There is a great presence and population of Philadelphia youth in North Philly, and despite that great percentage of the population there is a great lack in investment of advertising third spaces for after school activities and programs to occupy these young impressionable minds. Advocates in Philadelphia rallied at City Hall to protest the violence and abuse within the city's prisons, highlighting the 46 deaths recorded since 2020. The Abolitionist Law Center organized the event and proposed the creation of a Prison Oversight Committee, among other reforms, to address concerns such as staffing shortages, pretrial detention, bail disparities, limited parole access, solitary confinement, and poor prison conditions.

There's a crisis of confidence in Philly prisons, and the Prison Oversight Committee is just one of the many reforms that watchers want. This article covers reformers' ideas to better our correctional system. [continue reading...]
