Social media can sometimes feel antisocial.

Faceless content is currently at an all-time high, making it intimidating to put our faces in the spotlight.

However, at the core of all social media is the idea of connecting with other humans, feeling a sense of relation, and forming new connections.

The simplest step you can take to increase the chances of your content connecting with people is to humanize it!

This can be as easy as uploading a real photo, showing your face, speaking directly to your viewers, and responding to comments as a human—avoiding robotic, automated, and generic responses.

Have a great day!

When someone refers to watch retention, (audience retention), they're talking about two things:

The Average View Duration & The Average Percentage Viewed.

The reason they're talked about together is because you need one to measure the other.

The average view duration is the quantity of time users on average watch a video, whereas the average percentage viewed is the average amount of a video consumed by users.

Before we can understand how they determine each others effectiveness, we need to understand why watch retention matters in the first place.

This matters because YouTube, (and all social platforms), want to collect as much of peoples attention as possible.

The longer a user stays hooked on YouTubes platform, the more opportunities there are to present them with ads that will ultimately deposit $$$ into their bank account.

To simplify that further:

(Watch Retention) = (Attention) = (Ads) = (Money) for YouTube.

So, (Watch Retention) = (Money) for YouTube.

(Remember, attention is the new currency.)

Therefore, if YOUR video is pulling great amounts of watch retention, YouTube is inclined to recommend YOUR video to MORE PEOPLE because it will make them more money... And YOU more money, too!

So now that we know why watch retention matters, how do we use the Average View Duration to help measure the Average Percentage Viewed and vice versa?

How do we use the Average View Duration to help measure the Average Percentage Viewed and vice versa?

You might think that 3 minutes of average view duration is always greater than 2 minutes, but you'd be wrong.

You might also think that 60% of average percentage viewed is always greater than 50%, and you'd still be wrong.

The outlying variable here is that the greatest goal is for viewers to keep watching after your video is over.

SO, we want to maximize watch time AND percentage to give better probability for binge watching.

With that said, it's debatable that the average percentage viewed is more important because if you secure a 100%+ average percentage viewed, then you'd be giving everyone the best watching experience and giving everyone the highest odds of clicking on another video to increase their session time.

BUT you'd still be wrong, because if someone else also has a video with 100%+ average percentage viewed, then YouTube is going to prioritize the video with a greater average watch duration or in other words... the longer video.

So in theory, we can now say the longest video always gains the advantage. Which, is again debatable, but you're still wrong.

With this new idea of creating the longest videos possible, you'll still need people to actually watch the video for it to matter, and if they click off after 1 minute or less, giving the video a single digit average percentage viewed... well... Let's just say the only person recommending your video to others is your mother.

Watch retention is an analytic *tool* to measure the *quality* of your content and not a tool to cheat views.

You shouldn't force a video to be longer for more watch time, and you shouldn't force a video to be shorter to increase the average percentage viewed.

Just build your videos for quality and entertainment to be enjoyed until the end with the highest chance that users will become fans and choose to binge watch your content, thus creating a greater watch time using your *catalog of content.*

And I'm sorry to break it to you, but, if your watch retention is tanking... your videos aren't *interesting* people.

To fix that, boost your watch retention and hop on to Youtube's algorithm, follow us *For Free* OR send us a DM and set up a content strategy consultation today.

Quality wins BUT it's not that simple.
Other than making sure you get started in the first place and don't waste a decade on your first project...

YouTube will award you for uploading every 28 days or less.

How? With the all mighty and mysterious algorithm.

See, YouTube and other social platforms are constantly learning about your content and figuring out who *wants* to see it.

Why? Well, they want to keep people engaged on their platform for as long as possible.

Focusing on YouTube, more watch time = more time for ads = more $$.

So on YouTube particularly, every account in the past 28 days who has found interest in your content, and is likely to *want more*, will be recommended your new video for increased probability in clicks, and watch session time.

Which will immensely help in getting your video recommended to the masses and driving traffic to your channel.

The internet is a great tool BUT…

Don’t forget to disconnect to reconnect.

Give your eyes a break from the blue light, and take in the sun light.

Spend time with your friends and family this holiday season.

The content creation game is never ending, and in the long run, taking a break is just as important as putting in that work.

Have a great weekend!

The video itself is NOT most important and here’s why…

Let’s say you’re the most talented video creator to walk planet earth.

You’ve now prepared, filmed, edited and uploaded a video MASTERPIECE to YouTube.

Under the assumption that you’ve literally created a perfect video that 100% of people *would* watch to the very end- this video *should* break the internet.

However, for the world to witness this Monalisa of a YouTube video, they need to both FIND the video and CLICK on it.

If your thumbnail was a solid black rectangle and the title was “gnsmdkul”, the entire world would miss out on the greatest spectacle to be uploaded to the World Wide Web.

Therefore, your thumbnail is more important than your actual video. BUT…

Just to be clear, that doesn’t mean you should not care about your videos quality.

What it really means is, give some extra attention to the thumbnail just as you would to the video.

After you come up with a great idea and decide to execute, make the next step in your workflow to make this video clickable.

The last thing you want to do is spend days, weeks, or even months on creating a banger video just for it to get no clicks.

Why should you care?
Because attention is the new currency. 💰

On average people in 2022, ages 16-64, spent 151 minutes consuming content on social media platforms.

But what does that mean to the rest of us?
