This past year, the North Fork Environmental Council signed on to a comprehensive project organized by Connecticut non-profit Save The Sound to document changes in water quality throughout the year in Mattituck Creek and Goldsmith Inlet, giving environmentalists insight into the health of the only two East End embayments that drain into the Long Island Sound:

The Peconic Bay Scallop, whose adult population has been wiped out in East End waters each of the past two seasons, is getting a boost this year from Southampton Town, which in mid-July began to establish a bay scallop nursery at its Tiana Bayside community aquaculture facility on Dune Road in Hampton Bays:

Like many water bodies across Long Island, the ecosystem of Shinnecock Bay was in serious decline a decade ago, but unlike those other water bodies, that decline has begun to reverse. Scientists at Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences believe they know why things are improving: Because of the restoration work they’ve spent the past ten years doing:
