Something cool is happening on the beach along Lake Michigan in Ludington this evening. Grand Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute will demonstrate its BeBot to clean up the beach.

Annis Water Resources Institute research Professor Alan Steinman says some 20 million pounds of plastic could be entering the Great Lakes every year, the source of drinking water for 40 million Americans and Canadians. He says fish are eating micro-plastics, which can kill them. He says the real solution is to reduce the use of single use plastics.

If you're looking for a pet for your home, the Bissell Pet Foundation is funding Empty The Shelters over the next two weeks. 45 shelters in Michigan are involved. Bissell Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell says the need is great.
Bissell says shelters are more full because of vet and staff shortages and not as many people adopting lately. She says you can adopt a pet through Empty the Shelters for $25 dollars or less through May 15th. More information at Bissellpetfoundation.org

Meantime, the Grand Hotel will open on Mackinac Island on Sunday. Ken Hayward , managing director of the hotel, says they can't wait to welcome guests. He says they are doing extra cleaning and social distancing at the hotel because of COVID-19.
