There have been a number of great jazz programs on TV over the years, a few can now be found on DVD and many more are on YouTube if you know what to look for. Garry Berman gave us a rundown of Jazz TV shows through the years to help your search.

Jazz fans in the 21st century enjoy jazz primarily by listening to recordings on LPs, CDs, music streaming services, and by attending live performances in

I was deeply saddened to hear today of the passing of physician, musician, and humanitarian Eli Newberger today. The first major story I wrote for The American Rag nine years ago was about Eli and his Hot Six. I was honored to be his friend and will miss him terribly. Much love and condolences to Carolyn Newberger, to whom Eli was married for 62 years.

Jazz tuba virtuoso Dr. Eli Newberger experienced his jazz epiphany in the sixth grade when the excellent Davis Dixie Band (of A. B. Davis High School in Mount

The print edition did not come out to our standard, but the problem with some color photographs has been corrected and the November issue should be beautiful! This was the second full color issue and we will chalk it up to growing pains.

We feel worst about 17 year old Nathan on our cover, his hard copies won't be what they could have been. Please give his article a share. If he lives as long as his interviewer, 98 year old Lew Shaw, he will carry the jazz clarinet tradition well into the 22nd century!

Our Jazz Birthday post for Irving Berlin has his birthdate as May 23, 1888. A reader just wrote to say that Berlin was born May 11, 1888, and that we should correct the error. Who was right?

Irving Berlin was born Israel Beilin on May 23, 1888, in Tyumen, Siberia. Israel’s family emigrated to the United States when he was five years old. At Ellis

Our July issue is online. Arthur Vint is on the cover, A deep dive into Porter Brown, complete with lost home recordings, is worth a gander. Three festivals are reviewed and more previewed. Ramona Baker takes us down to Five Points and the Bowery, profiles in jazz takes us to Europe with African Americans who spent their careers there, we interview the author of a new book on Early Jazz, and say goodbye to Palm Court.

"Why do I need a print subscription to The Syncopated Times?"

As shown in the article below (published in the June 28, 2024 issue of The Week), much of the information scraped by AI bots from our website and others goes through a hallucinatory blender and comes out as an Information Smoothie. Facts that pop up online are changed or made up entirely. Information in The Syncopated Times is edited and fact-checked by our long-time editor Andy Senior before going to press or being posted on our website. Our writing is entirely created by humans you can write to and harangue if they get something wrong. In a world of faceless, black-box, unaccountable journalism, we're practically Colonial Williamsburg. When you deal with us, you're dealing with human beings--so please be kind.
