion artistic freedom, especially for women.

Nearly two years since the last episode, we are thrilled to present a brand-new 11-track mix showcasing some of the most exciting releases of 2024.
We kick off on the Caribbean and Pacific Coast of Colombia with TribalMixtura’s rhythmic cover of Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue,” inviting you to connect with your inner fire. Next, De Mar Y Rio’s “Bailen y Gocen” preserves and enhances Pacific Colombian musical heritage.
From La Reunion, Bonbon Vodou blends Maloya rhythms, French, and Creole influences in “Cérémonie du Piment Piment.” Bocafloja from the United States via Mexico brings refined and soulful hip-hop with “Sol.”
In Italy, Addict Ameba’s album Caosmosi mixes funk, jazz, desert-blues, afrobeat, and ethio-jazz with “Look at Us,” featuring Joshua Idehen. Rhabdomantic Orchestra and Gianluca Petrella offer “La Grandiosa,” a fusion of Latin beats with cinematic and jazzy sounds.
Buzz’ Ayaz from Cyprus presents “Zali,” merging psychedelic rock with Eastern Mediterranean folk. Bab L’ Bluz from Morocco delivers psychedelic Gnawa blues with “IWAIWA FUNK.” Tarwa N-Tiniri’s “Illa Lkhir” highlights Amazigh heritage.
Retimbrar featuring Suspiro from Portugal reimagines traditional Portuguese folk. Finally, Savan from Colombia ends the journey with an organic downtempo track inspired by the sounds of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Listen to, enjoy, download, share, and spread the musical journey’s vibes far and wide!

Tarwa N-Tiniri @ Visa for Music 2023
"There was a moment during the rendition of the yet-to-be-released track 'Lɛfu', when it felt like being whisked away to the town of Merzouga, at the doorstep of the Sahara Desert, where Tarwa N-Tiniri call home."
In late November, we had the pleasure of meeting the Sons of the Desert, Tarwa N-Tiniri at Visa For Music in Rabat.
Their showcase and impromptu jams were pure joy. We also had the privilege of catching up with percussionist, guitarist, and singer Mustapha Ait Ba for an interview - https://rhythmpassport.com/interview-tarwa-n-tiniri-the-musical-embrace-of-the-desert/

“Traditional music makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger. It’s not just a song for the sake of a song. We are making this song because we are connecting to the ocean, or the clouds, or the birds. So, traditional music really has that ceremonial touch to it.”
On a chilly and rainy evening in Berlin, our very own Eero Holi immersed himself in the narrative of María Mónica Gutiérrez, aka Montañera, as she unfolded her story, introduced her new album “A Flor de Piel,” and initiated him into a musical realm he had never before encountered.
