Here’s the exact strategy I use to socialize my animals
In the beginning:
1. Understand the animal’s body language both by observing it and researching their natural behaviors
2. Get the animal used to your presence first by spending time around the enclosure and putting a worn piece of clothing in the enclosure for them to get used to your scent. Then, at the same time every day or every other day, calmly reach your hand into the enclosure without touching the animal or looking at it, and leave it there for as long as you can. Do this until the animal stops running away and starts coming to explore your hand. Then you can start doing the same thing but touching the animal, gently petting its chest, face, etc, and adding eye contact. Once the animal is comfortable with being touched and you’ve taught it that you’re not a threat, you can begin handling
Tips for Handling Sessions:
1. Again, keep the handling sessions in the beginning at the same time for the same, gradually-increasing period of time
2. Never reach for your animal from above, scoop them instead. It can also help to keep the animal at chest level or above and to safely raise it above your head if it starts freaking out.
3. Keep the environment calm and quiet for both the animal’s comfort and so you can focus on the animal’s body language
4. Stay calm yourself to keep the animal calm
5. Use supportive movements and gentle touches to convince the animal that you are not a threat and nothing bad is going to happen to it
6. Associate handling with positivity: they get to stretch out, explore, climb, etc. when they come out
7. Leave the handling session on a good note: with everyone calm, confident, and not running away from you into their enclosure
