A tribute to Chinatown and a celebration of cultures
For over a decade, LionDanceME has trained and performed the traditional art of lion dance in San Francisco. Its own studio is located in the heart of Chinatown. Students of all ages participate in local competitions and community events, including the annual Lunar New Year Festival in San Francisco. Sessions can last up to six hours at a time, with many routines practiced to perfection to ensure safety during live performances
In celebration of AAPI month and San Francisco’s Chinatown, Nike released a pack featuring a Dunk High and Air Force 1 Low, honoring the people, values and culture that helped build one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia. Together these sneakers as seen on the feet of the LionDanceME crew and The Golden Generation zine presented by MAEKAN and The Darkside Initiative are a vehicle for stories and an exploration into the past and future.
旧金山/舊金山 (Gau Gam Saan, or “Old Gold Mountain”) is what many refer to as San Francisco. It remains inseparably connected to the city’s Chinatown, the first and oldest in the United States, where generations of Americans would call home. Throughout history, the community has faced everything from natural disasters, crime and instability to anti-Asian discrimination and violence – the bonds between its residents growing stronger as it worked together to overcome and endure.
The Golden Generation is just beginning. Head over to mae.kn/gg to see additional stories of those, among many others, changing the landscape for Asian Americans.

The first issue of 502 Bad Gateway (@the502badgateway) released in January this year. It contains features on Tender, Olubiyi Thomas, the Massimo Osti Archive, and Sampaix Studio, plus graphic elements that are decidedly in the opposite direction of the average glossy fashion mags.
In founder Seth Footring’s (@sethrfootring) own words, it's a “men’s magazine that focuses on men’s style and has a strong graphic element and has a strong wordy article element to it.” Inspired by an internal server error message that lets a user know when something they want to access online is not available, 502 Bad Gateway is Footring’s nod to internet culture in a tangible, print format.
Charis Poon (@charispoon) sat down with Footring for an in-depth interview. See the full story at MAEKAN.com. Photography by @sebastianpetrovski

In our first episode, we speak with Rebecca Kelley of Woolmark, a company focused on telling the story of merino wool globally. Rebecca’s efforts promote merino wool’s unique properties to designers as well as how craftsmen globally are working with the fabric, a special bit of Mother Nature deserving of our respect and interest.
