Wild Mushroom Hunting in Northern New Mexico

Longtime Taos residents Vreni Kronenberg and Pavel Lukes have been hunting for mushrooms in the mountains of Northern New Mexico for decades, collecting pounds of chanterelles, king boletes and white caps during monsoon season — from mid-June through September. Here is the speech that Taos News magazine editor Ellen Miller-Goins gave on behalf of Wanda Lucero for Citizen of the Year:

"Community” has two meanings: It’s a place and its people and our fellowship and shared goals. One definition calls it “a group of people we lean on when times are tough.”

We lean on you, our Unsung Heroes. I know none of you expect recognition, and some of you would have rather stayed “unsung.” This is also true of our Citizen of the Year. Wanda Lucero may be bold in marketing her business, but she does everything else quietly.

Unless you live in a cave, you know she owns Wanda Lucero State Farm Insurance Agency. It was an honor to get to know Wanda and tell her story. She has helped with so many worthwhile causes that I had to make a few painful editing decisions!

We can’t be here all night — so I’ll summarize. Wanda grew up surrounded by a large, loving family. She learned the value of giving, especially from her parents. Cancer has claimed more than one family member, and Wanda herself had a cancer scare, so she helped start “Walk for the Health of It,” a fundraiser for Taos Cancer Support Service.

Many organizations she’s actively supported throughout the year help the vulnerable and our young people: Girl Scouts of New Mexico, Taos Community Foundation, Casa de Corazón, the CAV, Rocky Mountain Youth Corp, Taos Municipal Schools Sports Teams.…

When she learned some of our athletes couldn’t afford to eat on the road, it broke her heart. So, she bought their meals.

Honestly, I could go on far too long, but let me just say this: This woman is beautiful inside and out. I am so proud to introduce our 2024 Citizen of the Year, Wanda Lucero.

Everywhere you look around Northern New Mexico, Wanda Lucero is there: She’s fearless when it comes to marketing her insurance business, no doubt, but Lucero is everywhere behind the scenes
